    Red stuff pads..

    Green stuff pads warped new VAG disc inside 12 months. Wouldn't use them again with standard discs. Now have new standard discs & pads, which are far better at stopping quickly on my daily commute. On the track again at the end of July to see how they fare. I bet the hoses/brake fluid will overheat first. Duncan
  2. I have a colleague with an Audi A3 1.8T and that has an amplified subwoofer on the left hand side of the boot just behind the wheel arch. Has anyone considered using one of these? PS. I posted the original message on this thread and to update you, I've fitted JBL 4x6" plate speakers (sep tweeter & 4" mid on one plate) in the back and a small amp (fitted on the far left of the boot) powering the front MB Quarts 5.25" components. The bass & volume from the 5.25" speakers is massively improved. I'll try and post some pics. Thanks for all the help,
  3. The team at GTI International 2003 recorded me managing 0-60 in 5.99 secs. I needed a new clutch the following day. I questioned the accuracy on the day, but they said that the laser gun doesn't lie. Standard VR6 with about 100ml of fuel on board.
  4. I thought that this was quite a lengthy job (4-5hrs), and that it is quite likely that the rear brake valve will be broken in the process. The part prices are (Prices are for one and all +VAT) R/Axle Bushes x2 1H0 501 541 A 24.38 (VAG) or 17.50 (GPC) R/Brake Valve x1 1H0 612 151 C 99.75 (VAG) or 82.00 (GPC) How long have you been charged for the job? And were there any problems removing the rear brake valve? Thanks, Duncan
  5. No. The MB Quarts are reasonable quality components. The woofer is in the door and the separate tweeters are mounted in the dash. The main problem is lack of power from a suitable amp. This and some new rear MB Quart (IF I CAN FIND ANYWHERE THAT STOCK 6x4 MB QUARTS) speakers will be my next investment. Regards, Duncan

Tweeter: ¾" (19mm) Titanium dome Woofer: 5¼" (130mm) Polypropylene Cone Crossover: 12 dB/Octave @ 4000Hz Impedance: 4 Ohms (nominal) Freq. Response: 55Hz to 32,000Hz Power Range: 35watts (rms.) to 90watts Sensitivity: 84dB (1 watt, 1 meter) Any recommends for a 4 channel amp to drive these and some ~£60 rear 6x4"? Cheers, Duncan
  7. Since getting a Miltek exhaust :) , the lack of bass from the standard size speakers more noticeable, and I'm planning on improving the set-up. I currently have: A Sony minidisc headunit (on the front it quotes 35W x 4) & 10 Disc CD in the boot (Mounted under the left speaker shelf) MB Quart components at the front - DSD213 13 CM 2 Way, Discus Range 5.25 in the standard doors fittings & Tweeters with X-overs in the standard dash mounts Original Nokia rear speakers - Nasty Proposed Changes: Replace rear speakers with JBL/Infinity or similar ie. JBL GTO6425e ~£50 Add a sealed subwoofer box on the left of the boot. Self build from 20mm MDF + possibly fibreglass (I read the post on this discussion) ~15-20 litres volume with an 8" or 10" subwoofer (Less than ideal, but better than nothing) An amp under the passenger seat for the sub I would also consider buying a 4 channel amp, to boost the MB Quarts at the front and bridge the other two channels for the subwoofer. I just aim to have a system which will recreate balanced sound when driving, rather than blowing the neighbours away! Has anyone else got a similar setup to my proposed system?     New clutch - Judder

    Thanks for the reply, that makes a lot of sense. The clutch judder is better now than at first, but if you try to creep along in a traffic jam by just lifting the clutch the judder is very noticeable, not smooth at all. My mechanic had a job to fit it too. He ended up taking out half the front end, including the sub frame I think, in order to get the gearbox out of the way. I'm still hopeful the clutch will eventually wear so that the judder will be less. Might just take a year or two! Thanks again, Duncan
  9. I've had a new VW clutch fitted by my local trustworthy garage, but when slipping the clutch in traffic it judders the steering wheel. My mechanic thinks it will bed-in over time. Has anyone else had this experience from a new clutch? I'm also thinking I should have had the master and slave clutch cylinders replaced at the same time, as now the clutch pedal doesn't always travel the last ~1 inch to be in-line with the brake pedal.   10. Just for the record, this is the reply from HS Sports timing, who ran the timing equipment during the weekend. I believe that my time for 5.99 0-60 and 6.18 0-60 are real. It did cost me my clutch! Regards, Duncan Standard VR6 with miltek and broken clutch, still. Duncan, Regarding your enquiry for the equipment/system used. All of the information is collaborated onto a central machine. The sprint time is started by a Radio beam system, which when crossed starts the timer. The 0-60 time is then the time taken to reach 60MPH, and the speed taken from a calibrated Speed Radar Gun as used by the police. The Quarter mile time is the taken from a finish beam at the quarter mile point. There were no system problems over the weekend that would affect the times given to competitors, although a few times because of the helicopter flying above the strip, the radar would pick the speed of that up instead of a car and cause a "Spike" on the graph. The only other factor which happened once over the weekend is exhaust tones can effect the speed gun, i.e. a loud popping exhaust will just "spike" the speed gun straight up to 60 MPH.     I much prefer the days when they were at TRL. The tyre test circuit was the worst yet. The TRL layout was much bigger. Still, it was the first time I had to race my new VR6 down the 0.25 mile. Last year I still had my old 16V. The result of the first run is attached. 5.99 0-60mph. The second run was ~0.18 sec slower, and I now need a new clutch! Managed to get home, but the next day it was slipping very badly. Regards, Duncan Standard VR6 with Miltek exhaust. (And broken clutch)
