Benjevw 10 Posted March 20, 2012 (edited) A few pics of what I've been up2 the last few days. Crossmember off Engine mount looked a bit old n shizer but after takin it apart didn't look that worn. Grr Keep pressin the rong button!!!! Rustiness ! And last pic of the bracket I needed. New and old. That bracket again. Went a bit mad on the bench grinder, cleanin all the bolts I took out! Gave some a blast of hammerite. Just cus I had some left lol. Crossmember and rad support grinded up ready for paint. Painted! And with braket chopped off of old panel. More painted bits Sprayed up with toolstations very own wax protection spray. Good ol stuff! All back together now. Had a battle with a load of old jubilees on the power steering pipe , ended up just grinding them off . Got a load of new 1s and connected it all back up. Didn't loose much more thanx to a latex glove finger and some old rags. Thanx wheeler deelers lol. sprayed where all the panels met up with the wax protection stuff just to make sure. Fitted the top rad fixings I got from daves16v iirc. Look lovely with the polished Alan bolts . Didn't take a pic I'll add one next time. As the front bumpers off I hacked out the headlight washer jets and pipes. Again all the jubilees were fooked! Wondering whether to keep em or get it all smoothed. Think that's a job for the future as I need this on the road ASAP . I read about the new mot laws that are comin into play and I'm guessing these would be usefull for some people with xenons! I'll put it all back in for now as there's 2 gaping holes in the bumper. Just need to get the damn brakes bled. Keep putting it off for some reason. I got a easibleed thing but dunno if to just do it manually with my dad? Any tips from someone who's done it recently. Cheers Edited March 20, 2012 by Benjevw
KIPVW 0 Posted March 20, 2012 (edited) waiting  wow it certainly needed attention didn't it! Edited March 20, 2012 by KIPVW
destructiv dave 0 Posted March 20, 2012 Bloody hell - that's some serious rot. Did this live by the sea at some stage (or even in it!!)?
Benjevw 10 Posted March 20, 2012 Pic of washers. Didn't let me put anymore pics on Lol yea man my dad keeps sayin it's been swimming. Rear beam needs a clean up aswell :( keep finding more n more crap but at least the chassis fine:s ! Don't spose anyone knows anything about its life before me? It's had a bit of work done( not good work), like a unrated headlight loom and I think different wipers. Bit of a long shot I know but only have history upto before the last owner had it! Cheers guys
KIPVW 0 Posted March 20, 2012 Great progress mate, seems a pain at the time but good now it's done. headlight washers are a nice touch if you get them working :)
Benjevw 10 Posted March 21, 2012 Funny thing is it seems to have been done already ! There was remains of light blue paint on the splitter bar and bottom of rad panel? Wierd. Yea but anyway I'm glad it's done now n outa the way. Need some garden hose and a way of attaching them to the bumper as the fixings were rotten as!
Benjevw 10 Posted March 24, 2012 All back together now :) Nicked a bit of garden hose from the reel! Lol. was a tiny bit loose so wrapped a bit of Tape around the connector to make it tight. Bumper went on easier than I thort( on my own). My mk2 1 was a bitch to get the bolts lined up but no problems here.! There's a little yellow plug behind the passenger headlight, anyone know where this goes? Hasn't been connected since I've had it and can't find anything to plug it onto. I would put a pic up but the app won't let me without paying!! :( Still need to bleed the bloody brakes, hook up the head unit and get the glovebox back in and give it a service. And the BMCs on its way :D Cheers
Benjevw 10 Posted March 25, 2012 Bled the brakes this morning, went around the block to test em out and not much happened :/ kept pumping them every now and again to stiffen them up but still didn't make much difference. You can feel them working and do slow you down a tiny bit still not road worthy. Took it up the road to where my dad works as his mate used to have one. First he said to get braided lines for the rear? I know old rubber lines are useless but would this effect the front brakes? He worked out what the noise from the engine was aswell. He said the water pump bearing was a bit noisy but nothin to worry about lol !! Gunna bleed it all again with the easibleed to see if it helps, fingers crossed. Benjevw 10 Posted March 28, 2012 Here's a pic of the unknown plug! Any ideas ?
Benjevw 10 Posted March 28, 2012 Few pics of the bay. Need to get the metal polish me thinks!
