Yet another suspension question

I've taken my VR6 into the local VW specialist (not dealer) to have a look at why the car leans to one side. Nothing has broken, but the springs have weakened causing it to lean. The car's done 108,000 miles so not too much of surprise. They've suggested that I get it lowered (which I agree with, as I've always though the standard set up looks odd that high) and have given me a cuple of options. Lowering springs (can't remember the cost) or a full Sachs sports kit at £280 + VAT + labour.

 

Questions :

Is that a good price?

Is that a good option?

How will it affect the handling?

Less understeer?

Is handling in the wet governed more by tyres than the suspension?

 

I'll probably never take it on a track so don't need anything too severe. I don't want the ride to be too harsh, but I want to see a difference from the standard setup but don't really know what to expect.

The kit sounds what you are looking for. The cheapish sets of around £300 do lower the car and will firm the ride up enough for you to notice. Understeer etc will be affected by your camber etc but in general the car will handle better.

In the wet it kinda depends on your tyres. Find out what springs they are using. I think Sachs are just the same as Boge which I have always found to be ok.

coullstar, You're correct m8 - Sachs & Boge are exactly the same company. :wink:

 

briggy, Go for the full kit - just fitting lowering springs onto your original struts is rarely a good idea.

Just been quoted H+R springs and Boge Turbo Gas dampers for £469 inc

vat and fitting from Stealth.

 

Anyone else using this set up?

Yeah - height adjustable - I think damping adjustable ones are available too, more expensive though.

 

No, they're damping adjustable and the rear legs have a movable spring baseplate 2-5 positions depending on whether the rears are the cheaper adjustable damping off the car or top adjustable, I think all front Konis that fit corrados are top adjustable and only the coilover kits are front ride height adjustable. took me ages to sort out which ones to get as they list about 6 for the corrado, depending on whether you want standard ride height, pre 92 cars or just front inserts and not the whole leg.

Should be able to source 4 damping adjustable konis and H&R springs for under 500 quid, fitting extra.
