jazzdevil 0 Posted November 24, 2009 So, obviously a hardy few will register their thoughts at the TG interweb site for the 'who has produced the most great cars' conundrum, posited on tonight's show... and even more certainly, knowing the CF, none of us will really agree on those suggestions - let the debate/bickering/bitchslapping commence!!! I'm off to research my carefully considered answer... possibly mulling over p0rn at the same to keep my brain active  Ok, so having given this a minimal amount of thought... and very much depending on your definition of 'great' (i.e. great to drive, engineering brilliance (for their respective era), styling (again, by era), iconic...); I'd suggest: Alfa = 6 (6C, GT (original), Spider, Alfasud, SZ, 8C Competizione) Ford = 5 (Model T, GT40 (original), RS200, Escort Cosworth, Focus RS) VW = 5 (Bug, Mk1 & Mk2 GTi, Corrado, R32) Audi = 4 (Quattro, S2, TT, R8) Porsche, Ferrari etc all become a bit too subjective, so I've left them off this list... who wants to take the first pop at me then? Alex_G60_Fanatic 0 Posted November 24, 2009 they're bound to chose Alfa... :?
vwdeviant 0 Posted November 24, 2009 another for vw! how could you overlook the splitty campervan :) Or the Type 3 in all flavours, Notch/Fast/Square back... Actually only one company has made consistantly "Great" cars.... and that's TVR... if you define "Great" as: madder than a box of alzheimer suffering frogs on absinthe......... with the ability to kill you with a random Tree/wall at any given oppertunity...

For example, I personally wouldn't put VW in the top 5. I can't stand any of the air cooled VWs, or MK1s, or Sciroccos. I don't see what is "great" about an ugly, rusting panel van with a severely underpowered engine. Same applies to Beetles, notchbacks, squarebacks, Baron Greenbacks or any other kind of back involving a wheezy, pathetic little air cooled engine, but some folk love them :D ! The MK2, Corrado and MK5 GTI are the ONLY dubs I like and 3 cars just aren't enough to justify "consistently great" in my book :D I haven't given this much, if any, thought tbh cause I don't give a rats tbh..... but two car makers who, imo, have made a long line of "great" cars are Jaguar and BMW. jazzdevil 0 Posted November 24, 2009 Definitely open to interpretation - which is why things like the Beetle, the splitty van and Mk1 GTi etc would have to make the VW list as while they might not be universally applauded, their impact on motoring history - like the Model T, is undeniable. Not sure if it means anything but the Top Gear page on BBC website shows Clarkson wedged into a Stratos, so wonder if they're going to vote Lancia and include the Flaminia, Aurelia, 037 and the original Delta? I always enjoy reading your posts Kev. The this is my opinion, like it or lump it attitude :notworthy:  Brilliant. And we love the old dubs exactly for that reason they've slow and rusty  I love em!

LOL, well I'm glad someone likes my scribings instead of being annoyed by them, which is usually the case with some people on here  They're not intended to be "Like it or lump it" though, but can come across as a bit "Clarkson" sometimes 8) My old MK1 16V was a rusty death trap and my foot fell through the floor of my mate's old Beetle after landing from "getting air" over humped bridge, so those things kind killed my love affair with old VWs  My ownership of an Allegro and a Cavalier nearly killed my love of cars off completely, but that's another story! No other really amazing cars for me.
Jim 2 Posted November 24, 2009 Jaguar has made some iconic cars, but it hasn't made that many.. most of their stuff through the 70's and 80's was pretty crap. Stuff like the D-Type, E-Type of course are right up there but then you have to skip forward to the XJ220 - and that was nothing like the car it was promised to be! I wonder if they're looking for companies who have made consistently different but brilliant models, or someone like BMW who've just evolved their great cars every few years and just kept making them better, even though they sported the same name. And they should lose points for the SH!T they've unleashed onto the roads (see X3, X5, X6!!!)
Toad 0 Posted November 24, 2009 I don't like the E type. Of all the car manufacturers the one who produced the most models that I'd like to have a go with is...............................Ford. Love TVRs, Porsches (but how many times can I say 911??), a lot of Japanese cars, The V8 and V12 Vantage etc. Just can't get excited over a lot of manufacturers. Like Kev, aircooled does absolutely nothing for me, I probably would give a mk1 a go to see what it is like, but mk2s don't *feel* that good to me, the standard seats are too upright and the cable change box is a bit toss. Ferraris :gag: Proper American muscle cars appeal too

Jim 2 Posted November 29, 2009 Really enjoyed this weeks episode... poles apart from last weeks. The Lancia feature seemed genuinely heart-felt and there seemed to be a lot more consideration given to the car enthusiasts amongst us, rather than the general public. I almost spat out my tea laughing when Jeremy compared the gear shifter on the kit car Stratos to being like "one of bugs bunnys ears" - brilliant
Critical_Mass 10 Posted November 29, 2009 Yeah, TG is starting to get back to standards. Loved the Stratos, was suprised to see that Sting struggled to control it - set up maybe?

The 037 and Delta were epic in rallying. A friend had a Fulvia - beautiful, responsive, fun and it broke down on way back from Le Mans.. No AA cover for the trip and he "didn't believe in mobile phones" - £350 to recover to UK then trailered it home. A friend of a friend had an Evo Integrale too - I honestly thought I'd die in that car one day. Didn't expect them them to cite the Montecarlo as a great though... I fappin' love them! Went to buy one once but found I barely fit in it, so had to surrender my dream :-( Most of the money ultimately went into buying the C about 18mths later. coullstar 0 Posted November 29, 2009 I sat watching the Lancia bit and thought they were going to miss out the Delta, I actually cheered out loud when it came on. I dont know why but it is without doubt my all time favourite car. Instantly went onto Pistonheads to have a look - Im in love...http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/1276733.htm Always have a look at these every 6months or so and prices are steadily going up. Might have to sell the Raddo, get a loan and buy one before its too late.
Jim 2 Posted November 29, 2009 Did enjoy seeing it go up the road, and the cinematography was awesome.. the close up rolling shots of things like the nose, etc.. would love to see them film a Corrado like that!

jazzdevil 0 Posted November 29, 2009 Amen sir! :notworthy: A car of legend... they gave it a nice feature - should help kick the prices a bit further north too :) ...backed with UNKLE's 'Trouble in Paradise (Variation on a Theme)' which they used a series or so back when Clarkson was blitzing across Tokyo in the Nissan GTR.
