  1. All sorted. Most the problem was part of the mechanism at the bottom wouldn't spring back - note - doing bottom allen key too tight also causes this. Top part was bent and got it back as close as can be but obvs wear... Took a few attempts refitting but now perfect
  2. Oh... handles fine, i pulled the pump out for now. No battery anyway, this is early stages of getting the old girl running again... Off the road for ten years since gearbox went, ran it and moved it till battery died and both handles broke - not moved for 5 yrs so a lot of work ahead if i get time...
  3. I’ll see how it goes when i put it back together, i’d say i probably bent it struggling to get it apart, was refusing to release so i got a bit heavy handed...
  4. Not my first time changing the striker, several before this. Cars sadly been off the road for years, def the hardest to replace this time as the lock pop-up knob part was seized, 3 hrs just to get the door open! Striker bit was easy, took the lock mechanism out as well and all the bars attached to lube etc. Has anyone had issues with the mechanism being bent and not lining up with the handle mechanism? The knob lock part has barely any movement as its fouling in the mechanism - this is by hand now, not refitted it yet...

Now it's sounds like i ragged the hell out of it all the time which is far from the truth, i ran it hard sometimes but i looked after it damn well and spent tens of thousands on it over the years. karman cloth interior in good condition, sorry no leather. Bad bits : gearbox lost 5th gear obviously no tax or mot. bodywork needs some attention, nothing major but it has some battle scars and front bumper has a dent from a towbar (spare bumper comes with car but needs spraying) - i will take pics... it's not running as well as it was, i fire it up every week or two but it's not been used other than that and must need a damn good service to get it back to running well again. currently not ticking over, probably just speed sensor but might be something more simple. Saddest part is i would love to restore it again, i don't have the time or inclination to do it at the moment but i'm not going to let it go for peanuts. i know what its worth to split the parts, just i'd rather see it go to someone who will look after 'her' like i did. So considering i paid out over £1500 just before i took her off the road you can understand that i want to get more than that for the whole car. - yes i know what they fetch, i've seen the market, i know lots of people are going to offer a lot less but i won't let it go and you'll be wasting both our times. so if your going to offer £1500 or less, really don't bother to contact me. i'm not desperate to sell, i don't need the money or the space, i really am testing the water to see what it would fetch as it is rather than my spending the money to get it back on the road to either sell or use again. i might consider an sensible offer. you can come and look her over, i'd prefer no-one kicked the tyres and sucked their teeth - heard it all before as i'm ex trade too! obviously no test drives... i won't be splitting the car so don't offer same goes with part ex's though i'm sure your ex was lovely once if your swapping her for a car there must be a reason... Best way to contact me is via email, i won't be on here very often and my phones too busy! [email protected] if your sensible with offers i'll reply, if your not then don't expect a reply - sorry. i will answer any questions of what i might have missed...

  7. Looks like i have taken over this post with my problems! More info on mine, good news at last!! I have finally found a good specialist for transmission problems in my area - rather than the usual "you need a new box mate" i get from every garage. From just the phone call yo uknow the guy has 20 odd years exp. of doing gearboxes, he said straight away what the problem was and what needed doing to fix it - without removing it from the car or doing a full strip down! Just like someone else said about the 5th gear shearing a bolt, this is 99% of the problem on mine and should be easy enough to do. though this was an estimate and due to the sound of the damage done from it going he says it wil need a new 5th main drive gear, 5th gear synchro, and possibly main drive gear. All to be seen on inspection but price was reasonable. When the weather gets a bit better i'm going to have a look myself first as i have found a place to get box parts at sensible prices and it doesnt sound too challenging (i'm ex trade from way back) so maybe for the spring i will have this back on the road again!
  8. Just been looking at my mates passat vr6 (for sale if anyones interested) and considering how much play is in my rods i would think that its pretty certain thats where the problem is on mine - fingers crossed i might have this back on the road when i finally get some time off work!
  9. I wasnt convinced that the box was knackered, had a look the other day with a mate and now convinced somethings going on with the selector. By changing gear on the selector itself all gears appear to go in fine with a bit of play to be expected, using the gear-lever i get all the problems i listed above. Having a second pair of hands to do this with me as i sat in the car, i did manage to feel the bite of 5th gear. To me that would say that the box is ok after all. There is a lot of play in both ends of the selector rod (mainly the lower one, not the one you can adjust) and it all feels sloppy as hell by the stick. Going to look into getting that mentioned ball end for that rod, i'd had it on good authority from a mechanic that had an identical problem on a golf vr box, would like to prove them wrong! Does anyone know if the vw stealers do a repair kit for the lot so i can sort out everything - so it's like new but without having to replace the rods preferrably?
