I think it is worth serious thought, as we chat offline, but interesting to hear other peoples opinions here too. Mk2 16v is a great halo classic and I think will out perform the Corrado in the UK at least, Corrado's I do love but they are a hell of a lot more expensive to restore than a Golf and infact I think we are at Porsche money with maintenance and parts spend anyway. I always say yeah when it is done it done but that point never seems to materialise. Money is safer in a Porsche and I quite like the aero kitted 996s or 997s. As you say parts hunting is less of stressful exercise to build a car that is unique to you. I'd take the risk of a hartech build over bodywork, corrado engine build, parts supply and stagnant prices (or prices that don't keep up with the cost of restoration).

I've been on the fence this year about selling up my Corrado and my mk3 16v and buying a 996 aero kit or 4S. 997s are a bit rich for me but arguably a safer and better investment.

Off topic, but is anyone else having problems navigating this thread on corrado.net, for last 2 weeks or so, I cannot go back and forward page wise, unless I change the URL page nr to the one I want, get the same on all browsers, and on different machines, other threads seem ok, strange ...

So guys I took my fogs off and took off the Bosch lenses and fitted a spare set I have of hella ones- I m now in a good position to experiment and find a cheap UK solution. After finding that these bosch lenses are most likley obsolete as could only find one used set I set upon looking at familiar fogs.

I will call this firm up nest week and ask them to measure the lenses .  If they are correct £33 a set .

Good luck with this.  One of the best purchases I believe I made was getting a set of clear plastic fog lens covers to go over and protect the fogs.

Sure I might invest in a set of them.

I have purchased the glue to stick these bosch ones back on a some point as there was water ingeress because of poor quality adhesive,

Hi, Just to mention the problem you are likely to have is that the original Hella lenses have no side lip, the BOSCH ones are usually meant to be accessories in standalone frame mountings , for whatever reason Bosch decided to mould the lenses with an external lip all around, so very probably the Bosch ones you have were already ground down to size, not an easy job as I am finding,  I  bought the ones from ebay in an earlier entry (meant for an Astra), the visible lens dimensions appeared ok, but  but when I removed  the frames they had approximately a 3mm lip all around under the frame, this is probably going to be the same with most of  these alternatives, they will all require work.

The Germany guy Sprinter53 ?, on here and ebay, had found Hella lenses off another vehicle, but even these require grinding down to size.

By the way the Ring Microline ones are probably going to be too small, as Dimensions given on their website for the 2 types are, 75 x 143 x 68 , or for the other one:75 x 143 x 68, so as those dimensions will probably include the frames, the height at 75mm for a start will be too small (need 80-81mm), length should be 140-142mm.

If only VX Tuning ones in USA were selling theirs at a more reasonable price, they seem ideal as they are the correct dimensions to start with, but too rich for me.

Good luck anyway.

The Lens I was looking at is too small- I will keep on looking and have asked anther seller of French automotive  parts-  but in the mean time I have purchased one of these BMW blanks to test fit- its a bit like the early obsolete candian corrado fog blank that you can colour code part  number 535807197  GRU   - I would probs keep mine black- just an alternative to the Hella covers as these are more correct and more to my personal taste tbh.

I agree, I like those BMW blanks. Will look especially good on the silver car. I always liked the look of the early G60 Canadian Corrado with its blanks (prefer black than color coded) and orange signals.  I know it's not appropriate to the VR6 but I tackled the idea of orange signals with a smoke tinted film on top, it ties the orange within these, the side markers and the tail lights. But with yellow French e-codes it's too much colors for my taste.

I've been refurbishing a set of fogs and signals as well. I have a new set of each that I'll keep as a spare. So it was like an experiment at first but in the end I think it will look pretty good. I got a set of glass fog lenses from that Sprinter guy in Germany and I have to say, fit and quality is excellent. They were not cheap though. Not as impressed by the signal lenses unfortunately. So I'm trying with a guy in the US to see what kind of quality I'll get. So far, I have removed all four lenses. Cleaned really well. Waiting on the signal lenses before putting it all back. Keep us posted with the  next steps. Cheers!

Nice mate keep us posted be good to see some pictures .

I will get this blank in the next couple of days and test fit - if so you can still buy a set from bmw for under £30 - I’m guessing they won’t fit over a lens but may will fit without a fog unit - so would make for a good set for daily or long road trip - - might even look good 😎

That's right, it may just look good! I'll post some pictures once I'm further into the process.  Do you want me to check locally if I can find you some early G60 fog blanks mate?

Thanks for the offer mate but my G60 is late body (so late fogs) so early OE blanks may well not fit.  I would like to get a spare set of the late plastic housing  trims if the e30 blank fits and make some up for daily duties. .

Right, I haven't though of this. Here in Canada only pre-facelift for the G60 model. Yes, an extra set is a good idea. The guy I ordered the signal lenses from has them in orange late specs as well.

Love this Canadian car with the blanks .

Hi,

How did you remove the lenses without breaking them, (assuming these are late Fog's), its not easy to get a knife in to detach the sealant ?

These came out easy as the last owner had used substandard glue and the glue had failed -

The Frenxh fogs are no good or the other ones - We all know the Saab ones can fit but cross referencing them I believe them to be the same as a bmw which you can buy hella ones - hell though I wouldn’t be dremeling them myself - would pop down my local local glass supplier / stain glass window specialist to cut them / sand to size - wouldn’t cost to much .

I think all the different third-party lens types have been tried and none of them fit properly without modification, hence why the best option now is expensive custom replacement lenses. For early type fogs, there are a number of options, but for the late ones you will likely have to break the old lens to remove, even after heating the glue, and any replacement lenses will need to be ground to fit. which takea a long time at home wirth a dremel and risks breaking them.

I wonder would it be more sensible to put some pressure on Classic Parts to see if they are willing to remake them?

Corrado farm parts have made plastic versions of the late fogs for $100 a set (at the moment - on sale). VX tuning have a glass version but they appear to $175 each. You can't use halogen bulbs with either but they are direct fit (assuming you install them the correct way around). You can use LED bulbs. Mine are permantely disconnected as you can't really use the originals for fear of heat damage cracking the originals also.

I will soon get around to fitting my plastic lense fogs into my spare housings and will show pics etc. 99% of people won't notice and I'll just be happy my decent fogs can sit in the loft and appreciate to the point i'll be able to clear my mortgage one day.

That would be great but cant see it happening - cant even buy a set of wings - noticed also now some scabby chipped indicators folks asking £120 plus on ebay - oh my its getting worse by the year .

The way forward would be a combined fog and indicator, that way there’s no infringement of copyright and the fog is deleted. Who drives these car in fog anyway?

it would also give a smooth look to the front of the car?
