About £1500 then.... That might have to wait!

What kind of money is a oversize valve job these days?
-
Thanks for the input guys, all good stuff. Which model Golf does the 3.68 drive typically get donated from btw? I did think that uprated injectors were not typically needed but given that a set of used red top 315's go pretty cheap and that the inlet manifold and head will be coming off anyway it would be worthwhile given eventual sc plans??? Another thing, is it worth adding a high compression gasket while the car remains NA or are the gains negligible?
-
I do certainly agree but my thinking was that by working up a solid na build the eventual charger will be better complimented by the existing mods.
-
Firstly sorry if this post irritates some as I know most of the info is out there and I have searched and found a lot but would like some clarification on my plans, thanks in advance guys all input is appreciated. Finally putting my 86k vr6 back on the road after its much needed respray and two years sitting, before it goes back together I'm spending some on a few extra ponies, nothing major and trying to buy most bits used keeping it na but with a mind to go sc in the future so mods will need to complement the eventual charger. I have a flowed head with matched lower inlet that i picked up cheap as it needs some refurbing, not sure of origin but apparently it was brought in a gb many years ago on club gti, I'm already running a bmc cda and 2.5" custom decat exhaust, 312mm brakes, silverline x coilies, uprated arb's and fully polybushed. I'm planning schimmel 263 cams, 315 injectors, raceland manifold, stealth map, possible schrick manifold, oil cooler and larger tb. What I'd like to know is whether my cam and injector choice is right given that it will go sc eventually, I know many would suggest 268's but I thought the schimmel 263's would give best na results while being a good compromise when the charger is added. Am I going in the right direction and are there any other mods I should be thinking off??? Many thanks - Ed

Just thought I'd add my two cents as I'm a screen fitter for National Windscreens. The Rado is well recognised by fitters as being a complete bast@rd to do largely down to trims and how the screen is recessed into the aperture but to be frank any experienced engineer shouldn't have issues fitting other than it being time consuming, leaks are pretty rare and once again really down to fitting. Some points to note - the best quality glass is Pilkington and Guardian, the more common poor quality manufacturers are: Nordglass, Safevue, RAC own brand and Shatterproof, when booking your screen replacement it is your right to say you'd prefer a particular make. From experience you can book your screen to be replaced regardless of what type of damage it has, just tell the phone operator that it's cracked and I promise you the fitter who comes out will not give a monkeys and will replace regardless, remember it's another job to the company and I would be willing bet my next pay check that it will never get questioned or even mentioned to the insurance company. The biggest thing you need to worry about when having your screen replaced is damage to paintwork around the aperture, which in itself is no real issue just as long as the fitter applies a liberal amount primer prior to glueing up, just go and look at the aperture once the engineer has removed the old one, its your right to be picky. Rusty apertures should always be sorted out prior to refitting, trust me it's worth the expense and having the car off the road. All insurance approved windscreen firms are legally bound to guarantee the screen against leaks and stress cracks. £250 is about right for replacement inc trims, I know my firm is £238 plus vat. And I'm certain we could do a very good deal on a group buy if the interest was there (just please don't bring them all to my branch as I'd get murdered by the other fitters)!!! Autoglass despite some poor feedback are probably the best trained fitters out there, they sometimes get bad feedback largely due to the amount of work they do there has to be some poor jobs just by rule of averages, just don't expect them to be cheap, they are by far and away the most expensive out there and use exactly the same products as all other firms. Think that's most of the important stuff covered, sorry for the essay.... Regards - Ed

SOLD, SOLD, SOLD I'm starting this thread as I feel a bit guilty in letting the seller down last minute and backing out. The car is local to me (tunbridge wells) and has been off the road for the last 6 months or so but is taxed to the end of May and has 8 months MOT, 145k and reasonable service history. Basically it's the perfect donor car for a 24v/4motion conversion, it's quite untidy and to put back on the road would need a little thrown at tires, brakes, service etc but isn't that far off if you did want to have it as a cheap hack, I've driven it and it seems mechanically sound. I was going to rip it apart to go into my C but decided last minute that I really didn't need to chuck any more money at the car when I've got so many different projects on the go all needing the cash more. The guy had it up for £900 and I beat him down to £650 which I'm pretty sure is the lowest he would take. If anyone is interested pm me and I'll pass on contact details. Cheers - Ed

Closing my VR6 engine "what's it worth thread"
Ed21 replied to Ed21's topic in Site Comments and Questions
I'm not unhappy with the forum, it is a superb resource of information and the members are some of best informed and helpful I've come across on on any forum. It just annoyed me that the thread had the negative response it got and that I didn't get to thank the guys who provided valued info before it got locked. -
Ok guys this is ridiculous, lets put this straight. I may of asked that annoying question: what's something worth??? I've asked it because I wanted the opinion of experienced and well informed people who know the subject better than any Google or EBay search can provide, of course I have a reasonable idea of what vr6 lumps go for but I was just asking so that I might clarify before I advertise at too high or low price, I sell used motorcycle parts all the time so I do know how the used market works, I just wanted advice not an argument..... Ed.