  10. I agree with everyone else, car looks super cool. Just not with black wheels, i feel like lending you my silver ones while my cars off the road just to stop the painful image they leave in my brain! Gone back to my speedlines now after loads of grief with wolfrace voodoo 2's (with 205/40/17s) kept denting the soft alloy and getting flat-spots. got them when everyone seemed to be putting audi tt style wheels on vw's to be a bit different, still got 5 left if someone fancies trying to get them sorted? Would swap for a good gearbox at the moment! I have the same colour vr6 too, not as tidy as yours - paints really letting her down but then keeps going wrong so money has gone into keeping running, aethetics come later...
  11. having just looked at the post : Jassonvr6 my satin silver vr6 I think i will really miss mine if i let her go now and i've spent too much on her to let go cheap. If anyone has a really good condition box or know of anywhere that sells good recons i'd be very very interested. Still toying with the idea of an r32 box or similar, what else goes in easily? I know someone who was putting an audi box in but i can't remember what one he was using (s3? i know it was a 6 speed) - will have to ring him to find out what happened to a mate of ours that had a head-on in his a few weeks ago (who is ok, car a bit dented i heard) Pity me though, driving a corsa 1400 16v AUTO!?!? for the next month till i get something sorted!!
  12. Another update on mine... The shaft bearings are gone, it's lifting up the shaft stopping the 5th gear from engaging properly internally of the box itself. Bugger! Having a think about what to do next, might be selling her. Looking for a guaranteed box only to replace it thoguh i would love to put a 6 speed in i don't have time/money/enthusiasm for a project like that at the moment. So it looks like it's off the road again for the time being...
  13. I'm going to have another look at it, all the linkages seem to be fine as it selects everything as it should and mainly seems like the problems start with trying to engage 5th and getting the grinding noise. Then in neutral with the clutch up theres still a wirring from inside the box but only after trying 5th. My garage just looked at it and was talking to another mechanic that had just done a golf vr6 box... They reckon that the 5th on these is not right by the inspection plate (i'm going to be having a look when i get a chance anyway to see if there is any signs of problems whatever happens) Also that the problem may not be the 5th gear coming loose but if the shaft bearings have gone and when selecting 5th it's lifting the shaft which stops it lining up properly. Basic diagnosis was that it would be better and cheaper to get a guaranteed box to replace it! I would love it to be just the linkage part like you say but then it does seem to be a bit more serious unfortunately, i will probably get new ones anyway now as it looks like it's off the road for a while again as i don't have much time to do anything to it!
  14. If your having similar problems with loss of gears i would suggest looking at 'lost 5th gear' where my saga at least continues... reverse and 5th seem to be the usual suspects, these two posts have helped me so far
  15. I replaced the top one, the all plastic one. Just been to my mates garage to get him to have a look. He reckons the 5th gears not engaging inside the box and that the noise after trying to select it means it's still free-wheeling as such and not going back where it's supposed to be, so it does look like the inspection plates coming off to see what the problem is. The gears select as they should so it doesnt look like the easy fix of changing the other linkage that you mentioned unfortunately. I have too much on this week so i have booked it in for tuesday, fingers crossed...
  16. yeh, replaced the linkage when i lost reverse a few weeks ago, been fine since then - till now. no 5th gear, grinds when you try to engage it and when in neutral makes noise when clutch up, making noises when moving too that sound like coming from the box. not looking good, having to drive an auto corsa while it's off the road again!
  17. How did it go with yours? just got the same problem on my vr6, different box but sounds like exactly the same fault you had...
  18. fitted said part over a week ago and got all my gears working really well, and then... on a long drive jumped out of 5th, trying to put back into gear makes a slight grinding noise now that rac tried to adjust it - i was only after a tow home 150miles. that said from point of break-down to getting home took over 9hrs!! Rac will be getting a big complaint for this one and i stil have to fix the damn car again!
  19. starters done now, had to drive an auto corsa for a week as i had no time with work to do it! part for gears finally came into the stealers weds so picking up tomorrow, still a long list of faults to fix but so glad to get back into it this week...
