  1. Hi, I took my C to VW at the weekend to have a look at my interior fan. The thing has stopped working on setting 1 and the AC now only works on setting 1! So I have AC but no fan or fan but no aircon!! The upshot of this meeting was that the mechanic thought that I needed a new switch for the fan. Aparently behind the fan control dial there are two switches, one for the fan and another for the AC. The mechanic said that the whole unit would need replacing as the fan, heater and aircon control module is only avaibable in one piece. He also said it would cost at least £250 to replace. Please can you tell me if: a) You agree with VWs diagnosis. b) It is true that the whole fan/ heater / AC control module comes as a single unit. c) You know a very good garage in SW London (Twickenham area) that can be relied on to do the work and not rip me off like VW want to - they are on £100 per hour. Thanks

    Air Con / Fan Problem

oh dear, so what you're saying is that not only is the fan (switch) screwed but also there is a bigger problem.... I feel another costly trip to vw coming on
  3. Hi, My fan seems to have stopped working on setting 1. This is rather annoying as the aircon only works when the fan is on setting 1....... Can anyone tell me, is this a problem with the switch or something more nasty? Presumably the switch will be cheap to replace. Cheers ps. I Haven't set my brakes on fire again since my last post : )
  4. There's no smoke without fire : ) yes I know the difference between oxidation and combustion
  5. I have set my brakes on fire a couple of times. Kind of F1 style, after doing heavy braking and then having to sit at lights. The first was a bit of a break test, I broke down from 70mph in little more than 100m and as I sat at the lights a few whisps of smoke came out from the arches accompanied by a strange and fairly unpleasant smell. The second was after doing a lot of downhill braking with the car fully loaded with stuff and then having to sit at some lights at the bottom of the hill. Just wondering if anyone else has managed this? I think that I will be getting some better brakes soon : ) ps VR6
  6. Its completely your choice. 95 is the minimum the VR6 should be given and it won't cause any damage to your engine. However, 97 gives a noticeable performance increase and 98 gives more so. There isn't much difference between Q8 98 and Shell Optimax (98) in terms of performance, although my friend (who has a VR6) and I have found that Q8 98 gives slightly better fuel economy in winter. Once I filled up with Optimax and then put a ron booster additive into the tank : ) In theory, this made the fuel up to 100 RON. The Corrado sounded really growly and had better low down torque. Power is so hard to judge so I can't comment on that. It cut out twice after slowing down, stopping at lights and putting it in neutral, but it was generally a very enjoyable experience! In germany Shell do V-Power, which is 100 RON. Lucky German B@stards!!!!
  7. Thanks for all the replies everyone. Last night I was walking home when a new Porsche turbo passed me slowing down with lots of rude gurgling noises coming from the exhaust. If a new turbo does it then I'm not worried about my Corrado doing it!!!!
  8. I have to say that I don't think it only happens when its hot. Also my golf made similar sounds. I hear lots of sports cars making the same type of sound and I don't think it has anything to do with a leaky downpipe. Does anyone have any other ideas?
  9. So is it a problem? I didn't think it was.
  10. Can anyone explain what the gurgling and occasional popping noise made from the exhaust on the overrun is? I had a VR6 golf and it made a similar type of noise and you hear Scoobies make it a lot. Cheers Chris
  11. no no no!! Lowering to that level doesn't give a drivers car.. You say it only rubs when driving hard but thats what you bought the car for, isn't it?? You don't need any lowering to make it handle like a dream, just a decent balanced setup.

    Optimum fuel

I had a golf vr6 before I bought the Corrado. I was a little dissapointed with the Corrados performance when I test drove it. I took it to the garage and put some super in it (98 ron) and it drove like I expected. The guy who had it before used 95ron fuel. Shell Optimax is 98 ron which is what makes the difference, forget the sales sh!t, it simply has more energy in it, period. It makes the VR6 engine more responsive and gives more torque. Q8 also do a a super unleaded which is no different to Optimax in my opinion. I use Shell Helix in my C, its very smooth and seems fine although officially you should use a semi-synth oil and I wouldn't dare reccomend anything else : )

    Adjustable headlights

Thanks everyone for the replies, I guess there's no more headlight adjusters for me... Oh well, thats 2 less motors in the car so a bit of weight saved : ) For reference, the headlight adjusters moved the lamps up/down AND left/right which was useful for all the little roads I used to drive round in Europe. I have included a picture of the adjuster dials in the car.
  14. Hi, I have just had the lenses changed on my VR6 to convert them from the Euro LHD spec for the UK. The problem is that the garage have told me that the headlights are no longer adjustable using the controls on the dashboard!! They have told me that uk spec corrados do not have this feature and so they couldn't make the adjuters work. This sound like a lie to me, please can someone confirm that their UK spec VR6 has the headlight adjustment controls so that I can go back to them and demand they do this properly. Thanks
