  1. Did you know that the last elephant that was killed by a road traffic accident with a volkswagen was called "Boris"? He had escaped from a zoo in Delhi and was hit by a diesel Lupo when crossing the road. While dazed, he crushed an old morris minor into the shape of a Peugeot 206 before passing out and dying.
  2. Did you know the president of Volkswagen Europe regularly scratches his back with the 22mm spanner that was used to tighten the wheel bolts on the 1962 Monte Carlo Rally winner's car?
  3. Hi, Well the obvious couple of things to look at are first of all the clutch - is it correctly disengaging? The pedal operates it through a hydraulic linkage so if there's air in the lines it'll not work right.. It's easy to bleed the clutch cylinder to rule that out. Second is the gear selector alignment and cables .. these are tricky to adjust (you're supposed to use a "special tool" from VW), but maybe that's all it requires.
  4. If you're dropping the clutch off now might be a Very Good Time to replace or at least check the condition of the timing chains too ..

    timing chain

That would have run for a while longer I'm sure. Mine was wearing the surface of the top rivets at 115k miles when it was replaced! And I've seen MUCH worse on this forum too. But fair enough, you've done it now and you won't have to worry about it. Probably ever..! The job takes a long time - you need to take the gearbox + clutch off to get in - the labour charges add up very quickly. Stealth are one of the most competitive for a job like this because they've done so many - they don't take as long as the other guys who are typically doing it for the first or second time, so they can charge less.
  6. Yes. Your VR is too hot (unless you are driving somewhere in the vicinity of the sun) Sounds like your thermostat is stuck or your radiatior is blocked.
  7. "avi" is just a container format - it describes how to encapsulate video and audio streams, it doesn't describe how you should encode those streams, hence why some avi files play just fine and others don't. FWIW xine on linux can play this (and pretty much everything else) just fine. You might need to download libffmpg for windows.
  8. Bear in mind the VR is a bit flat (by modern TDi standards) off-cam anyway.
  9. Also double check for air leaks post-maf and pre-lambda, they can throw off the real fuelling, even though the ECU will report no faults. It's not normal for a VR6 idle speed to oscillate, but it is normal for a VR6 lambda reading to oscillate in the range you describe. I would very much doubt that changing oil and plugs will help in the slightest - this is most likely caused by faulty sensors, or sensors reading the wrong things. And buying a 2nd hand MAF to swap out would be a good start ...
  10. The trick is to have RWD in very slow corners and for standing starts, and FWD for fast sweeping bends, without the weight/intertia penalty that 4wd brings. So which is faster depends on in what circumstance you are talking about. In a straight line down a road from a standing start it's always going to be RWD. You can bet that formula 1 cars won't go FWD though.
  11. I have heard other people say the samcos need more force on the clips as they are less flexible than OE. FWIW the VW clips are dead easy to attach/remove - if you have the right tool ...
  12. GSF do refurbed ones. VW will of course be able to supply, and it'll be arguably the best quality of any options, but it's usually also a refurbed part and it'll cost mucho dollarrrr...
  13. And this is in an industry where the average blue collar factory worker earns less than 40% of what the average worker *doing a same-skill job* in a car company earns. No wonder they're losing money faster than the government can borrow it from China.
  14. Sounds like a fuel line broken. The oil is probably just being washed off engine components (and the padding under the bonnet!) by the fuel..
  15. The fan and aux water pump control unit won't prevent the car from starting, so I would suggest you start by fiddling around with the ignition switch.. They go "funny" over the years and it's not uncommon to find this type of problem. Use the search, plenty of previous experiences of this..
  16. Jumping ahead of all the people who will say "Ignition switch".
  17. There's unlikely to be an R32 variant, due to the emissions bracket for tax (it's a mainstream car after all not a proper sports car), but there are rumours of a tuned 2.0 T with about 275 bhp.
  18. Yeah the TPS value will go from "less than 15 degrees" to "more than 90 degrees". Typically about 12 or 13 to 92 or 93.
  19. Better get the ECU scanned for error codes. Everything else is just guesswork and frankly you don't wanna be changing parts based on guesses when they're so hideously expensive..
  20. They'll do between 9 and 40 miles per gallon. Narrow it down for ya?? :)
  21. The ISV controls the amount of air that bypasses the throttle (so that the engine can idle). It's supposed to close (almost) fully when you're accelerating and be opened instantly when you come off the throttle. With it disconnected, of course none of this works. So. How is your throttle position sensor?
  22. The only sensible way to test the crank sensor is with an oscilloscope. You might be aswell to pick one up cheap on ebay and just swap it for fun. They're expensive new though..
