  1. Haha similar thing happened to me in a car park the other day, reversed out of a space, went for first but nothing :? Got me mate to push me back into me space :lol: , popped the bonnet, and the bolt had fallen out. Was nicely sat on top of the 'box. I used me spanner fingers, tightened up when back at work. Life would be boring without the rado!!!
  2. Neil, I'm in sheffield and have similar thoughts on replacing steering parts on my VR. Before I splash out though i want to compare cars with someone else so if you want to meet up and have a comparison one day let me know. Oh and I work with jim needham, he told me about you when i bought my rado. Maybe we can get him out in his Mingi and show him what real cars are like? Ben
  3. Fitted new header tank, tried to get rid of some rattles (failed :( ) and also found this on the front drivers arch after going to tesco this morning Why do people have to drive like complete retards and crash into my car?

Well I was originally going to use 90 brackets attached to the base and the back of the uprights, then screw down from the top of the parcel shelf supports as the wood fits nicely under the lip under the supports. However, using cardboard to make templates has works really well and once i'd carpeted them i found that if i located the top under the supports and tapped in the bottom with a hammer the flex in the supports pins them in really well. Again, give them a good tug and they'll come out, which i think is ideal if you have a bulb go. I accept that from an accustic point of veiw they're no good, but then neither is my poop head unit, poop stock wiring and poop front speakers :lol: Supreme; BMX, slicks, 100psi in the tyres and no brakes = london to brighton in no time!
  5. Right, as a man of my word, i bring you pictures of the completion of the boot. Speakers in, sounds ok but needs a small amp i think to finish off. :D
  6. Jay; bike has to have wheels out, luckily i've got them maxle's in me bike so its nice and easy. if you had normal bolt thru it would prob still be easier to put it on the back. As for spare, it would fit if i had one!! (Not sensible on a daily, but the RAC man likes coming out to work on a more unusual car) It doesn't need fixing if you get the front to back length right. As you can see, i did mine in 2 parts for ease of construction (also 8x4 sheets aren't wide enough) and they fit such that the back is restrained by the back of the boot and turrets, and the front has tabs that locate on the bit that sticks up before the rear footwell. Fit is snug, it doesn't move at all but if i need to get under it for any reason all i need is a little bit of muscle. Alex; I'm with you that its not as tidy as it could be, but tbh for me it serves a purpose. The car came with no rear seats and front seats that don't fold, so rears would be ornaments anyway :lol: and as said before, i like putting the bike in it and not worrying about scratching paint with a rack. To this end, its pointless making it really nice and plush as it gets covered in mud anyway I've had today off and have started on the uprights to go behind the turrets, up to back of boot. These are housing some 6x9's and are carpeted in the same material. I'll get a pic tomorrow. Ben (PS, my longest post ever)
  7. Its not the prettiest in the world, but its ok. I got carpet from a roll end center, chipboard from b&q and a bit of glue and stuff, all in was £25. Fits a full bike well, and never have to give people lifts!

Hi Chaps, Cheeky I know, but I'm hoping someone in the S yorks area can help me out in a few weeks time (well, the start of Feb when i get paid!) by lending me a set of 4x100 wheels to trundle around on for a few days whilst i strip my schmidts and re-seal them. They're leaking air like mad now, I'm having to pump them up every few days (they'll be down to 11-12 psi within a week :shock: ) So, anyone got a spare set of wheels they wouldn't mind lending me for a few days? The shonkier the better really, it'd be fun to roll on rusty steelies if anyone's got some! :lol: Thanks in advance Ben
  10. Stick with it i say. My VR has a pretty poor conversion from a 16v, wiring is untidy and the loom shorted and fused itself together back in october. There is very little interior and when i got it the heater matrix was bypassed. since then I've had misfires and crazy temp gague all in a couple of weeks. All this for £3k. I don't have kids or a mortgage, my only commitment is work 9-5 therefore i have plenty of free time, so i get suck in when owt goes wrong. I have the option of cycling to work if needs be so if its off the road for a few days its not problem. Oh, and i have no driveway and no garage, all work is done on a sheffield street. I use the car every day, have covered 4k miles in as many months and did 600 miles to edinburgh and back in 4 days last week. What I'm trying to say is that if you can afford the time, and have the option of not having a car for a few days try keeping it but doing bits and bobs yourself. The one thing you wont be able to do, the engine, is already done, everything else is possible no? Oh, and you can get the 'tow me anywhere' RAC option for £7 a month if all else fails! :lol:
  11. Little update: Was going to get the false floor finanlly done over christmas, but the thing decided to start mis-firing on boxing day and the battery died on me christmas day. New battery, plugs, leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap on and shes runs beautifully again :D Drove to edinburgh and back for new year from sheffield and happy to say she did 600 trouble free miles in 4 days. Have to get some aero wipers sorted though, the A68 would have been fun if i could have seen where i was off!!
  12. Evening chaps, I went out today to get myself a new oil filter and some oil, thinking if i just read the code off and gave it to the good halfords man he'd give me the right filter. Well having a 90 car that has a vr6 engine of unknown origin this proves difficult, and despite me trying to find the code on several occasions I've still not worked out what it is. I don't think there is a bar code on the chain cover (I'm not off out to check now anyway!) and i think thats the normal place to check. So is there another slamp on the block? Cheers in advance Ben

