Door card removal

I've recently got the door handle repair kit and need to remove the door card to take off the handle.I've taken the three screws out,and tried to take off the card but don't want to snap/brake anything.The only problem seems to be the button on the sill,a silly question,but should this button be up or down? Either way,it's making the card hard to get off.What's the best way of doing this?

Taken the grab handle off? Taken the door release handle surround off? Taken the screw out from behind the speaker grille? Unscrewed the door pin?

Surely to fit the repair kit, the handle has to come off the car? Bit restrictive otherwise....

If the handle has been removed before then the cable clip at the outer edge of the door may not have been re-fitted - noticed this on my car, I think it's very awkward to re-fit. This will allow you to pull the handle out enough to fit the kit.
