how do i wire up a 5v supply in my car?

as above guys and girls, i want to fit my phone/gps charger in to the car so i dont have to use the lighter sock.

 

any ideas?

Where do you intend installing it on the dash? I thought the lighter was 12v anyway???

your charger will reduce the voltage from 12v to 5v so all you need is a lead with a lighter socket on the end (you can get these in most accesory shop) wire that to a fused 12v supply and an earth and plug your charger in then hide the lot behind the dash just leaving the end that goes into the phone out

Personally, I'd look at routing the wires behind the centre console and splicing them in to your ashtray supply and earth, it'll always be on then (if thats what you want of course?)

Let me get this straight...

 

You have a 240vAC->5vDC charger for a device that you want to be able to use in the car? If so you won't be able to use the 12v lighter socket without a DC-DC converter anyway.

 

To be honest I'm not exactly sure what you're asking but once it's clear I'm sure there'll be a simple solution.

Bcstudent picked up what i missed :oops: if it's a house charger that you want to fit 240v ac to convert to 5v dc then an inverter is the only way but it would be cheaper to get a universal car charger and do what i said in my first post

Carpy25 had it right. I want to wire the car charger in so its all nice and behind the dash. If i can just wire up the lighter insert to a fused supply then thats great, ill do that. Ill just use the wires from the lighter socket as stan says :-)

Mentioning the 5v part was what made it confusing. If you're just looking to hardwire a 12v charger in then there are a few options; you've mentioned two of them. I'd be inclined to sort out a seperate power supply for the charger rather than render the cigarette ligher redundant myself. You just never know when you may need it.

It wont render it useless if he splices it in, or solders it, as the voltage will just be shared on a parallel path.