Benjevw 10 Posted March 29, 2012 Im having 2nd thoughts after getting some bad news from tesco insurance!!!!!! What a load of borelocks! I've been with them for 6-7 years(as a named driver) and only when calling them to start my own policy, they tell me tht I can't transfer my no claims!! They told my dad when adding me 6-7 years ago this would be fine( the reason for goin with them in the first place). Meaning that now I have feck all no claims to my name.GRRRRRR! Mega pi55ed off! I ran through a couple of quotes this morning, adding drivers and whatever I could to bring it down. Before I found out I'd been had the quote was 950 odd The cheapest quote I got today was £2400! There's no way I can afford that. I'm thinkin what my options are as ive always wanted a rado :( So either: Sell it/ break it ! Keep it and rebuild/make it mint. Swap it for a smaller engined version? Any interest ? (worth a shot)Lol. Anyway any ideas/solutions will be considered. Thanx in advance Ben
Portent 0 Posted March 29, 2012 That's a total git. Have you tried looking at a classic car policy? Or phone around as some places might still take your "named driver" years towards an NCD. It's worth a try with a decent specialist broker.
Benjevw 10 Posted March 29, 2012 Yea totally! My friend just this second called me and said there's a way to keep your no claims so I'll have a look at that when I'm home. Cheers for the heads up mate I'll get on the blower later . Any recommendations? Just had a look at valvers :(
Benjevw 10 Posted March 29, 2012 Wahey!! I've just been on the fone to elephant and as long as I have the policy number and company name I can use the no claims I accumulated! Win :D So with my dad on the policy i got quoted £688....…......! As long as it stays in that area somewhere il be smiling all the way to the bank! Haha Recieved the BMC from corrado16 aswell. It dosent look quite right! I was reading a thread not so long ago about fitting it the right way around, and looking at it it looks like the same was done on this ! The end you can see the filter in should be nearest the headlight surely? The other side just looks like a inwards rubber cone, and the stickers the wrong way up lol. Back soon with more pics( off of my drive :) )
Benjevw 10 Posted April 14, 2012 Just a quick update as haven't done much recently :/ Fitted the bmc along with a fresh new sticker( most important part) lol. Picked up the new engine last night too! Looks alright, deffo worth the 60 notes I paid for it. Would've liked it to have been ready for santapod next week but as I've done f all I'll be in the golf agen :(
Benjevw 10 Posted April 16, 2012 Removed the new lump from my golf today:) Two words: fookin heavy! Couldn't get a crane at short notice so pretty much rolled it out the boot onto a ladder then slid it down onto a trolley thing ! Easy as that.... Only wrecking the dipstick :(

robo22sri 10 Posted May 9, 2012 Kept the 312s in the end mate 312's under 16's?!? Thought the min was 17's
Benjevw 10 Posted May 9, 2012 312's under 16's?!? Thought the min was 17's My 16s just about fit over the 312s with no probs. I used TT discs and pads but as the calipers wer already on it I don't know what they're from, probs a TT or r32 maybe! haven't really had a chance to test em out yet tho :(
Critical_Mass 10 Posted May 9, 2012 Ben - the yellow connector is for the sidelights. Its unplugged when a uprated loom is fitted. So just tape it up to stop water getting at it - though there should be a plug on the inside of the passenger wing next to headlight for it to plug into. Great news about the NCB - bet you cant wait to get it on the road :-) Oh and a eezibleed kit is very useful to bleed the brakes.

Yea I found out what it was for a few weeks ago but haven't had time to tape it up or fit the new loom. Yea cheers bud, I just hope they don't try anymore funny business when I finally get round to insuring it. I took the name of who told me just incase tho :) I ended up getting a cheaper sealey easibleed as I'm tight lol but seems to work fine. I'll Hopefully sort it out this weekend and figure out whats up with the brakes. There's a slight hiss when the pedals pushed, which I thort was the servo but my mk2 golf has the same noise! The brakes do work but feels like just excess travel in the pedal.
Critical_Mass 10 Posted May 9, 2012 Think mine hisses too and the brakes are fine. Ive got a Gunson's Eezibleed and its a good piece of kit for about £20 from halfrauds.
Benjevw 10 Posted May 12, 2012 O cool that's good it's not only me then lol. I'm going to adjust the servo from behind the pedal tomorrow to see if that helps as its had bigger brakes! Am I right thinking this could be the prob? Picking up a decat for 15 quid tomorra too! We'll see how that goes lol. As I've said before the cars running a bit rough on start up so I had a look at the isv thinking this could be the prob! Are you meant to be able to hear it sorta buzzing when the engines running or is it meant to be silent? I haven't taken it off to clean it yet , I'll probly do that tomorrow Aswell. Thanx for any help Ben P.s finally booked the ferry for vdub island😃. Made sure I'm on the lower deck this time to avoid dragging the rear end up the ramp! Nasty feeling!! Benjevw 10 Posted May 15, 2012 I took the ISV off for a clean yesterday. Can't believe how much dirt came out of it! Ill be puttin it back on tonight to see if it's cured the lumpiness on startup. What does the black plastic box with the metal plate on the bottom do? It comes off the ISV . Also this pipe Think it's the pcv? Or something like that lol. It's got a split in it so I need a new 1. Should I get a new pipe or fit the catch tank and block the pipe off? Ben
