  1. All the parts had a VW Audi stamp on them. I did get a bit of discount on them as I know the bloke in parts so it might work out similar sort of price as the Gruven bits?
  2. Gruven does look the dogs. As for the genuine bits, I ordered through my local Vw dealer, MON Motors Chippenham. It came to 115 all in for complete housing, o rings and bolts. Not leaking yet but only been running it up to temp in my workshop.
  3. Hi mate. I have recently rebuilt my VR6 and had this exact problem with an aftermarket stat housing made by Topran. I must of stripped and refitted 3 times dry then used sealant but still leaked. So i bit the bullet and bought a whole new set from VW, all parts of the housing, new o rings and new bolts and fingers crossed all seems ok! Looking at the aftermarket parts it looks like the union from the crack pipe onto the main housing didn't fit flat, like it was warped or something. Get what you pay for I suppose!
  4. Good point, thanks for that. If its that simple then that'll be good. The green glow that lights up the dials is a bit dim also so I might upgrade that whilst Im at it.
  5. Has anyone had their oil pressure light bulb/ led blow before? Mine doesn't come on when turning the ignition on. I ve changed both switches but still no joy. Is there a cluster test that can be done?
  6. Thanks for that mate. Pretty sure I've got an old 24 kicking around I could cut down. I haven't put the slam panel back on yet so hopefully be a simple job.
  7. Just out of interest, anyone had there oil light not work at all? New switches hopefully here tomorrow so should cure it. Just wondered what the chances are that the bulb has blown behind the dash?
  8. Ace bit of info that is mate, spot on! Cheers!:thumbleft:
  9. Spot on. The yellow wire is on the left which I believe is HP. I noticed yesterday that the oil light doesn't come on at all, not even when you put on the ignition!
  10. Thanks for that. Hopefully it's obvious which one goes where! I'm hoping there's a pressure stamped on them!
  11. So, after running the vr for the first time since a rebuild its time to iron out a few niggles! Coolant leak sorted, fuel leak sorted now the oil pressure switch on topic the filter housing is leaking!! Ordered two new ones, my question is, why is there two and does it matter which way round they go!!? I've got a yellow lead and a black one/dark blue? Any advice gratefully received!!
  12. All good to hear, thanks guys! I'll persevere! Hopefully sorted the coolant leak last night, those plastic thermostat housings are a bugger! Just the o rings to do on the injectors then MOT time!! 😬
  13. Thanks everyone for replying, its made me feel a bit happier! Ive put so much time an money into this and desperately want it right! Cant wait to take her for a spin! Before we started her up we disconnected the coil pack and let her crank for 5 or 6 seconds and we did that twice. Im trying to upload some vids but can't work it out at the mo!!
  14. So after 16 months of doing bits here and there whenever work and family commitments allowed, my engine is finally rebuilt and installed!! One thing thats bugging me...when we first started her, (started first crank by the way) she was very top end knocky! we had it running for approx 3 mins and turned her off due to noticing a coolant leak. After tending to that we fired her back up and it was quieter and towards the end of that run was noticeably quieter still but still a bit tappy! Thats where we finished for the night as it was heading for midnight and i don't expect the neighbours would of been best pleased! I can try and add a vid of the noise if I can work out how too!!
  15. Hi, been a while since I've posted and apologies if this has been raised before. I'm rebuilding (slowly) my abv vr6 and the time has come to fit the Pistons. I have a tool but now realise that it is no good due to the angle of the bank! ( obvious now when you think about it!) anyone have any tips or tricks? I've thought about modifying my existing tool, don't really want to buy another as hopefully won't need it again! 😬 any advice gratefully received! Tom.
  16. Im going to do my best to drag the family up for a day out. Wont be in the corrado unfortunately as still rebuilding the engine! Hopefully be able to find some good bits from the sellers, need quite a bit! Hope to meet a few of you on the day!

    2.9 vr6 rebuild

Cheers Jim. Just managed to find a 2.9 abv block on eBay actually. Turned up Friday so when funds are freed up I'll start rebuilding it!! Can't wait!
  18. Just a quick update. After removing the lower timing chain it became clear there was far too much play in the oil pump intermediate shaft!! After removing the shaft it turns out that the bearing around it had fallen away and worn away the block meaning a new block is required!! I can see plenty of 2.8 aaa variants but would prefer a 2.9 abv as that's what's in it. Can anyone confirm any differences please.?

  20. Ha, yea certainly is!! It was my uncles. Are you on the corner in the village? Mushy pea mk1 golf?
  21. I think I'll give the saxo crew a miss ta!! Ha! Good to find someone local. Definately up for helping out where I can mate, I'm sure I'll be on hear plenty of times looking for advice too! What sort of things you got wrong with yours then?
  22. Thanks, I know! Credit to the German engineering! Every nut and bolt has come off no trouble as well apart from the flywheel bolts!
  23. Hi everyone! Good to be part of a forum at last!! I've had my vr6 for over a year now and have just started to strip the engine! Timing chains just given up at 256k!! Would like to be part of a club, maybe with a few meets etc? Anyone recommend any? I'm based in wiltshire. Cheers, Tom.

    2.9 vr6 rebuild

Thanks for the replies guys! I must admit, I'm more of the opinion it's better to keep my engine. It has got full history up to 200k and ran like a dream until the chain tensioners failed. I think maybe the oil pump wasn't working to full capacity which in turn caused the chain to go slack. It has put the timing out a tad and has unfortunately bent 3 valves as long as I can rectify the play in the pump pulley bearing I'm confident it will be ok!
  25. Hi everyone. Would very much appreciate some advice on my project! I was given the car by my uncle as it needed new timing chains. The car has 250,000 miles so thought I'd do a rebuild. Engine is fully stripped now, Pistons out, valves out etc. The problem I have is the pulley at the top of the lower chain has quite a bit of play in it!? I thought this was the oil pump but pics I have googled just show the pick up in the sump? Can anyone confirm what this is and if I can replace it? Any other words of advice would be very much appreciated!!
