  1. well i noticed smoking coming out of the bonnet so pulled over and noticed something wasnt right so called AA out straight away, so i havent driven it whilst is been broke. just rang VW, the said the pully does not come with the tensioner, it works out about £40 for pully and £50 for tensioner and then £40 for belt, think ill be going elseware as cant afford that at all.

and vagcat doesnt work no more so i cant check :mad2:

-update- just rang gsf, they have one in stock, £57 :) forgot belt so ringing back up now, doh lol.

    £53 here: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id=574

I only ever heard of them coming as one complete unit!

  2. Hi

thanks for the advice, my corrado has a VR6 Engine will the front mount be a easy job (I just need to replace the metal cup that fits the mount and not the mount itself). Is it possible to drive it to the garage with this problem. :)

Front mount is dead easy, support engine on jack and replace. Cheap from GSF too.

Don't drive hard or far - some VR6s have a "reverse" dent in the bonnet where the engine hits the inside from having a broken front mount!

Should notice an improvement in gearchange and smoothness when you replace them.

  3. he said it had a mis-fire but it also had a loud knocking from the top end( not the rattle from the chains either)

I had an injector stick open causing a missfire on one of my VR6s. The engine made a loud knocking noise as you describe (must have been the petrol causing bore wash and causing piston slap? it was a pretty scary noise to be honest and I thought the worst).

Once I replaced the injector it was as smooth as silk!

  4.

Secondly I recently viewed this Corrado in Liverpool and learnt that I should ask more questions before going to look.

    Good Points:

    Engine bay looked decent

    No timing chain rattle

Seller honestly answered all questions when I was there (shame he didn't mention the following in the ad or on the phone)

    Bad points:

Huge gouge down to the metal along the NS door which is also dented in for at least half it's length

Missing paint and rust on NSR arch

Inverted dent in the bonnet as though it was slammed shut on something

    Front bumper needs respray

    Cracked grille

    Cracked rear numberplate surround

    Window rubbers coming away

    ABS light stayed on

Heard a clunk from gearbox when restarting the engine!

To be honest it was immediately apparent that this car needed plenty of work so I didn't check the rest of the car over that thoroughly but I hope that gives an idea of what to expect if you're considering taking a look at this one.

    Cheers,

    Mik

a wee bit of Corrado history that one

times and owners haven't been kind for that one :(

robbed of its black leather recaro interior and replaced with an early cloth interior

This is my old car!!!!!! - I bought in Oct 07 and sold feb 09. I did a lot of work to it (mainly suspension and niggles) and the PO to me did lots of engine work (replaced chains and tensioner etc). It just needed cosmetically tidying a bit when I sold it.

PM me for more if anyone is interested in buying it.

  5. Solved the vibration problem, it was the Gearbox mount, its supposed to be a 1yr old VT mount but it was shot when I got it out, flapping arround with moderate hand pressure. Bizarre, now.....must fit that new main water pump but perhaps not in this snow! Cheers Chaps.

Great news! Don't talk to me about water pumps. Just make sure the one you are putting in is a genuine one. I got the change down to 50 minutes after doing it 3 times within a couple of months due to pattern parts.

  6. I have been toying with the idea of chopping my blackberry 94 VR6 in the scrappage scheme, but this thread is making me think it may be better to sell it. Any ideas what it is realistically worth? It's done 144,000 and had the chains, tensioners, head, clutch done at 140,000. It has lots of history, heated leather and aircon. Everything works and it has the usual koni/H&R suspension setup which was done the same time as front wishbones and bushes 18 months ago and the heater matrix about 8 months before that. It also has 288mm brakes and a Miltech exhaust & std speedline wheels. It's my daily driver for the last 3 years and has never broken down (now I'm asking for trouble).

It sounds great, but it has 2 issues - since the clutch was done the take up is very jerky/snatchy (though gear change is fine) and the paint work is crap (not rusty) so it needs a respray. Oh - I just remembered there is a bad chip in the windscreen as well.

What could I realistically get for it? I see lots of different asking prices banded around, but I have no idea what they are actually going for. Is it worth more that the magic £2k?

Thats sounds great and would easily that would get £1500-2k! Then you can walk into the dealership and get a straight sale on a new car.

The scrappage scheme isn't all its cracked up to be. My father went into a Land Rover dealer after a new Freelander 2, list 22k in the spec /options he wanted. He gets them down to 19k.

He then said "righto another grand off for my scrappage car". The dealer shook their head and said scrappage scheme is 2k off full list - so same car would be 20k with scrappage and 19k with no scrappage.

Nuts, just proves car dealers prefer the easy life and will still give a better deal on a straight sale.

  7. I had a wobbly gear stick on my last Corrado and it was the bolt that secures the cable end to the selector on top of the gearbox (with the shift weight on it).

