  1. 1st drive today! Needed to get a shakedown run in prior to the MOT on Wednesday so left home at lunchtime today for a quick run around the long ring between home and work and back. Initial problem with the brakes juddering like hell but a few heavy presses to clear 3 years of corrosion from the faces soon had that sorted. All going ok although my coolant temps are sitting higher than I would like at around 95 degrees, oil cooler is working a treat though with 80 degrees during the run. All in all it worked well, didn't really give it any beans at all but did stab the throttle a little to get the larger butterfly to open at 2500rpm in 5th, it took off fairly well :). No real issues from the run-in period, 2nd and 4th gears are awkward to select but that just needs a tweak at the gearbox cable end, throttle cable is sticking a little at the idle end, I need to have a look at the pedal end as it feels like it's happening there. The new 5th gear is working well and aside from the 2nd and 4th issue the box is selecting and working very nicely. Post wiring loom re-wrap the engine is not moving into the cold start enrichment phase so the initial idle is rough, I suspect it's just the earth point so I need to clean that up, BTS is working as disconnecting it results in a big RPM drop as expected. The N/S/F bonnet release is not working properly, despite lubing it up and putting more tension on the cable it's still being annoying. So all in all pretty chuffed, it's driving nicely and the couple of minor snags are just that, minor. Next step is an MOT certificate and then I can concentrate on getting the finer details sorted like wiring in the additional instruments and getting some clips for various hoses.
  2. Nice one Jimbo, a good decision and I am sure you will be happy with the car. Looking forward to seeing it later this year (which means you need to come to BVF!)
  3. All I can say is that given the VW electrical diagrams for a European Corrado every model year up to the last one built shows a relay at position 5 on the relay board for the coolant warning indicator lamp. If folks don't have one and your coolant shortage light is flashing for a few seconds at startup then I don't know how it's working. The other option is the wiring diagram is incorrect and earlier models (no idea when though) need the relay and later ones don't. Need to survey a few cars this year and see if I can work out what it going on.
  4. id expect so, ive had snow and im only as far north as dundee It was yesterday and the day before, driving horrible stuff but it wasn't settling as I am too close to the coast here. Head about 10 miles inland though and most people had to dig their way out of a drift! Managed to get all the dirty bits sorted out today when I got in from work so it's just get the fuse box and lower drivers dash trims back in tomorrow, I still need to wrap the last of the engine loom and the MOT is booked for 08:30 on Wednesday. If it stays dry I am taking it out for a quick shakedown on Saturday, can't wait
  5. you sound like that boy off that fast show!!! Thats amazing! lol i was paying more for that on a mankey old G60 with no mods and no track insurance at 3rd party only! Fair play! :thumb right: Yeah well chuffed with it, thing is though 2nd car, over 20 years old, 5k limited mileage, garaged, probably one of the cheapest postcodes in the UK to insure in, old git, married, home owner, non smoker etc, still about £50 cheaper than anyone else and the track insurance, agreed value and like for like on mods is better than the other polices too. So bloody close now, if it wasn't for the fact I have to go out and work on the car wearing 7 layers of clothing it would be a lot easier!
  6. Nice, spent a little while playing, hopefully it will drive as good as it looks when some journos get to test it.
  7. Almost finished, ran out of time again today as had to collect Mrs Yandards from the airport. Got the insurance sorted though through HIC and very pleased with it, all mods declared 250bhp limit, agreed value, Uk track day cover, like for like mod replacement all for under £400, which is nice. Will get it finished off on Friday, managed to refit the bumper but with one of the attachments has not engaged on the passenger side, didn't notice until after I had rebuilt all the other bits when I went to refit the passenger wing liner. Booking at MOT for early next week, so fingers crossed, need to take it out round the block first just to check it's all working ok as it's been 3 years since I last drove it!
  8. G60 is still available from VAG, it's on the parts catalogue just before the engine mounting page. 16v is no good to you, it's the wrong item completely.
  9. A split fuel line is nothing in the grand scheme of things, it's not like you have not been through the grand scheme either! Seems a shame to break a car just because of a fuel leak. As for your hapiness with the task and the car, I am sure it will come back to you, you just need to drive it first, I do know what it's like the project in my garage has been eating money since it started and that get's depressing after a while - especially when you keep running into problems and there is no end in sight.
  10. Right then despite the driving snow and hail today I am down to a very finite list of things to do: Fit 2 x bolts to the gearbox mount arm Refit brake cooling ducts & oil cooler duct Fit N/S/F & O/S/F wheel arch liners Refit PAS pump rear support bracket Fit headlights Fit 4 x front bumper bolts Refit fusebox Refit lower dash tray on drivers side Fit rad support panel to front splitter metal 'U' channel Finish the last little bit of wiring loom wraping and er, that's it. Still some other bits I want to tweak (injector wiring needs to be in some brushed stainless tube, additional instruments need some wiring run etc) but there is no reason it can't go for an MOT as soon as I can get one booked and the weather stops being crappy.
