Subframe part identification

Hi All,

 

Just looking for a bit of advise, what exactly is the circled part on the subframe below:

In the process of taking the subframe off to be powder coated and also replace the steering rack.

 

Just wondering if whilst the subframe is off to neaten the appearance up a bit i can chop it off :bonk:

 

Am running a 20vt engine currently.

Its a balance weight and i think people do remove it, Doesn't even feature on the VR6

I suspected it would be a balance weight of some variety, i didn't want to go and remove it and it some how mess up the balance. like balancing a wheel etc.

On further googling with the keyword 'balance weight', it would appear that its a weight thats designed to calm the vibrations from the engine passing in to the car. one user reports no difference after removing it and even goes as far as saying its an easy way to reduce the weight of your car by 2-3kg... think ill get the angle grinder out :D
