Your Corrado Story

Recommended Posts

Ok peeps, let us know a little bit more about how you came around to owning your beloved C, ie when you bought it, why you bought it and how much you paid, or even how many you've owned! :)

I'll start the ball rolling by saying I remember the first Corrado I saw back in '89 (a rare F feg 16v in Tornado Red) and thinking WOW that's a stunner! Is it really a Volkswagen?! I'd love one of those :-P

Obviously I could only dream back then (as I was still at school!)

It was only in November last year, after owning a succession of quality VW and Audi machines, that I finally achieved my goal and bought my first one. A one owner, 1995 N reg Mystic Blue Storm with 96k on the clock and FVWSH for £5,500, and since then I haven't looked back. The Corrado is still a thing of beauty, even after all these years and get's looks wherever it goes, and I really would not change it for anything 8)

Over to you......

You got a bargain compared with me DelCorrado. I prefer your colour, too.

I bought my Corrado Storm (M reg 27/6/95, classic green) just before the prices seem to have dropped.

I paid £7200 in May 2002 at a Skoda Garage near Edinburgh for one with an identical mileage. Included in that, though, was a 2-year warranty.

The car was one owner from new with box file of all receipts and full vwsh.

I have had to fix several things not covered by the warranty - mostly small and mostly familiar to the Corrado-experienced, but the garage had put on 3 new tyres, front discs/pads and got it thro mot by replacing some brake pipes and welding an exhaust hanger.

Great car, though, so smooth after my previous vehicles, all but one of the 11 were new but much smaller.

As we all know, the C's looks are knockout - you get a thrill just walking up to it in a car park and knowing it is yours and you are going to get into it and turn the key!

My first proper look around a Corrado was in 1995 at the dealer. They had a pair of Storms in the showroom. Brand new  They were truly amazing new......and expensive!

My girlfriend found my C in her local newspaper, went and had a look at it gladly gave the dealer £5000 plus my ropey old C reg 325i coupe which I bought for £100 the week before, LOL! It had 73K on the clock with full VW history.

I was initially dissapointed by the performance. The 325i was a lot quicker low down but the Corrado was a lot smoother and quieter. I bought it anyway, took it to stealth for a service and check over and we found the cam sensor was dead, stuck a new one in and the dyno shot round to 200bhp on the nail with 193ft/lb torque. A good buy I think!

well after being a totally commited Ford man.....escort1300's,XR3i and Sierra XR4i i got into german coupes over 10 years ago 1993 to be exact and went through Porsches(924lux,924S and 944 turbo) til i got bit badly for something stupid on the 944 turbo...A/C compressor clutch at a bill of over £400 :x   .......after a very brief flirtation with a mercedes 190e auto(3 months to be exact)i bought a hi-mile but FSH'd Audi UR-quattro which i loved but the future missus heard horror stories about maintenance of them etc so sold up to keep her happy  .......eventually ending up with a brand new Ford Ka in 1997(great handling wee motors btw)then after a couple of years smoking about in that the missus let me go for something german and expensive :-P .....looked at a low-mile N-plate 2.0 8v at the local VW dealer in early 99 but A) it was sold B) they wanted £13,500 for it    and C) i would be hankering after more power  ...............so walked across the road and spotted a pretty nice BMW 318ti sport-pack.......bought that but always hankered after a C,looked at a few in the next year or so,inc a 42k mile 95N VR,50k mile 95N 2.0 16v,a 56k mile 95M storm, even a 22k mile 96N 2.0 8v auto.........then after 2 1/2 years BMW ownership (about the summer of 2001) set a budget of up to £11k-ish and got feelers out for a mystic blue storm............even considered getting a brand-new BMW mini cooper but thankfully realised early-on(this was just prior to the MINI being launched btw  that they would be common as A******* anyway nothing was coming my way so just happened to glance through the autotrader and a low mile classic green storm for sale at a newly opened lexus dealership in edinburgh drew my attention........a phone call later had me heading 125+miles down just to have a look........2 weeks later and about £10,500 lighter i had my then 38k mile FVWSH'd 1 previous owner classic green storm.........never once regretted it and have no intention whatsoever of selling

Saw it on top gear orginally when I was 13-14 and it first came out...... though, I want one of those!!...

