  1. Cheers guys, its going into Grant motorsport so he can have a look it. He will carry out a oil pressure test first and go from there, think thats my bet bet! Cheers.
  2. Thanks sorry forgot to give info on the car, its a '93 k reg with 140k, limited history unfortunately and no records of the chains being done. Could it be the oil pump? thanks
  3. Hey guys, I have searched through recent posts in the hope of gathering info regarding my problem. Whilst out driving on friday night and driving my VR like it was intended i realised there was a louder noise coming from the engine. Firstly before the new noise my chains were always slightly rattly and this never worried me! However whilst building up the revs suddenly it sounded like the chains were extremely loud. I limped the car over lifted the bonnet and it sounded almost as if the chains had become instantly louder. I had to start and move the car on the weekend and it starts and runs fine once the revs have settled (rattly when revs are high tho) and when i moved it around without touching the accelerator it was fine however once the revs reach 1000rpm or so the extrememly loud noise begins to come back. Im no mechanic however when i popped the bonnet and the revs were held at 2k it sounded as if the noise was coming from under the timing chain cover (or could this just be the top of the engine?? cams etc..?) Ive read posts and people have suggested oil pumps to fix a rattly noise and on the other hand Ive read post wher people describe that the chains are screwed when they start rattling at 1200rpm... Can anyone shed any light? Many thanks fred.
  4. Cheers guys things are starting to becoming a little clearer. Will get the seal from vw. Am i correct in thinking that once the CP is removed the 3 bolts will be obvious and if so is the thermostat housing removed in one with the housing that holds the 3 temp senders? Many thanks again guys... Fred.
  5. Oh if i remove the whole housing from the head do I have to change the seal thats in there? All I was given from GSF was a thermostat and a single o-ring so dont want to be removing things if when I fit them back together they'll start leaking! lol. Can anyone advise? Anyone got any piccys as to which bolts to remove to change the thermostat easiest? thanks again Fred.
  6. Sorry just re-read your previous threads do you remove the thermostat housing from the block? i was trying to remove the bolts on the lower plastic underneath the thermostat. :?
  7. Hi guys gone about replacing the thermostat. Have removed upper and lower rad coolant pipes to gain access however the bolts appear a pig to get at. I can see 2 and the 3rd is hiding somewhere. Are they 5mm allen bolts? If so what tool did you use to get in there? Am i doing something wrong? Many thanks Fred.
  8. Hi guys, replacing the thermostat in my VR6 tomorrow anything I should be aware of? Is it straight forward? many thanks Fred
  9. Asking on behalf of a mate who has a VR6 engine in his mk2 golf. He has purchased oil temp and pressure gauges and was wondering where they had to be wired up to? If anyone has any pictures that would be appreciated. Many thanks Fred.
  10. Ok i will try spraying the coil pack later! Ive also been by a mate with a mk2 VR to remove leads from the coil pack end 1 by 1 to find out which cylinder isnt firing, he then suggested taking the lead of the cyclinder that isnt firing and swapping it with one that is! Is this safe and effective? thanks Fred
  11. Ok cheers guys. Is it a possibility that water has affected the coilpack then? Just find it too co-incidental after a lot of water went over then engine. That test you carried out on the coilpack to check its effectiveness how do i do it? remove leads? Thanks
  12. Nah it has a coilpack. Are these expensive? Is it possible that water may have leaked in there? How would you recommend removing water if its sat aound the spark plugs? Would it help removing ht leads indivdually from the coilpack end indivdually to isolate which cyclinder isn't firing and go from there? Cheers
  13. Alright guys, another spot of trouble with the VR. Replaced the heater matrix on sat (in heavy rain) and the engine got extremely wet. Decided to flush coolant system whilst i was at it so a lot of water from that went over the engine too! I didnt think much of it until I drove it last nite, first couple of mins she drove fine but then occasionally started to misfire especially at low revs. Then after 5 mins or so was misfiring constantly and running on what sounds like 5 cyclinders. Drove 50 miles today and around 20 last nite and I hoped engine temperature would disperse any water that may be causing it to misfire but it hasn't, still misfiring. The car ran fine before the engine got soaked in water on sat prior to changing the matrix. Worring that I may have dropped a cyclinder checked the oil cap for mayo but its fine. Oil is clean and its not overheating. Can anyone suggest some tests to eliminate any possible problems. Cheers in advance Fred
  14. Yeh Ive joined the club also! lol
  15. Thats perfect! Thanks everso much I can go finish the nitemare job now! Fred.
  16. Right changed my heater matrix (which was an effort!!!) nearly done now. Just wondering in the engine bay which hose goes into which pipe? Ive supplied a pic can anyone confirm as to whether they are the correct way around or if they need to be swapped over?? (Im only asking as the AA came out and diverted it for me and therefore have no idea which one goes where! lol) Thanks Fred Is this correct?
  17. Ok thats cool. A mate and myself will be doing two sets over the winter when we get bored! lol. I will take some photos and write up some tips. Does anyone know a CHEAP place to get a GOOD quality kit? That might also offer discount if we buy 2 kits? Cheers Fred
  18. Hi yeh, took the door cards off. 90 pounds is alot for around 20 mins work. Its quite hard to describe how to do re-trimming how ever its easy in principle if that makes sense. If you can hang on 2 or 3 months I will be doing a whole interior re-trim on my VR and Il most probs take photos and write a guide however until I do mine I wouldn't like to say what needs doing to yours (don't want to give out the wrong advice and it doesn't look 100%). If you can hang on I will be able to inform you all... Up yo you? Fred.
  19. Cheers guy's, il have a look under the bonnet and see what condition its in. Thanks
  20. Just wondering, going about replacing thermostat on my '93 VR6. Do I have to change the housing aswell or can I get away with just replace thermostat and gasket? Many thanks Fred.
  21. OK thats good news. Oil temp on the motorway is around 96-100 degrees sat at 65mph. I will change the matrix and see how it goes from there... Surely it should sit at 90 degrees tho...? Thanks Fred
  22. Sorry guys that wasn't very clear! Its a VR6. The day I bought the car got it upto temperature then water leaked into the footwell at an alarming rate. Called out the AA and he said it could be the matrix. Have diverted the matrix and the car has run fine since however no heaters. Like I say the temperature is fine in traffic as the fans kick in (sits inbetween 90 - 100 degrees) however on the motorway she stays cool. I didnt think this would be related to the matrix as it doesn't influence coolant temp (or does it?) What else may it be and are there any checks I can do to carry this out? Thanks Fred.
  23. Hey guys, Looking at tackling my matrix this weekend. Been recommended fitting a genuine VW one as apparantly aftermarket ones are just a tempory fix. Has anyone had trouble with aftermarket ones (ie gsf etc..?)? Also Im assuming that beacuse the heater matrix has gone is that why when driving on the motorway it doesnt hit 90 degrees usually only reachs 75 degrees, however in traffic it sits inbetween 90 and 100 degrees. Is this anything other than the matrix? Many thanks Fred
  24. I used to trim interiors for Toyota and the principle in re-trimming door cards is extremely straight forward! I will be taking mine off this weekend so I will let you know whats involved! Fred.
  25. Hey guys, Looking of doing mine soon. Not that excited now I know its a pain of a job! I realised mine had gone when steaming hot water started dripping out of the dash and into the footwells (primarily drivers side). Am I right in thinking that its only the matrix that needs doing? Many thanks Fred.
