  1. I'm putting my VR back on the market shortly and was wondering whether to leave the original 15' speedlines on or put back on my Wolfrace 17's. I know big rims aren't to everyone's taste so might narrow down market a bit but the tyres on the 17s are pretty new whereas the Speedlines are flaking a bit round the edge and the tyres are coming up for renewal. The set not in use I guess I could flog on Ebay though I probably won't get that much for the originals.

    stashed!

bag o' charlie?! my find seems suddenly outclassed dam

    stashed!

LOL -rumbled with the avatar! I have destroyed the incriminating evidence (no prizes for guessing how). Yes the car feels dirty now - it needs to be cleaned inside and out. Go and get cloth and screwdriver - time for a spring clean! PS a burgundy rado went past behind as i was messing around with it. Any takers?!
  4. Took apart the dash yesterday to try to sort the heater control and found prev buyer's (he'll remain nameless) 'emergency survival kit'. Let's just say it was long, thin and white (no, not a tampon). Have sudden desire to strip it. Anyone had similar experience?!
  5. yep count me in too. lovely crack on one of mine
  6. I'm pondering same except I have only one set and they're firmly in use. Selling in a few months time and not sure whether to recondition or not. They're seriously tatty. So what about the value of the whole car (v good nick otherwise) with new shiners 8) ? Would i get my money back? I've seen a whole range of quotes for the work.

    funny noise!

seems to be on any reversing manoevure, not just when on full lock. Cheers for this - I'll take a look at the pads then.

    funny noise!

