Haha, read the post below and sorted it, but the temp gauge is still dodgy, so I'm going to try a new set of clocks anyhow.... Max

So the source of all my problems with the temp gauge appear to have been down to one thing, dodgy clocks. Today my dash pod died, no rev counter, no fuel gauge. no mfa, no dash lights, nada. So, just to check, do I need a new pod, and if so, does anyone have one?! 1.8 16v by the way! CHEEEERS Max

Wiring help, pictures attatched!! 1.8 16valver... (again...!

yeah tried all that! need to see if I can get hold of a multi meter I guess, should probably learn to sort out this stuff myself because its all I ever seem to do with my VW's... Thought they were supposed to be reliable! my mechanic guy has an auto electrician buddy, so he's going hook me up with him, and hopefully will be the end of stupid little bits and she'll be 100%... :) max -

Strange little development, when I put differnt wires onto different sensors, they seem to have different effects on the temp gauge! It doesn't move whatever, but on one of them, once the engine is up to temperature, it will cause the temp gauge to flash constantly. So I put it on another, and now it comes on constantly but only if I have all my electrics on, plus it goes off again when I'm driving, then comes on after a while of standstill... The alternator tests out fine as well... Wierd ass car... -

ok, upon further testing, the needle won't move whatever I do... so shall I assume bad wiring? to be fair it has been intermittently working since buying the car, and has given unreliable readings the whole time... I think the sensors are definately working, because when I unplugged the isv one, the engine rev's dropped... so here is my next question, how do I go about fixing this..?! Cheers Max -

ah ok, so they are all temperature senders..? and I can literally just swap them around until it works..? surely this will affect something else no? sorry for being a spaz and not knowing bugger all about engines, far more complicated tham my old 1.3 mk1 golf i tell you..! max -

Come on, surely someone can tell me what wires do what..?! Max -
Ok, so the temperature gauge isn't working, but have been fiddling about with so many bloody sensors I'm lost, I can drive the car fine, it never overheats and the oil hasn't gone over 96 and that is when at a standstill. Attatched are pictures of what wires are connected where, I was wondering if anyone here could tell me what needs to go where? From standing looking into the engine bay this picture is from the right hand side of the engine, If you can't see, the top wire is a green / red, the one directly underneath is blue / white, and the one to the right is yellow. Next pic. This picture is from the front of the engine, on top of the oil filter? Nearest wire yellow, farthest wire blue, and the one loose at the front is blue and white. Thanks for any help, as although it's not overheating, it is quite un-nerving having no temperature gauge! Max

Title says it all... 95% there on the 'rado, the only thing bugging me is the temp gauge now not working... :? So thinking to rewire a chunk of the engine as a lot of the wires seem quite brittle. Cheers Max

No I've not seen it go barely over 110 pls it only gets that warm at standstill, under load normally it is at about 90 - 100 which is what i take to be normal right? The oil has never gone over about 92 either, I think the water tamp guage is actually reading hotter than it actually is though... Tried taking off the power steering belt and it still squeaked. Forgot to mention the temp guage isn't working now, just through fiddling the lead was taken off and snapped instantly, so the wire was stripped back and the connector put back on, but now it just doesn't work, so thinking to rewire the sensors, might make a difference to the temp readings... As title... So I guess the immediate respones is tighten your alternator belt etc... Well, tried that, then tried taking all possibly squeaking belts off the engine and guess what, it still squeaks also leads me to believe its not the alternator... It has a new cam belt and pulley, its not too tight or anything, but I'm still getting the drains in power including the disco style temperature warning light if i have all lights on and indicate or something! Someone please give me some ideas, got a whole day to work on it tomorrow with my mechanic guy, the only thing we've found down there so far was a bolt that had snapped of the tensioner, but surely that wouldn't be causing all that racket?! Also, this only happens once the engine is up to temperature not when it is cold, and it seems to affect the engine temperature/general electric power, like when I'm at standstill it heats right up and then I start getting the disco style warning light from the temp guage. Yet when I'm driving the temperature drops by like 20 degrees... almost like its being drained of power or something... the alternator seems to be giving out a correct voltage as well Cheers for any advice and I hope I gave enough info! I guess today was pretty darn hot so I'll just hope it was that, might get the head gasket done soon for peace of mind anyhow... Cheers for the reasurance, with things going wrong so far I've been aprehensive of keeping the bloody thing! Fortunately the bug has already bitten, and I can't see myself in another car for a long time..! Hehe :D Max

Also adding to the strange temperature anomalies I've had the last week, when I have my lights on, the temp warning light kind of flashes really intermittently... This does not happen on sidelights, or off... Now I am really confused..! Max
-
Its a 1.8 16v... Well I'll take a view on it over then next week, my main concern is the lack of starting at the minute... rubbish Max
-
Yeah thats the thing, it just kind of holds the temperature there, fan kicks in as it should and just holds the temp that high... Starter motor seems to have gone to top it off... Not having much luck so far... :( Max