13 years later, was bored one Sunday.. and had been following autotrader prices for corrados for the last couple of years.., went to garage that had one.. exept they didn't..it had been sold. but the one round a the corner had just got a LHD VR6 specimen in..took it for a test drive (my big mistake!!)... good price had to buy it after then....

This was 2 months before the VR6 came on top gear again... I've a feeling its actually worth more now than what I paid!!..

I missed out on the housing boom, but have manged to buy one of the only cars that appreciate in value,.. almost by accident!!.. not really though since I was always goning to buy one at some point..

when i was 16 i started my first job at currys and my bos had just bought a vr6, black with black leather for about £11000. i loved it. i got my first car (a pug 305, then a year later i bought my CRX which i fell in love with...then i wanted something a little bigger and more comfortable but still as rare and fast...so i thought back to the corrado and started looking.....a month later i bought my 1995 vr6 with 80k for £4600..(not bad for a 3rd car!!!)..gave it a clean and stuck some storm alloys on it and there you go....short story. I was impressed with the handling after my crx as everyone on the honda forums had been telling me what a pig it is to drive. i'll probably keep it for a few years now though, its growing on me 8)

I wasn't too bothered about cars originally. Nothing out there really 'grabbed' me or made me pay any attention.. until the day I drove in my mates M reg black VR6. We hit the motorway doing 100MPH in 3rd gear and I just couldn't believe the power.. I used to love how it looked in the car park and I loved it even more when I finally went out in it. I knew then that I had to have one!

Being as I was 20 at the time insurance was a nightmare so I waited till I was 21, and rushed out and bought the first Corrado I saw - L reg 2.0 16v in blackberry metallic which I owned for a year. It was a very nice car, but I did have to spend a bit on it in the year I owned it. Got a bit dissillusioned with it (didn't have the performance of the VR6 and it kept giving me hassle) so I sold it, owned a Saxo for a year, started to get 'the urge' and bought another Corrado. Peer pressure off other forum members I tell you!

I was aiming for a VR6 this time around, but leew pm'd me to tell me he was thinking about selling up, and as I was so local would I like to come around to take a look see in case he definately decided to sell. Had a look, was very impressed, wanted to buy it, waited for lee to decide, bought it, insured it (  ) and am now enjoying it :)

So out of 4 cars in my life, two have been Corrados... not bad going :D

I was a devoted member of the Ford clan - having had 2 XR3is - but my mate's (VR6Paul) uncle had a black Mplate VR6 and insured Paul on it for a few days about 3yrs ago - he took me out in it and I thought it was incredible - I had never really even seen one before then. So Paul got his off his uncle in Feb 03 and the more I saw it the more I wanted one so we went car hunting and picked up mine K plate 2.0l 16v with 84k on the clock in Dark Burgundy Pearl in August of last year. Haven't looked back ever since. Would aspire to own a VR one day but will need a bit of cash first. Won't part with mine for love nor money unless it's for another one though! 8)

I started driving when i was 21 had bikes before, went with a ford orion to start with. Was fine as a first car, cheap to run, insurance was a little steap cheap to repair. after a yr i wanted something a bit more, stand out a little and not everyone would have them. seen a few on the roads and fell in love with the style and the motion on the roads.

Being as my age i had to look for a 1.8 16v. i wanted preferable Blue, service history and lowish miles,

I looked at a couple of red ones and white ones as i just wanted a corrado, waited an extra week as i was getting impatient as to get one then it came up on auto trader

H Reg Corrado Helious Blue Mettalic, 82k on clock, standard, FSH For £2850, I went and had a look, Got taken out in it was well impressed. No faults or anything i could see Left a deposit and picked it up a few days later, that was Feb 2002. The only thing i wish sometimes is i had gone for the G60 version to start with as i found that it wasn't much more to insure but other than that ain't looked back and haven't had any majour problems with her really in the 2 yrs of ownership. :D 8)

Didn't really notice Corrados until the press started to rave about the VR6 when it was released in 1992. At the time I was driving a Pug 205 GTI 1.9, and slowly but surely the Corrado bug got worse, saw a Storm at a dealers in 1995 and new I had to have one....

