A few Novice questions....

Recommended Posts

Just bought a Corrado (2.0 16V 1994). Would be great to have some advice on the following problems (please forgive the simplicity, I'm not very technicial....yet)

1. The lights behind the heating/vent dials on the dash don't work, nor the light in the glovebox - is this fuse related or bulbs?

2. In general, whats the best way to go about getting spare parts? Any one know of any reliable, reasonable VW servicing in london (preferably west-ish)?

3. Spare wheel - the car has 17" alloys on it. The spare is a 13" space saver. Not knowing anything about this, can i put a 13" wheel on temporarily as a spare with all the other wheels much larger?

4. Does the coolant have to be the exact one in the manual - anyone have an opinion on this?

Thats it! Thanks for any help/info.

1) the bulb in the glovebox will only work with the ignition (and lights IIRC) on, so check that first, and then check the bulb. The one behind the heater dials will be the bulb...

2) spare parts are available from LOTS of different places, don't know of any servicing places in London, but you could try John down at JMRacing (16VG60 on this forum) who's down in Rustington and is exceptional with Corrados... 8)

3) As long as this space saver fits over the brakes you have, it should be fine to use as an emergency spare... don't go over 45mph, don't expect the car to handle properly or brake anywhere near as well as on 4 good wheels, but at least it'll get you home! 8)

4) Coolant should be VWs own G12+. The coolant in the handbook will say G11, but this has now been replaced with G12+ by VW. It's important that you get G12+, not just standard G12 as the non-plus stuff won't mix with your existing coolant and may well end up causing a lot of damage to your engine.

Welcome to The Forum... 8)

The bulb for the heater controls is behind the middle of the three dials and lights all three (well, sort of). Pull the rotary control off gently, all that stuff is a bit flimsy and easily cracked.

Spares from German Swedish and French (known as GSF) which has branches all over the place , or Eurocar Parts in Wembley. Stevemac on this forum will advise you on the nearest GSF, as he is one of their managers. VAG parts tend to be a lot more expensive, but in some cases are of significantly better quality than "pattern" parts.

Expect to become a lot more technically adept in the short-term future, out of necessity !! Your first two mods., if they haven't already been done, are

1) Lupo windscreen wipers and,

2) a relay controlled headlight wiring loom.

Both are covered in the most intricate detail in the "Sticky" section at the front of the Forum, and will enable you actually to see where you are going in the dark/rain/both.

Best wishes, and welcome.
