VR6 Overheating.......advice please!

Recommended Posts

There's still coolant in the engine, plus you have to say that if you can run for one hour and the temp gets to around 110 C then it's getting some cooling from somewhere, most likely what the aux pump is pushing through the heater matrix though.

If the top hose is hot and the bottom hose cold even at 110, then coolant is not circulating the radiator, that simple. The most likely causes for that are:

Thermostat, which has been changed so should be OK

Radiator, if it's blocked, no circulation. You say the head has been swapped, what was the condition of the old one, was it furry inside, has the car always used coolant additive? If not, the rad could have become blocked.

Water pump, the pump could contribute to a problem but water still circulates. And again, it's been changed recently.

There's nothing else in there. So by process of elimination you'll have to check the rad next!

Update: So I've had the radiator changed, and it's exactly the same, it gets to 110 after about 30 mins then keeps going until I turn the heater on! The lower hose from the radiator is still cold after an hour, so what else could it possibly be?

In the last two months, the following has been replaced:

Temperature sensor [Yellow]

Radiator

Thermostat

Water Pump

Cheers

Can only think that the new thermostat is faulty or fitted the wrong way around(not sure if this is possible) or there's a blockage somewehere else in the system. Does water flow through the block and head ok, and the other hoses? You might have to try running it without a thermostat ans see what happens.