Time came to change the Pug, but I made a big mistake and listened to the missus and bought a Land Rover Discovery TDi in 1998    (Babies on the way... etc.) - talk about from the sublime to the ridiculous.... I was slightly put off a VR6 at the time by some stupid grease-mokey-tyre-changing-fekwitt who told me that "they're not much faster than yer 205 you know" and like a fool I took his word without actually driving one  -2nd mistake!

Anyway, the Corrado itch never got scratched and never went away until I read some article in the Times late 2002/early 2003 about Golf VR6 prices being very reasonable, so started to consider a Golf VR6 as a second car.... then thought "feck it" why not do it properly and go for a Corrado VR6...

Started to look at prices on AutoTrader - found a '96 N reg. in Feb 2003 at a small specialist dealer in the Midlands, went to look at it and could tell straight away that altough it had had 5 previous owners it had been well looked after, 83k on the clock, big blue folder with some VWSH/some specialist SH/every receipt... Contacted the last 2 owners, got the loan ( ) and handed over the cash.... went to pick her up on Valentines day and never looked back....

First I heard about Corrado's was as a schoolboy, when I saw it in a feature on VW's new sports car in, ahem, Mayfair Magazine! (Only bought it for the articles, honest, don't tell me mum!) Knew I had to have one when I was old enough. After a sucession of crap first cars (Morris Marina anyone?!) finally saw the light and got a lovely Mars Red Golf. That hooked me on VW's, and the next step was a hankering for a Corrado. Saw a lovely looking 1991 16v in Autotrader, fairly near me , in Cambridge. Got straight on the phone and went to see it, and bought it in Nov 98 for £5,850 (he wanted £6,000). Guy didn't really want to sell it, but had to as he used it for business and needed to turn up in something newer, so was buying a new Audi. Have had it ever since, so am the second owner from new. not bad for a 14 year old car!

Still love it to bits, although may be after a VR for the future, but still keeping the 16v. :D

I dont really remember when i first became 'aware' of corrado's, I've been in to cars since I was a kid but I cant honestly say i drooled over them specifically in my youth.

I used to have a mk4 astra SXI which fell foul of a combination of a tight bend, diesel on the road and a large metal barrier. After it was written off and I got the insurance payout i decided i wanted to look for something, fast, fun, but cheap (compared to the 12k i paid for my mk4!!)

I looked at a whole range of things, 200SX's, MR2's, BMW's....then eventually i remembered the C! looked on autotrader, checked out insurance and found i could only afford the 16v, looked at autotrader again (this time ignoring the VR's and g60s! ;)) and spotted a nice looking red 1990 about 30miles from me.

Went for a test drive with my dad (moral and machanical support!) and we both fell in love. Dad's normally sensible about these things and had been suggesting a fiesta or corsa, but as soon as he drove the C he was asking if he could get insured on it too 8) 3 days after i test drove it, i owned it and i'm still loving it! In a way its made me glad i smashed the Astra, the C's 12 years older but it just as well equiped and a million times more fun.

The first time I became aware of the Corrado was around 8 years ago.

I was a courier having pulled into a business premise entrance. Wrong entrance  should have gone next door so rather than drive around I squeezed through a gap in between units with there package, walked round the corner to be confronted with a parked up black G60, man what a site. That weekend I looked into buying one finding out I couldn’t afford it  gutted, if I remember right the G60 was going for around 9-11 K.

Anyhow 3-4 years later I was driving down the A14 towards Huntingdon, looked over to the opposite carriage way to see this dark green Corrado owning the road. I thought that does it I don’t care how much they cost :p I am going to have one.

