WoodyG60 0 Posted October 14, 2004 My G60 has had electric problems for a while now - originally it "stuttered" after being driven hard, then would cut out altogether - strong smell of petrol too! My garage (after much faffing about) found that the voltage to the distributor was too low - 3v rather than 9v, and eventually changed the fuse box. I've just driven it home this morning and the stuttering has gone - only now the car cut out completely when being driven hard & the rev counter mysteriously stops working intermittently. Also the car failed to start (starting motor did turn) until the engine cools completely. Any thoughts about what the problem could be? Ta, WoodyG60 :(
Henny 0 Posted October 15, 2004 try another coil on the car... it could be that it's breaking down with heat (it's sat directly over the exhaust manifold so gets somewhat hot! ) which causes your problems... :| Also check the other usual suspects such as the earth strap between the battery, chassis and gearbox (all one cable) to make sure it's not gone green and therefore high resistance: The throttle body to ECU vacuum pipe which MUST be 100cm long, and, as you can smell petrol, check the fuel pipes... there's 2 on the left of the engine as you look at it from the front, and one on the right which comes from the fuel rail and goes upto the fuel pressure switch... Did changing the fuse box sort the voltage problem to the dizzy? That points at something a little odd in itself, as the fuseboxes on Corrados are pretty bombproof 'cos VW learnt after being stung with lots of problems with MKI Golf fuseboxes... :| Good luck... And Welcome to The Forum... 8)
WoodyG60 0 Posted October 15, 2004 Thanks, I've just been in touch with the garage - apparently the distributor was on its way out. Not sure in what way, buts its out on test just now so I'm hoping to pick it up later on - and of course test it thoroughly myself at the weekend. Can't wait - its been in the garage for a month!!! Henny 0 Posted October 15, 2004 if they've changed the dizzy, don't let them try and tell you that it's a G60 only part... it's not, it's exactly the same as the 8V Golf GTI ones and shouldn't cost you more than £80 for a geunine new Bosch part... 8) Sounds like it's a likely possible cause though... they are known to break down over time and would give the kind of symptoms you described... 8) Hope it's cured for you... 8)
WoodyG60 0 Posted October 16, 2004 Bingo! Problem sorted - turns out I had two problems - dodgy fusebox & distributor. Explains why the problem was so difficult to find! Just had the car out - now running like a dream!! Cheers for your help, Woody
