Guys, Just tarting up the VR before selling the old gal. The only problem with the car is irregular temp readings on the console. Car does not overheat but will mostly show normal running temp and will occasionally drop down to around the 70 mark. I assume that this will be a faulty signal from the termostat. If I'm right, is the thermostat an easy DIY job? Alternatively, if anyone has any other suggestions as to what it may be, I'd be keen to hear diagnosis/repair suggestions. Thanks

Will these be for VR? If so, I'll have one, dependant on cost. Thats nice and specific for you.....

Whilst I am no expert in the field by any stretch of the imagination, any conversations I've had with tuners about the Shrick/VGI have all been along the lines of "In isolation its an excellent modification but when combined with other mods such as altered cam profiles, reduce the noticable performance delivered by the inlet mainifold". Could it be that the VGI is effectively designed to go an a standard engine rather then a highly tuned one! Just a thought....

Phat, your signature is now longer than your messages! Although I suspect you are the type not to get involved in the "I got more BHP and Torque than you" agrument, what's your VR putting out these days?
-
Can you simply pop them in place of the std VR 5-speed?
-
Nice one phat. Dummies question, did the 3.94 final drive come with the six speed box or did you have to modify the box to get the drive? Does the 6-speed box (I assume from a Golf or Passat) swap straight in? Are there any "full lock" issues? Finally, a further dummies question but what is the castor? Recently, my bog standard VR has been keeping good company at Knockhill. Boxsters are no competition (The S will pull ahead slightly uphill on the straight), M3's (and other BMW's and Mercedes) are easily kept up with as they have to tip-toe more round all the corners. Only thorn in the side are the Elise's and Caterhams which lets face it are built for that sort of stuff. Suspect the gearbox might help that though! To respond to a previous suggestion, there is no way a standard MK1 or MK2 golf is better on the track than the VR! Not even worth debating....

I am now fortunate enough to have the VR as a "2nd" car and its not getting much use now. I've been toying with the idea of making some modifications to make the car more spritely going round Knockhill. Given its a 2nd motor I do not want, or feel that I need to make radical imrovements to the performance. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do? Comfort is not an issue so the suspension's been dropped by 30mm with Billi's on it. I'm thinking abour doing away with rear seats, carpets, speakers etc. and wondered if anyone has done this and if a significant enough amount of weight is lost to make it worthwhile? Anyting else that can go? Any suggestions apprecaited. Mark '94 Black VR

Was dying for a piss and waiting for the bog at a petrol station in Aberdeen this afternoon and picked up a car mag which features the new Golf MKV GTi while I was waiting. Difficult to read whilst holding the jewels and hopping from one leg to the other, but the 200 BHP 2.0L Turbo engine in it sounds quite tasty. Shame it looks like a bag of shite. Should put an end to all this 1.8T nonsense.... :D

I think the R32 conversion is one to watch for. Remember this engine is now being used in the Golf IV, the new Golf V, Passat, Audi A3, Audi TT and I think, although I dont know why, in some Mercedes. It will totally blow away the 20vT cause its gonna give the C the power, but still with plenty of weight over the front. Also think that now folk are getting the hang of the syncro conversion we could see a few more of these. Just think, 240 bhp (£500 to get to 270 bhp) from a standard (therefore reliable) engine plonked in (OK so not so easy as to just plonk...). Has anyone ever tried to buy an engine direct from VW motorsport?
-
Well, have ya? I know someone in Scotland was close to finishing strapping one into a G60 shell a few months ago.
-
No, but I do have a Miltek. Can anyone tell me what difference fitting a set of new cams and getting a re-chip will do? Is it simply more top end power or does the whole power-band change?
-
Put a VR6 engine in it....

OK, almost went for a "Shrek" (hmm) manifold but decided against it. Main reason is that I actually like taking the VR up to 6,000 PRM and scaring pedestrians with my K&N as I nail it in 2nd. I drove Euan's "Shrek'd" VR recently and it is an excellent modification to make as you can make serious progress without hoing above 4,000 RPM. Just does not suit my style of driving. I am not averse to spending £1,500 on the VR so what engine mods would you spend the cash on to improve power? Current thoughts are: Front/rear engine mounts, big bore Throttle Body, re-map, 268 cams. Anyone know how the performance readings would be after this lot? Cheers Mark

And for those of us who don't live at least 300 miles north of London, I can assure you that Birmingham is not "up North". Geographically it may be north of London but as part of GB it is in the Midlands region, implying therefore that its in the middle. If you think a two hour pansy drive to Birmingham is taking you to the northern climes of this country then I suggest you get the 'raddo warmed-up and spend a pant wetting 13 hours driving up to Bonnie Scotland and melting it up the west coast. Nice. Any other trivial nit-picking required.....
