Loose accelerator pedal

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I doubt this is normal but just wanted to check. If I place my hand under the accelerator pedal, I am able to lift it a good inch or two, this cant be right can it?

The pedal is also fairly stiff to push down on. Am I right in thinking these 2 symptoms can be resolved by a new accelerator cable? Or is there something else that needs fixing?

Yes that is normal. The pedal is designed to go down, not up :-)

To test the cable, simply disconnect it at both ends (easy) and slide it by hand. If it's really stiff, change it....but they're about £35 tho. The Corrado throttle body has heavy springs in it anyway, so they're quiet heavy in operation anyway.

Read my post again, lol, mine goes up aswell as down... :p

Is it only the VR6 throttle body that has heavy springs or all Corrados? I ask because _leon_'s accelerator pedal is noticebly lighter than mine.

Checked with the stealers today and they said £26

Ha ha, well down is better than up where acceleration is concerned :-)

It's the 2.9 throttle that's heavy mate, the 2.8 throttles are MUCH lighter.

The 2.9 has an indirect double spring operation to stagger the opening (it mimics the way the step works in the 2.8 throttle - which only have 1 spring) and is heavy.

Your mate's Leon is drive by wire I reckon, hence the lightness?

£26! Git, I paid £35 last year....good to see they're reducing prices tho.

Sorry, I should have said _leon_ has a G60.

Hahahaha, aye, not too bad with the £26 too I reckon.

What do you think needs fixed to sort the "pedal moving up" problem then? Could this be linked to possibly needing a new accelerator cable, or is this something else?

That's just the way the pedal is. The clutch pedal has an aft travel stop, as does the brake pedal. The throttle pedal doesn't. It's free to move up and down as much as it wants.

You can tell when the cable is siezing because when you press the pedal down, it stays down!