  14. Yeah i got it from si, don't think the poor lad was keen to sell! I bought it wanting somehing a bit less mundane than the old a4 i was usung to do the 16 mile round trip every day, however the amount of work to get it to daily was a bit more than i expected :? Plans are just to make more reliable at the moment, heater had to be done since i was feckin freezin before. I've spent a little time on the interior today, been pricing up the flase floor too. Hopefully it'll be nice and tidy inside soonish. I'll get workin on it, get some pics :D
  15. Yeah the previous owner had put pics on e38 and there were a few comments on there about the light surrounds. I'm thinking of doing them but maybe the grill also? Anyone want to do me a photoshop that'd be nice !
  16. Just to update, The electrical prob was down to the loom not being properly attached to the bulk head. It touched on the manifold, melted a big bugger power cable into some smaller ones and they all ended up as a big black smouldering mess. I chased the burnt section through the loom, finding its limits and replaced each wire one by one. Took a full day to do but she's done over 1k miles now without hiccup so worth the time and effort! While dash was out i put a new heater matrix in. I used a Valeo unit from GSF for about £40. When i bought the car i failed to notice it had been bypassed. No more wet carpets and steamy windows for me now! If anyone is considering doing this job, go for it, time consuming but not hard at all and now i never have heating on full wack cos its too damn warm in there!

  18. I've had a look at the headlight switch, all beams work correctly and the unit and wiring as far as i can see looks fine. Plus its an early style switch, do these have the same probs as the later ones? I had a fiddle last night and the car will now turn the engine off but the ignition stays on as if the first click of the key is still turned. Also, when the engine turns off, the speedo needle moves a bit, and i hear more odd noises from the fuel pump. I've also noticed a dampness in the carpet in the drivers footwell, green residue around the vent on the transmission tunnel a loss in coolant and a realised my windows mist too easily. Also, the heater doesn't work. Therefore, a new heater matrix will be fitted this weekend. As the car is a VR conversion and was born a 16v the wiring isn't factory. I'm guessing again now but i'm thinking some water was in the drivers vent, leaked onto somehting electrical and caused my problems. Plausable? Cheers
  19. Hi, I've recently bought this from a guy called Si in Birmingham. It was a 16v converted to a VR, and he did some other mods including the TH lines, jamex coilies and a few exterior bits. When it goes, it drives really well. At the moment its got an electrical fault so is going no-where! These are mainly his pics at the moment, will update this tread as time goes by! Cheers
  20. Cheers for that, I'll give it a change anyway since i can see the tricky screw has been taken out already to replace it, so i'm guessing it may have been replaced with a cheap pattern one
  21. Ha, i bet the insurance pay out more than covered the repair bill for that! I'm going to ring the guy who wired the thing only a month ago in a bit, I'll let you all know what he reckons Cheers
  22. UPDATE: Spoke to the previous owner tonight and he says he had to replace the fuel pump relay since the pump kept buzzing even once primed. I didn't know the buzzing was meant to stop to be honest, so I now realise its buzzing all the time the car is running. There is also a smell of petrol in the cabin when you come to a stop. I think the raly must have failed again. It gets more complicated though. I've just been out up the road in it and the damn thing won't idle, and its constantly trying to cut out when your driving. And it still won't turn off. Is the random revving down to over fuelling? and will it not turn off because of the pump not turning off? Also, does a relay smoke that much when it goes? Sorry for the long post, there are just so many questions!
  23. Cheers for that, i pulled each relay out and had a look/ sniffed it but nothing smelled like the burning earlier. Hopefully someine will be able to tell me which one is the culprit :?
  24. Hi, as i was driving home today just as I drove up my road my VR lost power, became very juddery and I smelt burning. I pulled over and the cabin was flooded with white smoke. The smoke was coming from around the dash speaker grill. I tried to tuen the car off straight away (whilst getting the hell out!) but even after pulling the key out the engine kept running?!? I've spent the afternoon trying to see where the smoke was coming from, but can't see anything. I've disconnected the battery and tried starting a few times but each time i have to stall the car to stop it. Once stalled, the ignition stays on (not at the click where the fans come on etc, but where the fuel gague works and the battery light comes on. Now i would have thought ignition switch was to blame, but when the engine is running and i take the key out with the lights on full they switch down to sidelights (engine still running of course). Also, why smoke from the speaker grill if the ignition switch failed? All help appreciated, thanks in advance Ben
