To change sump (or sump gasket)
- support car on axle stands / lift etc
- drain oil and refit sump plug
- Leave filter change till end to keep things less messy!
- loosen each 10mm bolt in turn using the flexible extension for the ones at the gearbox end
- remove all bolts and support sump
- loosen sump and remove, note how it goes round pas pipes / brackets to help refit
- remove gasket and clean gasket face on bottom of block / and sump if refiiting
- If refitting sump also clean and check for debris - any orange plastic in there is from broken dipstick guide tube
Fitting Windage tray / Removing Oil Pump
- if fitting windage tray you will need to remove oil pump (2 x 13mm bolts - the 2 smaller 10mm ones are for the pump housing)
- Withdraw pump and empty oil, clean pickup mesh
- remove plastic windage piece if fitted
- turn pump - will feel notchy with no oil, fill up and place in pan of fresh oil
- submerge pickup and turn shaft, oil will rise and notchyness should go
- Any doubt then remove pump cover and check for axial play with feeler gauges as per Haynes / Bentley manual or replace unit
- If replacing pump, fit pickup line and fill with new oil as above to prime unit
- lightly oil new sump gasket / edge of tray
- Locate windage tray and fit pump back into place locating shaft and making sure it's correctly seated before bolting back up
Replacing Sump Pan
- Take parts sticker off windage tray / sump and check they are free from swarf
- Oil gasket and offer up new pan, gearbox end first and manauvering around PAS pipe work etc, Shrick item is slightly trickier to locate
- When in place try and get a bolt in using a screwdriver to move gasket into place
- Get a few bolts started arounds the sump and get them all in and treaded before tightening
- go round each bolt and do up as tight as posible with one hand using a screw driver (i.e. no torque)
- Either use a torque wrench set at 20Nm or go round a second time by hand tightening up
- Check new sump plug is tight / replace copper washer if needed
Finishing off
- Complete oil change by removing filter
- Prime new filter, replace and fill engine
- Check level with car back on ground
- Shrick sump holds about 1/2 litre more than standard
- Turn engine by hand once or twice if pump has been removed
- Start engine and turn off immediatly to prevent air locks
- restart and check for leaks watching carefully as it reaches running temp
- switch off and later check oil level and top up