I ended up paying 5 K  result

Had a couple of Golfs (Black 5-door 1.3 and a black 8v GTi) but after the Gti got written off decided to save my money for something a bit special. Was considering a Rallye but was put off by it being left hand drive. Then in The Golf magazine I spotted Andreas Kain (spelling) and his monster turbo'd VR. Thought, hmmm thats nice. Originally had 1.8 16v in mind, then the 2.0 16v then i wondered if I'd get insured on a G60. Phoned the insurance company and was £100 CHEAPER than my Golf GTi. Saved up and after being the Jackal for exactly 1 year to the day my Golf got written off, went to Walsal and bought my Black G60 for £4300. Not bad for 3rd car at 21 years old eh? Not regretted it since although I really fancy a bi-turbo, 4wd VR6

I didnt set out to buy a Corrado, actually wanted a mint 16v Mk2. Sinse my car is also my daily driver, I started to wonder how I could have a special looking golf (by that I mean a golf I REALLY like), that I use everyday. So my mind started to wander, away from VW, onto Audi, looked at various coupes but reconned they would be too lardy for me. I kind stopped looking at settled with the 16v Golf I had. Went to GTi inters last year, hoping for insperation, and came away knowing one thing for sure - I liked the sound of the G60 Corrado I had heard! I came home, and still content with the golf (it was soooo fast with the ABF), I didnt look about.

About mid July, i started to get a bit itchy again. I looked at my options, 16v golf, corrado VR or G60, Vento VR. I decided that I didnt want the VR, so was looking at 16v golfs and C G60's again.....looked at a load of Golfs, all of them dissapointed me in some way, just couldnt find the right one. I looked at 1 G60 corrado with 120k on the clock, it had a dirty grey interior, faded tornado pink paint, and didnt seem that fast. This actally put me off the G60 C, so I looked at more and more golfs, and one day spotted a 81k G60 C for £1800, with no tax. I went to see it, and it was really clean inside and out, had a black interior. It had no sevice History, and no charger rebuild and the ABS light was on!! But I thought to myself............ hmm...... £1800! That left me a hoooge pile of cash to do the repairs and more. So I bought the beastie! I actually think I got a good deal. I fixed the breaks, had the charger and head rebuild a P&P and had a Full supersprint system and manifold put on, for around the same total as I could of spent on a car still needing the work! 8)

I had it off the road from Aug to Dec last year, and although I was initially disappointed with it coming from the high reving 16v with the kick at 4.5k, to the smooth deliver of power fromt eh G60 was a huge change, but I have sinse realised, once rolling the corrado is probably a fair bit faster....and its still growing on me! 8)

all of my friends were into vw's and it came that time when i needed a new car. i wanted to get a vw but i didnt know what kind to get. jettas are way over done here and so are gti's. so i was pretty set on getting a golf and working with that. then i saw a corrado go by one day on my way to school, (i had never seen one in person that i can remember) and i was sold. little did i know this car would be a huge pain in the ass. i bought the car for $3,900 from this guy who lived near me and had a corrado graveyard. i ended up spending almost $2,000 to get up to a decent running shape. ever since then i have been hooked. im almost $10,000 into my car now and i still plan on doing more. =]

I'd never really been in to my VW's b4 the corrado, well never so much that I would get one. I had my Nova SR first car, then 2 Escort Rs Turbo's & was really only ever had eye's for my ford turbo's. Then just over 2 years ago my mate told me he wanted to sell his Polo G40, so off I went looking at C's with him. We went in a few & nothing really took his fancy, & to be honest at the time I was thinking why sell the G40 for one??? Then he went off to Bournemouth to look at a G60 without me & bought it. When he arrived back I went over for a look & I was just in love with it. A year passed & I was looking to get something that wouldn't cost so much to run as my turbo (at the time running about 16mpg around town  ) My mate then told me he was going to be selling soon as he could now afford to get himself a really nice vr6 Storm and he'd wanted one since he was young. I jumped at the chance to have it 8)

I first saw a corrado when it first was introduced. I did'nt know too much about cars then, and was only a school boy then. However the first time I saw the corrado, I just fell in love with it, and thought that one day I will own one. The years went bu and everytime I saw a corrado on the road I would just go insane. Last year I deicided to buy a car, it was a choice between a Corrado or a Audi Coupe, it did'nt take me long to make the decision. When I looked up the corrado in Autotrader and saw a 2.0 L 16 valver. I couldnt afford a VR6 to buy or run so ended up getting the 2.0L 16v.

