Alright people,

 

Got a few problems with the G60.

 

I have noticed a knocking noise when the engine is under load, its getting quite loud so i have now decied to drive like 90yo on weed, low and slow lol

 

I am replacing the knock sensor just in case but i do have a feeling the timing is well out.

 

Just gotta find somewhere in lincoln/shire that can do my timing asap. (any suggestions)??

MAYO ON DIPSTICK!

 

Im just about to do a oil change and while its empty im gonna remove the sump and clean it out, get rid of all the crap. but i have noticed a little mayo on the dipstick but not on the oil cap. Head Gasket time??? or winter codensation(sp)

 

The engine is a pretty heavy modified G60, last dyno'd at 225bhp, really dont wanna loose this :S

Are you loosing water? If coolant is in the oil then you will get a knocking sound from the engine... I'd change the oil as a matter of course.

 

How tight is the dipstick guide tube? pattern parts don't seal very well and you get the condensation on the dipstick like you describe.

Ive been keeping an eye on the water and its not going down. Gonna have to get my hands dirty this week.

That will explain the mayo then - I had a MK2 golf with the same issue!

 

Knocking noise - we could do with a bit more info but I'd change the oil first incase it was contaminated

right the knocking noise.

 

When the engine is under load, there is a knocking noise (kinda like ticking) As i get adventurous with the go faster pedal it gets louder as does obviously the induction. but the faster i go the rate of tick also increases.

 

im proper scared of going above 3k revs now...

Ok, that very much sounds like conrod bearings - usually go at around 100k on G60 engines

No, he said the bearings, they are about £30 plus some new conrod bolts and if you are feeling brave you can do them on the drive, just drop the sump and you are looking at the crank complete with conrods and bearings. You might as well do the crank bearings as well but you will need to be careful not to pull the pistons out of the bores or you will need a ring compression tool.

double check the crank shaft, if the bearings have gotton too hot , it may of scored and damaged the crank shaft, if this happens it will need a new engine or crankshaft! :(

lol so that mortgage is probably needed, i will give it a good inspection when i get the sump off. While its off then, what else could i replace just for the sake of it that obviously isnt crazy exspensive or stupid hard to do ?

Winter mayo is a common problem. You need to get the oil temp over 100 degrees for a good 10-15 minutes to clear that out of the oil. It's very easy to get paranoid..

For a garage nearby, you could try Lincoln VW Specialist in Norht Hykham, or MG Raw up the top of town near Tesco's.

Failing that there is always AWTracksport in Horncastle, although his service can be hit or miss (I've had both)

i went to MG Raw on the weekend and he put me strait off

 

"You bring your G60 here and i will give you it back with a massive bill" this is just after i told him it was a mk2 Golf g60

I was told to try Auto Test and Tune in lincoln to get my timing sorted

Strange, I had excellent service from MG when My TDi golf decided to chew up a tappet and smash the head to bits.

There are a few VW places in Lincoln to try, even Alan Rhodes is pretty good.

Still major problems

 

Still gettting this loud knocking noise after haing the shells checked. Also i have started to get a minor oil leak, but obviosuly i have only noticed this when the car has been still and sat on my drive.

 

i checked and cleaned the sump, head and rocker cover gaskets for any leaking oil but nothing.

 

If i had a crack in the lump, would that end it all or would you still be able to drive it?

I concur thought my top end had gone, it was 1 loose nut on no.4 exhaust manifold. :lol:
