Mk4 Golf Brakes conversion

Recommended Posts

I have come across a 2003 Mk 4 non turbo Golf GTI in a breakers.

I am going to have the rear calipers, as its a very late car will the discs be okay for my VR too?

My understanding is they will fit complete, anyone know what size they are? I only really want them because of the new calipers.

If the car's in a scrappers the discs are likely to be rusted beyond further use. I thought the MK4 calipers were a straight swap for the Corrado ones, just requiring new MK4 rear brake hoses to make them fit ??

Steve, thats my understanding, I was just hoping the discs were in good nick to save me buying new ones.

Any more than 2-3 weeks out in the elements & the discs are likely to have a fair amount of corrosion on them. If you want to re-use them, get them asap.

if using the MK4 rear disc then you need the MK4 rear pads, the disc is thinner and the pads wider than standard fitment. If you you your existing discs and MK4 calipers then use MK3 GTI/VR6 rear pads - they have the best sized thickness for correct fitment

Have a search on here, Kev did it recently

Yep, thats what I've just got, If you want the pagid fast roads, use the ones listed for the Corrado without ABS (same thickness as the late mk3's)

Now I'm really confused, ignoring the choice of pads for a second.

I Looked on ETKA and the hubs are totally different, Corrado has Wheel bearing in the disc and Golf in the hub. That would suggest the discs are not interchangeable. If the hubs are the same width and the holes line up on the axle, can I use the Golf 4 hub and disc assembley on the Corrado axle?

Has this been done before? Have I lost the plot? :-P

Steve, you were right the discs are a really fetching shade of brown. Will a quick skim not resurrect them?

As for the hoses anyone know where to get these, I need a full set front and rear?

Storm, So far as I know - we stock the flexi hoses, although I have no idea what the part numbers would be.

It will probably cost you as much to skim the discs as it would to replace them.

Get goodridge hoses if you need them all round, they'll be about the same price as buying the OE ones.. the rear conversion ones are about £20 for the pair, new Corrado rear discs are about £17 from VAG, a bit less from GSF....

I'm having the Brembo rears from GSF, makes sense its a great brand. I've mailed C&R about the hoses, anywhere else, or is that the best place?

Oh and thanks for the help fella's.