  11. and this is a pea roast so locking it up. Had that very image as my desktop for a few months now, it's just a 'what if' exercise by an Ausi design firm.
  12. It's not like it's a pattern wing, a genuine VAG one should fit with no effort at all. I've never taken a wing off.. are they just bolted on ?? do they have any locating pins ?? I know you have to heat the old one up to remove due to all the sticky sealant behind. but i uess if its not a pattern it should be okay in the right hands. Yeah few bolts and some sealant. The outer wing is actually refered to as a mud wing, they are not structual in any way so it's easyish to get them on and off.

  14. Humn if late wings are that price that only means one thing, buy them now as they clearing out what's left before they go obsolete! I still think it would be worthwhile getting a new wing fitted, especially as you have some rust around the indicator hole and that dent will never be the same again; at £110 for a new one it is well worth doing.
  15. Go for the new wing, not likely that crease will come out cleanly. Inner will have taken a knock too but that should pop back out ok as it looks like most of the dent is in the void between the inner and outer wing. New wings for later models are still available new from VAG although it is going to be around £400 inc VAT, you can shove at least another £500 labour onto that bill as it's going be most of the front end getting painted to ensure a good colour match. You might have a bit of a fight with the insurers as there is going to be little change from £1000 and if they value the car low then most companies will only repair for up to 75% of the cars value.
  16. Damn forgot about that, was going to have it on for this race as I had only read the new Sniff the day before.
  17. Thanks for the generous comments folks. More progress today although I didn't get started until well after lunch :( Few odd and sods jobs done and dusted but spent most of the time tidying what's left to tidy of the main wiring loom, it ended up taking a lot longer than I would have liked (had to keep re-routing various bits of wire) but it looks fairly good now so I just need to wrap it all up. Still need to get the bumper back on but am aiming to do that post wiring wrapping in the morning, still need to fabricate a couple of support brackets for the oil cooler, catch tank and ISV along with finding somewhere to mount the horn. If it all goes as planned tomorrow then I will be booking an MOT for later in the week....
  18. VAG have a specific tool a 3111, if you run the beam down to them they should be able to push the bushes in for you. Note that the new bushes need to be orientated in the correct direction (see picture) and the book states that 8mm of metal must protrude from the other side. When fitted the rear beam to the car the procedure is to remove both rear brackets and fit them to the beam, reposition the beam and refit both brackets loosely, then align the right hand bracket bolts to the centre of the elongated holes and tighten. For the left hand bracket you need to insert a pry-bar on the outer edge of the bracket between the end of the bush and the inner edge of the bracket, then lever the assembly inwards so that there is only a slight gap between the inner face of the bush and the inner face of the bracket (2mm IIRC) tighten the bolts for the left hand bracket in this position. That's what you should be doing, the rear beam bushes need to be laterally loaded so they work properly...
  19. I did enjoy it but I suspect as soon as we get a dry race with no safety cars and none of the faster drivers getting out of position early on will result in a very dull race. Some really great drives, Button for making a good choice and taking some good overtakes on when it mattered, Kubica for bringing home 2nd in a car that is mid-field at best, Alonso for managing to work his way back through the field and Hamilton for showing some great pace. I do suspect Alonso is going to be the guy to win it this year, he is being very composed and seems comfortable at Ferrari, Vetel is bloody quick but they still seem to have some big reliability issues in that team. As for Red Bulls ride height, current suspicions seem to be that they are abusing the regulation that allows you to re-gas the dampers post qualifying. Ferrari are also reported to have a ride height device but it's been quoted as being 'mechanical and very obvious'. If this is the case then it's clear the 2 fastest teams on the grid are getting some serious time out of such set-ups. This seems to be backed up by in race pace, neither Ferrari or Red Bull can carry the same sort of performance difference they get in qualifying into a race.
  20. If you have a 55 litre or 12 gallon tank the straps are still available new, if you have the later 70 litre 15 gallon tank then you can only get 1 out of the 3 straps.
  21. Sticky coolant switch? I still don't really know how the set-up works, the relay may only serve the purpose of providing the start-up flash.. I suspect your coolant flush is the reason yours was on the fritz, the in reservoir units are not the best. Interesting that so many cars seem to be missing this relay but it is shown fitted to the later models in the wiring diagram.
  22. I haven't, just that it is worth watching.. :)
  23. Well, it was worth getting out of bed for....
