Leather Steering Wheel Refurbishment

Recommended Posts

I bought a used VR6 leather steering wheel off ebay last week to replace my 'plastic' one but unfortunately upon receiving it, it looks like it's been 'scalped' down the right-hand side! It seems to have lost the top surface of the leather. I've applied loads of leather conditioner to it and it is looking much better but still not right. Does anyone know what else I can do? Do I need to somehow have it re-surfaced? Does anyone know anywhere that offers this and how much I'd be looking at? Prior to bidding on the wheel, I checked the price of a new leather steering wheel from the dealers and it was £366!! So even if it costs a bit to get mine resurfaced it will probably be worth it.

No way!! I would just scrap that wheel, and just put it down to experience. Look for another wheel on ebay, use the one you have for a while and just be patient, they are always popping up, look under golf MK3 GTI/VR6 too, same wheel. I found mine, which cost £42 and it is in mint condition, no scratches, wear or anything. Would be cheaper than recovering it surely. Good luck.

as leather is just animal skin its not really possible to re-surface it as its not a synthetic surface

just had a search on tinternet and found these it says for lotus but they may do others and it seems very cheap http://www.bell-colvill.co.uk/Shop/Deta ... ?Id=BCMS27

you could also try contacting other wheel manufacturers and classic car restorers as most classic cars at the shows have had the wheel re-trimmed

i might try doing this myself on my old mountney 12" wheel from the bond bug just to see how hard it actually is as seats seemed quite easy

Joe (someone) can do Steering wheels for £130 he has just done my BBS Wheel for me. Proper job he did to !!!. You can contact him through John Mitchell 16vG60 on this forum. I will post a pick of his work later on today. The reason it cost so much compared to other parts is you cant use a machine all of the stiching has to done by hand.

Maybe I'll just have to put it down to experience and see if I can get another one on eBay. Just a bit miffed that the description of the steering wheel was: 'Slighty worn, but still in good condition', no mention that it had been 'scalped'! It looked ok in the picture, you could see it had some wear but not to the extent of it's real condition.
