Heated Rear Screen/ Heated Mirrors Fuse keeps blowing.

Recommended Posts

After this 20 amp fuse blew 3 times, I took my car to an auto electrician. They couldn't find anything wrong and advised to uprate the fuse to 25 amps.Things have been fine for three weeks!.......until now.....its blown again.

I am correct in saying that the ABS sensors run on the same circuit???

No - ABS has a seperate fuse.

The fuse that keeps blowing (fuse no.9) should be a 20a fuse. If this blows - you have an electrical fault. Increasing the size of the fuse is not a good idea (risk of fire). I would suggest that you use a multimeter & find the source of your problem. Sounds like you have a short circuit somewhere.

You have a very ill-advised auto electrician. I would advise you to take your car to one who knows what he's doing.

No new electrical equipement has been fitted.Phoned the auto electrian today and he insists that the ABS is on the same circuit but not on the same fuse  ????

Told me to brake hard whilst the heated rear screen is on and this should blow the fuse (if the problem lies with the ABS)!

Not been out yet but will keep you posted.

Suggest you have the electrician sitting in passenger seat without seatbelt on when you do the brake test. It might break your windscreen (you probably could do with a new one), but at least you won't hear any more cr@p....

CandyWhite16v, ABS is a safety related feature & for this reason alone should not share electrical circuits with any other device. The ABS fuses reside in seperate fuse holders above the fusebox.

There will be a 30a fuse for the ABS pump relay & a 30a fuse for the main ABS relay. (according to my owners handbook)

So far as I can see - the sensors aren't fused - just the relays.

I suggest that you sack your autoelectrician & get one who knows what he's talking about !!

Yeah point taken.Tried braking hard with the heated screen on and it does appear that he is talking bollocks!.Put a 20 amp fuse back in and will try a VW specialist next time I am passing.

CandyWhite16v, I'll find a heated mirror & rear screen wiring diagram for you. I haven't got one specifically for the 2.0-16v but I have one for the VR6 (same interior/switches).

BTW - If you ever have a problem with the ABS, the warning light on the dashboard will come on.

Been having window related electrical problems but stumbled across a set of PDF files on a German Corrado enthusiast site. They're in English but don't know how accurate they are. Maybe someone else has seen them before. Be interested if someone could verify how accurate they are.
