Clio 182 - hit me with your thoughts

Recommended Posts

If I had £10K ish, I'd prob get a Scoob or an Integra (although like you, I'd prefer the DC5). Loads of other good options though. You could get a mint, late low mileage S14A 200SX for around £6K. Rear wheel madness with huge tuning potential. Look really mean too.

Or you could go VAG. Golf PD150 GTDI, Octavia vRS, Leon Cupra, Ibiza Cupra etc etc. Think all the above would be much better than the Clio day to day. More refined, nicer place to be on longer journeys, more reliable (in theory!), much better build etc etc.

Certainly worth giving one a test drive. And then just imagine it with another 40BHP and 50lb/ft of torque as the remap will free that much more out of it.

Golf PD150 sounds good to me. I reckon it may be a bit of a shock going from the interior & build of an S3 to that of a lightened Clio... and i'm not anti everything but VAG, just think you should have better! Type R... heard bad things, pretty quick though. :)

i was impressed with it.

Got talking to the guy that owned it as he used to pop into the pub where i worked, said it was great fun. couldn't fault it and hes drivem all the renaults. ( does work for them)

10k, my boyhood dream still is to own a Escort Cosworth and ya can get um for that kinda figure

If you have to get a clio get the V6 my friend had one and it was just so fast it kicked arse. It had a crap turning circle and you could not get too many things in the back but who cares this was faster than most things out there and a few people where running them with superchargers! I have had a go in a Clio cup and it was ok but when there is more that ywo people in it faided away a little, colour wise go with black for the 182 and red with the V6

tried a celica gt four? having used a mates 182 to drive from leeds to slough a couple of times i must admit it is a great little car only thing i could fault was the interior was not to my liking. As you mentioned a lot of people find it difficult to look beyond the badge.

i dont really want an old car at the moment. something under 3 or 4 years old im looking for now. I have done the whole buying an old car and making it mint twice now and it costs a fortune... fancie something easier for a while.... but still fun.

may return to 10 yr old cars in the future... but not yet

No mention of Seat Leon Cupra. Either in PD150 diesel form (which I have with a tuning box fitted) and it can make the clutch slip - torque is fantastic and makes my VR (RR @ 209 bhp feel pedestrian in the mid range) and still does 50mpg+. Then we have a choice of 180bhp cupra or 180 and 225 cupra 'R' which you'd feel at home in as it has the same dash as the S3 and is easily tuneable and IMO is a good looking car. I rest my case.

mmmm

now as far as i dont agree with french cars the clio 172s and 182s are great

build quality aint the best but anycar will go forever if looked after - i swear by that

look at all the old volvos on the road nowadays - 20 years old and still going - renault engines in them mind, like mine, 2.3 litre, 170,000 miles on the original clutch, headgasket etc

but look at most renaults - fall to peices after a couple of years, but look after it and it will serve you well

i still prefer the megane 225 though, not sure how much they go for though!

Jedi, trust me mate, go for a ride in a 172 Cup that is in good condition and I guarantee you will love it. Of course the build ain't up to S3 levels, but you are looking for fun, which is what you originally said, and the 172/182 has so much of it. Easily more fun then even my old 205 1.9 and VR.

But if you really have that much money to spend, I personally would be looking at an E36 EVO or late S14A, or just for something more refined, late fully loaded Honda legends are going cheap these days.

i think you will be very dissapointed after the last two cars you have owned! my friend has a 182 clio and its horrible! goes round corners fairly well but not very quick. the build quality is amazing though as bits fall off even when you look at them thats some feat! seriously though get a leon or ibiza if you want a nice little gay car!

I worked for a Renault dealer up until 2 weeks ago in the parts department and I was in charge of making sure parts were ordered in advance for warranty.

The common things to go on a 172/182 are:

Gearboxes

Driveshafts (which on Phase 2 (triangle headlights, 5 spoke alloys) & 3 (182) are not service exchangeable)

ECUs

Exhausts

Rain sensors

Remote keys

TDC sensors

EGR valves

I almost bought one. I too was hooked on the drive. However I started checking out the warranty history on the ones on Auto Trader, and found about 80% of them were imports, so had less warranty, and they'd all had a hell of a lot of warranty work.

I was about to put a deposit down on a silver 51 plater but someone else got to it before I did. Two weeks later the supplying garage called me and needed a quote for a new gearbox as it had just blown up. Another garage fitted it but lost the immobiliser code by leaving hte battry disconnected. The car turned out to be imported from the UAE, and Renault couldn't get a code for it, so new decoder boxes and remotes had to be bought. The car left our workshop a month later. The day the garage rang for the gearbox quote was the day I realised I was being stupid for even considering a Renault.

right well i just been over to newmarket for a drive in one... it was a 182 cup so it was very basic... no xenon, no digi climate, no half leather seats, no cruise control.

Drove nicely. quite bumpy but thats ok... just reminded me of the crx. didnt really get to throw it round too many corners but the ones i did it felt nice and planted.

I thought the interior was ok actually. One of the reasons i sold the corrado is because i was fed up of the rattles and crap way it all went together and i didnt think the clio was any worse.

The driving position was nice aswell.... no room in the back though.

Im not really any further forwards though after driving one. I think i need to take it on a longer drive before i will know.

I definately know that i would want a normal 182 with cup suspension though.. then i would get some of the toys back.

Also i got to thinking of all the cars i could actually get for £10k .... i will now start looking at some old m3's i think and maybe some golf tdi 150's

as for the gay car comment billinjahg60, i'll ignore that you little fucker. ;)

oh and i decided i dont like the orange after seeing it in the flesh.

Have you driven an S14A? So much car for the money- think they were around £25K new. You can get 2001 low milers for well under £6K...

Think you're right to have a look at the 150 TDi's- quality.

Won't an old M3 have similar probs to a C? They're awsome, buta any older car (unless v. low mileage) is bound to have picked up trim rattles etc over the years.

So you weren't immediately hooked then Nathan? Shame.... I thought you'd sign on the dotted line after the test run :-)

M3s in E36 flavour can be a tonne of bang for little buck, it it's the Evo....providing you find a cherished low miler. As Andy said, cheapy abused ones will make C maintenance seem absurdly cheap by comparison. Things like VANOS units (twin on the EVO), exhaust manifolds (they crack) and ignition modules are all common and all cost a fortune.

The pick of the crop is a last of the line 3.0 Single VANOS M3..... very good cars and reliable.....by E36 M3 standards at least.

Another option is the 200SX, they can look superb in dark colours with choice rims and they're excellent long distance cruisers.