  20. just had exactly the same problem, kinda. I lost reverse and checked the allignment on the stick and then found the same joint cracked on mine (though not quite as bad) Worth noting that there is a bit of adjustment you can do on that joint, this has allowed me to get all my gears back until vw get the part in (or until it cracks completely) After i adjusted it, took it for a test drive, did another adjustment - and broke down with another problem. Good news for me is that my starter motor is knackered, it's good news because i've had a fault for ages that neither i or 3 auto electricians have been able to fix properly. When the engine gets hot and the engine is turned off (or stalled) i then can't restart the car. Been thinking it was imobiliser problem but the solenoid is getting hot, expanding and seizing in the starter - then takes ages to cool down so i can restart. £70 from euros later, £10 from vw and i have a working car again (phew)
  21. That was a pass by the way on the mot, so much better when you can see where the hell your going! Next is the horrid steering problem to fix, to narrow down the problem further new track rods going on this week... Then the annoying minor running problems, if all goes well i will finally get the bodywork sorted out! I lost interest and tried to sell it earlier this year, was expecting to get £2500 with poor bodywork but very good mechanically - i was getting offered £1k (which i had just spent that much getting engine re-built) Would rather keep it than let it go for that little even if i bought a replacement car!
  22. I did try to reply to this the other day, failed, just posted my saved reply so you can see what i was thinking but below is how i solved it... thanks for your input everyone, i think i have it all sorted now... I tried the main 'stealers' they don't do the reflectors on there own, the headlight assembly costs £150 each i think + vat Euros etc can only get them from main dealer and charge £170+ My route... I was going to try painting them but i ended up using 'mirror-lon' which is a sticky reflective tape that i use for work - that improved things about 1%!! I bought some bigger bulbs to try (80/100w) which helped a little on their own but not enough to pass the mot. I had a good check of the electrics, as expected the voltage at the bulbs was low (suprise suprise) but also my battery was holding a low charge. The aternator is not charging properly and the new battery is low becasue of that, with a charged battery there was a noticable improvement, so much better. Now wanting to keep the better bulbs in i bought one of the uprated looms of ebay, very suprised to find it here the next morning (royal mail 1st class actually came through in time for once!) All fitted and was using tonight, got flashed for my lights being too bright. So i would say it is all fixed, going in for re-test on the mot tomorrow but i can't see how it would fail. This is the brightest my lights have ever been and an upgrade i should have done a long time ago! Now it's all the other problems to sort out! What i can't understand is if we all spend a fortune maintaining and improving our cars (they are great, when they work!) how come when i tried to sell mine last year i got offered peanuts - they really don't hold their value anymore!
  23. It would only be a temporary fix just to get the mot, not going to leave it like that. So far, i tried vw (or the stealers), they don't sell the parts seperately but a new one will set you back £150 each +vat i think Euro wanted 170 as main dealer only, i saw in-pro's in germany for 150 so may go for that in the long run. I have some reflective sticky tape (mirror-lon) which i use in work (high temperature stuff for use with lights) and i've covered the reflectors in that for now. Put in 100/80w bulbs to try and it's no brighter (i know how much they pull current wise) So the next thing is if my wiring really is bad as there is little differece from standard bulbs, which is what i'm about to look into and then see what the best plan is after that.
  24. Just failed my mot, done all the other things with no problems, only thing remaining is the light output is poor (even for a 'c') On looking inside you can easily see the yellow on the reflector, my mates vr6 passat failed the same way... So my question is... I'm running 55/60w bulbs, i don't really want to uprate the wiring as i'm getting only just under 12volts at the bulb anyway but what would happen if i just put in a 100w bulb in place of my stock ones? If that does sound iffy to do then what about the Xenons? Are they really that good and who sells the NON blue-tinted ones at a sensible price? Would the Xenon 55/60w really improve the headlights enough with dodgy reflectors to pass an mot?? Looking at the other topics about hid's, Xenons, etc i just want an easy fix on this one and then after my mot's done i will look at taking things further.
  25. Wish i'd seen them today before i started on mine, i was looking yesterday as mine started fuse blowing when on my way home yesterday. I was going to take a picture of mine fully apart but i got too involved in it all. Took me about 5hrs in all. That included putting the micro-switches back in the wrong order (something to be aware of when taking apart) - luckily i found this out before putting the assembly back in the car! I also had one of the screws holding the 'shaft seal plates' (as i've named them) on the outside of the car that then needed drilling out. Glad i did it but a pain of a job even for the more competent among us, all works great now though so well worth it - now on to the next in a long list of problems to sort out... If anyone hears of a satin silver front bumper for sale, would save me getting one sprayed for mine...
