Knock Sensors

Recommended Posts

I have a fault code for Knock Sensor II in my vr6. It still runs fine which is weird, but anyway, am I right in thinking this is the one at the front of the engine behind the oil cooler?

Also I had one off a golf vr6 engine which I plugged in instead to see if the code would clear but it wouldnt, is that becuase they have to be bolted to the block in order for the ecu to detect them?

One more question! I looked it up on ETKA and there are 2 part numbers, one is the same as the spare golf vr6 sensor and one is different, does anyone know the correct partnumber for my car? Its a 1993... Its too well hidden behind the oil cooler for me to see the number and dont want to strip it all off to find that my spare one is the wrong one!

Knock sensor is a microphone which listens for knocking i.e pinking do not over tighten when fitting 10 foot ponds only other wise it becomes too sensitive. Have you tried putting your V.I.N number into Etka?

No I haven't. I will try that later, I'm new to etka and havnt had a proper play about with it yet.

So is it normal for the ecu to think a sensor is dead if it isnt screwed to the block?

yes it is as it needs to be connected to the block for it to pick up the pinking vibrations.

simon

also i could do with ETKA but dont no where to get hold of it? any one know how? could you pm me please

There are 2 knock sensors, one on the front and one on the back of the block.

I would have thought that all that VAGCOM looks for is electrical continuity (ie is it connected to the wiring loom and not broken?), but I stand to be corrected on this.

Best wishes

There are two knock sensors on the VR6, you are probably messing about with the wrong one ... ;)

There's one on each side of the block, for the two banks of cylinders.

The ECU can't detect anything other than closed or open circuit, it doesn't have any way of telling if it's screwed into the block or not.

Also note that if the ECU thinks a knock sensor is dead, the engine will run fine, but that bank of cylinders will have their ignition timing 100% retarded. (i.e. you will lose performance.)