Every time I drive the car I just get this big grin on my face, then handling is phenomenal. But the one thing that really tops it off has got to be the exclusivity of driving one. The looks that the car pulls makes you proud to be the owner of a rare car.

I've spent a lot of money on it, (not as much as a lot of your here!!), and just can't bear to let go of the car. Rationale woudl dictate that I should sell it and get another affordable car but, the corrado has an allure to it that really is hard to resist!! I'm lucky that my fiance loves the car too and would hate it for me to get rid of it, she understands my passion for it.

I have noticed in the past year though that the interest in the Corrado is increasing and a lot of people would want one, I'm content now with owning a peace of history.

Sanj.

Started off in my mum's polo while I was living at home. Good little run about, and as I was the first to pass out of my mates it really did get run about! Then went through a stage of 'borrowing' my brothers 8v mk2 for a year or so before buggering off to uni where a car just didn't make sense.

I then went on a placement year and finally got to spend the 3 grand I'd been saving for years on a 1.8 16v corrado. It had done loads of miles, burn't loads of oil but did not car a bit! I was then on the forum one day when Leew mentioned he was elling his G60. So I harassed till he sold it me! I then flogged my 16valve on here in just a day! Not looked back after getting the G60, cost me a bit more than the 16v, but with these things spending a bit more usually Pays off!

My first encounter with a Corrado was is 1989, I had just been to the Comedy Store in Lester Square with a couple of mates, we were walking through a really crowded area on our way to catch the night bus home.....then the crowd kind of split and this LHD nugget yellow G60 appeared, jaw dropped to the ground and have been hooked ever since.

It wasn't until 1995 that I was able to buy my first Corrado, it was an early 91 black G60 with 100000 miles on it. Seem to remember paying around around 6.5k for it, which was very cheap then seeing as it was only 4/5 years old. Unfortunately my driving license already had 6 points on it due to a couple of silly speeding offences in my Scirocco Storm. Then I got caught doing 109 on the M4 in the company diesel Astra (oh the shame of it!) which gave me a 6 month ban and the C had to go. I only had that one for 6 months in all.

Various cars later, a bit of a cleaner license and no girlfriend to worry about, I went in search of my next Corrado in 1998. I found this one in a very strange manner. Had been looking in all the usual places for a few weeks but nothing had taken my fancy, went away for the weekend with a couple of friends and a couple of other people on a nice 40' yacht across to the Isle of Wright. One of the other people I didn't know was an older chap, say late 40's early 50's, right old character and was known as geezer by everyone. Anyway got talking and he suddenly got on to the subject of cars and started spouting on about this car he had for sale..... It was a Corrado, LHD, Aircon, strange interior.........interesting very interesting, also bizarre i'm thinking to myself to be sat on the back of a Yacht talking to a stranger that has a Corrado for sale and i'm looking for one. It turns out that this guy would go out to Germany every year and bring back a big American Trans am or something like that and then resell it in the UK, apparently making a tidy profit. The last year he had gone out he couldn't find any American rubbish, but found this little Corrado instead and bought that home. Next day he shows me the car and its like no Corrado I have ever seen before, well on the inside anyway. Lovely Dark Violet Pearl on the outside, black cloth seats....but then the strange bits, purple stitching on the seats and this purple ribbed plastic material on the back of the seats and the door card inserts. Was a little taken back at first but warmed to it in the end. A deal was struck and it was mine.

First of all I wanted to know what all this purple stuff was all about inside the car. After much research on the internet I found out that my C was a special edition called the Jet, I believe only sold in Germany. Many hours of subtle modding later we cruised the streets for around 2.5 years with the reg G60 GO. During this time I also became membership secretary of the CCGB and also started the Corrado-UK E/Yahoo group. Unfortunately due to redundancy I had to sell the C. I'm sure a lot of you will know the current owner Nigel Brookes (yep same surname, no relation, aka G60JET).

So to chapter 3, I'm currently looking for my next Corrado.