The weight was waggling around - just needed tightening.

  8. Buy at £1500 with decent MOT, fit new suspension bushes all round, new dampers and engine mounts, new fuel filter, full service and bleed new fluid through the brakes. A tank of V-power and it should drive like new then and better than a £3000 car.

If you can get that lot done for £1500 I'd be very surprised.

Lol so would I unless you can do it all yourself. Thats what I did with my last C and would do with the next. Unless I saw one for sale that had already had it all done recently :)

Yes you could just buy a TT  - but its just not the same, not as special as a Corrado. Yes it drives better and is much more comfortable and safer, but its just a little dull.

My head still snaps round whenever I see a Corrado, I will get another VR6 sometime...

  9. The cars going to be tired at this age at any price.

Buy at £1500 with decent MOT, fit new suspension bushes all round, new dampers and engine mounts, new fuel filter, full service and bleed new fluid through the brakes. A tank of V-power and it should drive like new then and better than a £3000 car.

Then buy all the annoying missing little bits of trim and nicer seats off here :)

  10. Best to fit new ones - if you refit the old ones its pretty likely they will fall off again after a few months (happened to me) and then you have to take the hub apart again to fit new ones.

  11. I went from a Corrado Vr6 to an Audi TT 225 Coupe.

Not as practical as a corrado (useless rear seat and boot space), but faster and much more comfortable.

Handling is very good but can be improved with the addition of defcon front wishbone upgrade bushes.

    30ie00l.jpg

Now if only i could get the damn oil pressure warning to stop going off all the time when the pressure is fine :mad2:

  12. After much investigation it turns out my distributor’s shot. It took so long to diagnose because the symptoms (no mid range grunt) are unusual. It’s obsolete from VAG now but I’m getting my old one rebuilt here for £100 +vat with a 3yr warranty:

    http://www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk/index.aspx

    How did you diagnose that!

Is it the hall sensor in the dizzy thats gone? I hear they cause lots of funny problems with G60s

  13. £13 bought :(

Not all doom - thats a decent price. Stick an ad up on club gti, I think the early ones are a bit rarer than the late ones so you may make a few £.

Or you could get a puller and remove the spline adapter - very difficult, but means you can use it.

  14. i live in lancaster but willing to travel if its gonna be worth it

I saw you this morning :D You were heading into Lancaster on the A6 just after the Texaco garage. I came past in a blue TT coupe. Car is looking good! 8)

First time I've ever seen a fellow forum users car! Shame I don't have my VR6 anymore.

Awesome GTI also has a good rep down in Manchester, but I've never used them.

  15. I did only say that the rarity on the road was a part of it. Not the be all and end all. But in some ways you reinforce my point as I'd say, arguably, that those cars probably do have more soul. Old cars just do! So you can keep the derisive 's to yourself.

Yeah I agree entirely. The fact that people say, ooh not seen one of those for a while or thats in great condition and they love the corrado makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. On the flip side someone has keyed my TT already so people like that too but it obviousy raises very different emotions!

It is nice however to ring a dealer and ask for a part and it is already in stock  and not be told that its on order from germany never to appear or its discontinued and have to spend an hour trawling the internet looking for one :D

  16. I'm in Lancaster too and theres nowhere I know of.

Theres an aircooled specialist in morecambe who say they do watercooled, but I've never used them.

The G60 is a rare beast, seems to scare a lot of mechanics off.

  17. I've gone from a standard 120k VR6 corrado (had 2 of them) to a standard 90k TT 225 coupe.

The difference is quite remarkable. The TT is more stiffly sprung than the corrado so has less lean in the corners, however conversely the TT also rides over rough roads much better than the Corrado ever did (must be in the damping). The TT rattles and clunck a hell of a lot less.

The TT handles better when pushing on, much less understeer and you can get on the power earlier without the front wheels losing grip (prob due to quattro). The TT is a bit quicker, and much more comfortable on the motorway. The mod cons are better (climate control, air con, heated leather fantastic) and the interior is a few notches above the C in quality.

Theres not so much feedback through the wheel - the steering is a little numb on the TT, not as sharp as the C, is does seem to need sharpening up some - maybe the DEFCON mod will help here. The TT feels better balanced - the C Vr6 did feel a bit front heavy in comparison.

IMHO a standard TT is a better sports car and a better cruiser than the standard C VR6. However theres not as much room inside, its nowhere near as practical. It doesn't make a very interesting noise, doesn't get you excited like the VR6 does. Also the TT is not as good looking (IMO). The TT is not hard to work on really and theres loads of help and how-tos on the engine on the internet. Parts are a bit more expensive for the TT and there is more of them to go wrong!