I've started noticing a slight groaning sort of noise when I'm rolling back slowly in reverse during a 3 point turn. I've not had this before and I'm not sure what might be causing it. Anyone else experienced this?
  9. cheers guys - a very quick and resounding thumbs down for Radweld then. Someone has offered to solder it for me but I can't see that being any better and they want me to bring it to 'em. New rad it is then. Quote breaks down at £140 for the part plus an hour's labour. Stealers of course want more.
  10. Anyone have any advice re leaking radiators? My coolant leak has been traced to a hole in the radiator when pressure tested. Having spent a fortune getting car up to date I only want to replace it if this really is the only option (quoted £200 fitted). What about Radweld? Or something similar? I don't want to compromise any part of the cooling system if it's not up to the job.
  11. Been quoted 140 pounds + 50 for labour. Is this a part worth trying to get cheaper online, or is that standard price? As a new Corrado owner I have no experience of shopping around for parts, and I have no idea at this stage about part numbers/ different types etc suffice to say that I don't have air -con. Any advice appreciated
  12. so how did Bar-Tech measure up with your servicing last year Kevvv? looks like it's a toss up between that locally or a day trip to Stealth. Anyone know how cheap Stealth are? They certainly sound knowledgeable but I've never driven so far for a service. Not sure whether to trust a VR to a non-performance specialist maybe i'll get my minor coolant leak fixed locally so i can chance a long drive to Coventry! Dinkus - cheers for thread.
  13. ok cheers for those, not quite close enough, have posted under gen car chat just in case
  14. aha! Looks like a pipe just behind the rad. Cheapo to fix I reckon. Thanks for the tips. no the car doesn't have A/C. shame at this time of year.
  15. Can anyone recommend a good specialist near Cambridge? (south Cambs/ N Essex region)? Just for basic servicing and quality repairs. Anyone who's honest and not too pricey would go down a treat. Could be a good thread to go with the others below.
  16. no plans to modify it, no. It'll be a steep learning curve for me as I know bugger all about engines (though I did get it checked out) but hopefully this doesn't preclude me from appreciating style and owning a part of motoring history! First lesson came this morning (5th day)... coolant level has plummeted and warning light is flashing. Didn't have time to look at it as have had to come straight in to work (in a borrowed 1.1!). Will poke around tonight but still need to find a specialist round here... Anyone help? I'll have a dig around on the 'engine bay' forum.
  17. Maybe Dinkus will recommend a good specialist. Does he want a Golf VR6 or a Corrado? I paid £6.5K but that includes original wheels and a private plate worth £700. It's done 86K which I suppose is average for that age. i noticed on another post someone laughing about how a G60 was advertised with a Karmann interior - now i understand  I need it to get to work unfortunately, so it'll be out every day, but I want to look after it, so there'll be mercy from my right foot - not gonna thrash it - it's an investment! But I WILL enjoy it
  18. Just wanna say thanks to anyone who helped me out answering Q’s regarding buying a VR6  . I’m now the proud owner of a stunning ’96 silver with mint bodywork, Karmann leather and 17” alloys. Watch out for it in the Cambridge area and give me a toot if yer passing. 8) Have never owned one of these (but enjoying it already) and still need a bit of help. Eg can anyone recommend a good specialist in my area? I’d be prepared to travel slightly further afield to find someone who’s knowledgeable, honest and not too pricey. And I’m not sure yet which oil to go for or which tyres are best (might go for the current P7000s).
  19. ok point taken... I can justify the extra running costs yeah, but wouldn't want a bill that's more than the car's value. The reason a lot of these get scrapped (as far as i can tell) is cos' people don't have the funds for a big repair job like a new engine. It's easy to say fix it, but with what...? I won't let it put me off buying though, just want to make the right choice and i'm totally new to all this. or maybe I am too nervous. Maybe i'll just get that 45bhp micra.
  20. I'm currently looking at some C VR6s and I'm worried about the number which have had complete new engine/ rebuilds. This seems to be about the mostly costly replacement there is, normally running into several thousand pounds  , as opposed to just one part which might be a few hundred. Thought about getting a warranty but there is a maximum claim for such an old car which is usually about a grand i think. Is it worth getting a car of this age with a newer engine? I guess the first thing I'd need to know is whether it is new or reconditioned. Has anyone had good or bad luck with such a purchase? Such a car has probably been thrashed so are there other bits which might be on the way out :?:
  21. Anyone got any thoughts on a VR6 automatic? I've never driven any sort of auto in my life but have my eye on one which looks pretty good. Interested in knowing how the performance compares to a manual and how much less the car would be worth. I know it won't quite stand up to (or keep up with) a manual but if there's not too much of a difference maybe i could live with it :?: or not? or does it just take the fun out of driving?? :?
  22. now that's something I hadn't thought about. Black model looked coool though 8) . Cheap as chips too but a bit boy racer-ish with big alloys and a bass box where the boot used to be. Who bought a separate warranty with their VR6? They seem to be a bit specific to me, but I guess on an old car they can save you a fortune if you're unlucky with your choice. Adds cost though especially if I get an RAC inspection too. I guess the best-looked-after examples will be from forum members; Bobbywhacker might get a visit from me :)
  23. cheers guys and well done Rick for hammering the final nail in the Type-R coffin. I have to take advice from someone who's had both. 8) I drove a VR6 last night and have to agree it was a top car, which is a big relief and I'm off to try out another tonight and another tomorrow. Yeah, 5K in 3 years would be steep but last night's car (now on 157K) had a whole new engine at 115K at a cost of more than 6 grand! That scared me sh*tless :( into almost buying it, in case same goes on another. I never did ask what had happened to it. It was a nice car, smart alloys with a couple of small dings in the bodywork, dodgy sun roof (was expecting that) and a small patch of rust by the wheel arch. Things looked OK under the bonnet but I'm no mechanic; there were a couple of small modifications (KN filter etc). So should i hold out for a better model? Storms seem to be hard to come by I've noticed :?:
  24. Hi Thinking of getting a VR6 and no doubt most on here will agree this is a sound choice, but I'm wondering about running costs (esp as it will be c10 yrs old). Had been thinking of a '01 Civic Type-R before. Obviously newer so cheaper to run?? not sure. What about mods then? General advice seems to be to avoid them when buying. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? (obviously they might put the insurance up a bit for a start). Well done with the buyer's guide! Any other tips?