Edit: Added pics of G60 GO at Gti International in 2001

Then i was i gonne buy a GTI but i thought i fancied something else from those crazy germans, so i thought id get a rad. First one i went to see was the one i own, bloody love the damn thing, the looks ye get on the street the way it sits so bloody mean, its just a hard car, even after all the grief its given me i still love it to bits. First car was a Mk2 1.3 in 96, year later I bought an 8v GTI, 2 years later a Polo 16v which I traded for a Corrado 8v. It was the amount of people that didnt know what it was plus my dad, gran, mum... that said they really liked it that convinced me it was a wee bit special. 8v was slow as feck so I bought a 91 G60 which was traded for a Mk3 VR a year later. It made way for my 91 8v Golf which has been brilliant but I was still hankering after another Corrado. Two weeks ago I saw my 90 16v for sale so I just went and bought it.

First saw the C on top gear years ago and was mesmerised by the whole "and the spoiler raises up at 70 but it is being changed to 50 when it is realised in england......" and so on.

I have always wanted one since.

I test drove a couple of dogs and, not knowing much about cars, I forked out a bit of cash on AA tests on them. Thankfully the 3rd!!!! C I had an AA test on turned up trumps. I rung up and negotiated a price. Jumped on a train down to london. (thats right i bought it without seeing it  ) Then sped all the way back to leeds grinning all the way.

It drives like a dream and I cant wait to refurb the wheels and get the new rubber on it this summer.

Well, it’s kind of a long one, but I'll try to be as breif as I can!

I always wanted a corrado Vr6, even like 7 years ago when they were about £13K. even today, I’d never spend that much on a base car, so I bought a mk2 Golf GTI instead. Over the years the car gradually ended up with a 2.8 VR6 setup, which lastest a year, before being changed to a 2.9 lump. A corrado dash and clocks also ended up the car, as did early corrado seats.. So, in a round about sort of way I almost had a corrado, but not quite.

Anyway, I blew the gearbox up at York Dragway 2.5 years ago. Took the car off the road for that and to repaint the engine bay. Got a bit carried away and converted it to 4wd! Anyway, I got a bit sick of the this shell, it needed new paint all round, and I was loathed to pay another bodyshop. I was missing out on the shows in the meantime so I bought a ratty old mk2 shell for £80 and another 2.9 engine and threw it all together for a bit of fun. Ran that for 6 months, and ended up getting banned! During this time I was pretty down, and lost heart with the first mk2 and even tried to sell it. I was going to chop it up at one point. Somehow, I still kept it, but decided that a reshell was the way forwards…but not another mk2, this time I’d go for a corrado.

It had to have all the late panels, but be straight, the right colour, and not in need of paint. And £2000 was my budget. After realising there was no way I was going to get one for £2K I had to stretch to £3000. this excluded all but the rattiest of VR6’s, and G60’s, so I decided to go look for an 8v. I found a green one in Peterborough, travelled down to look at that, but it turned out to be a dog, and the rear quarter was full of filler, looked at it for about 20 seconds…….the only other one that came up was a Dark burgundy pearl one with 68K on the clock, but it was £3500 and in Cardiff. This colour was WAY up on my list, so I got in touch with the guy and he emailed me a few pics. It was just what I was after. So I rang him and we talked about me coming down to see it. He was OK to wait a while until I could come down. Then, a few days later he rang me saying a dealer wanted to come and look at the car tomorrow, so I said “well I’ll have to come down today then!” so I went home, got my cash, and jumped on the first train to Cardiff! Luckily I know a few lads from Wales, one of them picked me up from the station 5 hours later and took me to the guys house. Unfortunately it was dark by then, so I couldn’t really see the colour that well, but I was satisfied that it was straight, and I still need to get home! We agreed on £3100 and I drove home a happy man.

I was gutted the next day when I realised the glass sunroff was NOT a passat item but actually an aftermarket one!! I nearly sold the car!! But I convinced myself it was nicely fitted and not a cheap bit of kit but actually about £800 worth and fitted before the car was even registered!

Anyway, that was back in September. I’ve since fitted all the stuff in my sig to the car, hoping to finally drive it in a week or so.