I've finally got myself a R32 engine to go in the Rado and so the vr6 obviously has to go, problem is I'm not sure what I can sell it for as I've seen so many go for peanuts. It's got a genuine 86k and has just had extensive work done within the last 1000 miles (invoice to prove), head has been fully rebuilt with new guides, all new exhaust valves etc, new chains and guides and new oil and water pumps. It would be going virtually complete with all ancillary parts inc coil, throttle body, isv, both intake and exhaust manifolds, engine loom etc etc. only parts not included which are required for the conversion will be flywheel, clutch, thermostat housing, crack pipe, aux water pump and starter motor. Given condition i'd of thought i should be able to get £300-£400 for it but don't know if I'm being unrealistic?? Hence why I'm asking the guru's of all things Corrado..... Any input would be greatly appreciated guys, cheers - Ed.

Free complete black cloth interior, late spec vgc, did i mention free!!!
Ed21 replied to Ed21's topic in Parts for Sale
Gentlemen, I know a lot of you have expressed your interest in this but might I remind you that saying if I get to you before the other guy can I have it is a little unsporting.... and not in the usual spirit of this forum. Not naming names but I've had texts/calls from 3 different members to this effect. If Phill does not collect Sunday (which i'm quite sure he will) than it shall go back to first come first served. Free complete black cloth interior, late spec vgc, did i mention free!!!
Ed21 replied to Ed21's topic in Parts for Sale
Yours mate, got your text just give me a call after work. -
FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE, GET THE IDEA??? After having brought leather for the car over a year ago my parents have finally got so sick of the old cloth taking up half their dining room they've threatened to skip it if i don't get rid of it or remove it to my place, which being already so crammed full of crap that i have absolutely nowhere to put it. So..... it has to go, i know it's not worth a huge amount (£150 max) but I have so many other bit's n pieces to get shot off that i don't have time to wait for it to sell hence it being FREE TO THE FIRST PERSON WILLING TO COME AND COLLECT!!! It's the late black varient with purple flecks/squiggles??, is in really good nick having only covered 85k, no burns, rips or tears, drivers seat bolster is ever so slightly starting to sag but really is minimal, if i remember correctly the drivers side pull handle has come off but i have it knocking around and the only other thing is that the seatbelt clips/fasteners are not included on front seats. It is a complete interior consisting of: front/rear seats + rear hump and front/rear door cards (minus front speaker pods/door pockets). No pics yet, but i'll try to get round to posting soon. MUST GO COMPLETE, I DON'T CARE IF YOU WANT TO SELL IT AFTER JUST AS LONG AS IT'S GONE, SOON..... PICK UP FROM PEMBURY, KENT (Just outside T Wells). PREFERABLY PLEASE CALL ME (ED) ON: 07983403655 RATHER THAN PM'S OR THIS THREAD AS I GET VERY LITTLE TIME TO GET ONLINE DURING THE WORKING WEEK.

I've finally got fed up of worrying about high oil temps so am in the market for a aftermarket oil cooler, pref mocal 16 row but anything considered. Fitting kit included would help but not essential. Cheers - Ed
-
Would you take £50 posted on the grill?
-
I can see your confident in your fitting ability so please don't take offence to me adding my two cents but this is how I'd do it: Wire it out using diamond filament wire (side to side), don't try Kent knifing it top and sides as your very likely to crack it even if you use a serated blade, best of luck mate.
-
We can probably source them depending on whether they're available aftermarket or from VW, they weren't showing on the system when I looked but I'm sure they wouldn't be a issue to find if I made some calls. That is of course if they're needed, just depends whether the old ones come out ok. We can order them for the job and if they're not needed we just send back to the distributer.
-
I'm a windscreen fitter for National Mobile Windsreens and can tell you that the Corrado is one of the nastiest jobs out there and unless your very, very careful you'll struggle to remove one without cracking it so used screens are a rarity. Saying that though Im soon to respray my C and will be fitting a new one so if we get my old one out unscathed you can have it cheap (one small chip repair). Alternatively we can fit a new one all in for £200 plus vat minus new trims which would prob be around an extra £60. Regards Ed

You don't ask, you don't get... In this instance asking somewhat backfired!! :)
-
Bugga it, i'd of stretched to £100! If Kenny changes his mind i'll take second dibs ;)
-
I'll give you £90 for the bmc inc postage mate, do you have any pics?
-
Hi Stu, you've already had a pm from me regarding the front splitter but thought I'd put dibs on it in the breaking thread to secure. Also interested in the os side of the flimsy drainage tray that sits above the wiper motor/linkage and if you have just a late spec ns headlight glass (not complete light) I'll have your arm off for it!
-
Ok well I don't have one to compare it against so will leave I think mate just in case it's different, cheers anyway.
