16V ENGINE NOISES

FIRST POST SO HERE GOES,

I HAVE JUST BOUGHT A 91 16V'R AND WAS WONDERING IF ENGINE NOISE IS A COMMON PROBLEM. THE CAR HAS BEEN PRETTY GOOD SINCE BOUGHT (NO OIL USAGE, COOLANT LEAK ETC) BUT HAS STARTED MAKING A NOISE AS IF IT TRYING TO IMPERSONATE A DIESEL.

TRYING TO PIN POINT WHEN THIS HAPPENED IS TOUGH AS I HAVE SERVICED THE CAR AND HAD THE TIMING BELT CHANGED IN THE LAST MONTH. THE CAR ONLY HAD 79K WHEN BOUGHT AND HAD A PRETTY MUCH FULL VAG HISTORY (WITH STAMPS AND EVERYTHING). THERE IS NO LOSS IN PERFORMANCE AND THE NOISE IS ONLY REALLY ANNOYING WHEN AT IDLE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED AND IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A GOOD GARAGE IN CENTRAL SCOTLAND THAT WOULD BE OF HELP TOO.

If the engine's just suddenly got a lot louder, I'd go with a blowing exhaust being the problem. Star Performance gets good reviews from all the Scottish people on here, but I have no idea where they are...

thanks henny, the noise doesnt seem to be an exhaust noise but more an engine noise. i cant even give more details as with work and the fact it is dark at about 4.30 it will be the weekend before i get a look at it.

 

just another thing for what its worth, i was pretty impressed with the corrado when i got it. i have had a mk1 golf gti for 7 odd years(which i still have) but the corrado is by far a more modern drive. although you need to ring the neck out the 16v for some speed it is very good on the motor way and alot easier to live with.

hope to have a corrado for some time.

Going from my own experiences, with my valver, since I bought her in October last year I've suffered with two/three different noises from the engine. The first being the cambelt tensioner. Did yours get changed when the belt was done? Then it was the water pump, sounded like a pigeon was trapped under the bonnet. And the final noise was due to broken cambelt covers!

i am thinking cambelt more and more. the tensioner should have been done but i am pretty sceptical. i will check it out and let you know how i get on.

right, if it's not an exhaust note there are 4 other common noise areas on the 1.8 16V to be aware of.

 

1) Cambelt tensioner (as kerrinmay, points out)

2) Waterpump - you'd tend to notice this as they tend to spring a leak when they go

3) alternator bearings - put a screwdriver tip on the outer casing while the engine is running and then put your ear to the handle. This acts as a stethoscope so you can work out if it's the alternator making the noise... (TAKE CARE! This can project a LOT of noise straight into your ear, so put the screwdriver onto the alternator first and then put your ear near to the handle, not the other way around! Oh, and make sure you get the screwdriver the right way around!!! ;) :lol: )

4) There's an idler pulley on SOME 1.8 16Vs which one of the belts (I think it's the P/S belt) goes around and is attached to the waterpump. There's a thin brass insert which acts as a bearing inside the idler pulley which breaks down and causes one hell of a noise when it dies... not difficult to change, but the part is slightly painful to buy from VAG...

thanks a million this should get it cleared up, the prices from vag are pretty frightning but some off the service i have had from them is even worse. an argument with one guy who told me they didnt make a 1800 mk1 golf hopefully the worst.

water pump,

 

its making a right old racket, i got the local garage to confirm this which they did. they are quoting £120 to fit a new one is this about right or is it easy enough to do yourself if so is there anything i should look out for.

Pump is not too bad to do, but you've got to get past the alternator and bracket and then PS pump and brackets first, bit of a fiddle and time consuming. Worst bit I found was getting the pulley off the old pump and onto the new one without damaging the pulley itself, the hex bolts can be a pain to get undone, or at least the last one is when you have nothing else to lever against and you can easily damage the pulley with mole grips etc..

Worth having a good read of a haynes golf or passat manual first.

You'll need a 13 and 17mm socket + a ratchet and extension bar, probably a 17mm ring spanner and it's best to have an allen key type hex socket for the pulley bolts.

Good time to change your thermostat too as they are v-cheap but difficult to get at without doing all the above. Get all full pump, not just the impeller.
