The problem with my 16v idling too high continues, and seems to be getting worse! When I drive normally during the day, there is no problem, but as soon as the battery is loaded up, by putting the lights on, or the fan coming on, then the idle revs jump from 1000 to 1500 or more, sometimes up to 2000. Sometimes (not always), if I put on handbrake, then the revs drop to normal, and I can see a slight increase in the brightness of the headlights when I put on the handbrake too. When the fan comes on, I also get the coolant warning light coming on, even though the level is OK, the fan is working correctly. If the fan is on but the engine is cool enough for the warning light to go off, then I use the wipers, the warning light willl flash on and off in time with the wipers!!!!!!!! I am not making this up - has anyone got any ideas? The only thing I can think of is that the battery drain is too high, and the alternator is engine revs are rising to try and provide more juice via the alternator. Or would this be complete rubbish? My electrics aren't that good :?

One of the gas struts for the boot lid has snapped on my 16v, so it won't stay up any more. Anyone know what size will fit, or where I can get one for a sensible price? I've tried VW (£60+VAT), and I can't find a C in a scrapyard anywhere - help, before the broom handle slips, and the boot lid comes down and kills me!!!!!!

No-one got any ideas? :(

Just had a quote from Gastech of £1750 + VAT. This seems a bit steep. do you think it would be cheaper elsewhere if I hunted around?

I'm considering an LPG conversion for my '90 1.8 16v. Does anyone know if it's possible on my car? Would it affect the power, and what would the cost be? I'm currently commuting 500 miles a week, so it would save me over £1000 a year if I can do it. Thanks Andy. :D

Never had A/C as far as I know. It gets wierder though. Today I drove in to work, no probs with the idle as it was cold, so the fan never came on, until I had to stop at a railway crossing. This time, when the fan came on, the revs rose slightly, then settled back at 1000rpm. The revs stayed at 1000rpm, until I took off the handbrake, then they went up to 1500! I put the handbrake back on, and the revs went back to 1000 again. Took off the brake again, and the revs rose again! I really am not kidding!!! I really don't have a clue whats going on. could this be the wierdest problem ever seen on a C?

OK, here's an odd one. My 16v idles at 1000 rpm, until it gets hot, then when the fan comes on, the idle revs go up to 1500! Then the car idles at 1500 for the rest of the journey. I've also noticed that when the car is warm (water temp over 95deg), the temperature warning light flashes whenever I flash my lights, and sometimes when I use the indicators too! Anyone got any ideas? Are these two problems related? I'd appreciate any help. Andy.

Hmm, I do get the exhaust banging over the bumps, and I've just had a new back mounting fitted. Could be the solution methinks.....

Crikey, how do I describe it? OK, it's like if you were to drag a scaffold bar across a fairly smooth concrete floor, or the noise you'd get in your ears if you were standing in a hurricane! If I put my foot down hard, it kicks in after a couple of seconds, and carries on constantly until I ease up on the throttle. It's not the exhaust, only had it checked the other day. It's plenty loud enough to hear with the windows closed, even at 70mph, and it only happens on hard acceleration. not while cruising or during braking. Straight line or round corners, doesn't seem to make any difference! It's a puzzler......

I need a complete new system for my 16v. Can anyone recommend a good custom builder in the Cambs area, and give me an idea of the sort of prices I'd be looking at? I don't want anything fancy.

Tightening the idle screw seems to have doen the trick for now anyway, been OK 4 days and counting.... Cheers for all the help guys.

My 16v is making a horrible noise that sounds like something scraping, or a very loud air rushing noise on hard acceleration, which happens in every gear, and gets louder as the revs go up..Seems to be coming from the passenger side but it's quite hard to tell when driving. If I'm easy on throttle it doesn't happen, and it's not causing any problems with the car. It also doesn't occur at speeds lower that 30mph. What could it be??? It's loud enough to cause me serious worry.....could it be a wheel bearing or something like that? It's not noticeably worse round corners.

The idle screw did seem a bit loose. Is the ISV part of the assembly that it screws into? Don't really know my way round that part of the car, never had to before!
