gibber 0 Posted March 22, 2005 Need help, I noticed when I got to work this morning that my engine had develeped a rattle or should I say I loud knocking. I have just managed to go and have a look and it is coming from the charger, aircon pump or maybe the water pump. The car drove fine this morning, boosted up fine. gave it a bit on the hill before work. Question is am I safe to drive it home or is it my charger about to pop? gibber 0 Posted March 22, 2005 Right I just spoke to g-man, so I off outside to check a few things!
Henny 0 Posted March 22, 2005 Firstly, don't start the engine again until you've worked out what this is... :| Take out the airbox. Remove the cover off the top of the alternator which covers the pulley/belt. With a large screwdriver (or 2 ;) ) lever up the tensioner arm and remove the alternator/waterpump/supercharger belt Now turn the alternator, G60 and waterpump pulleys by hand and see if which is causing the rattle... Good luck! :|
Supercharged 2 Posted March 22, 2005 And check the Cambelt
gibber 0 Posted March 22, 2005 Belt off, started engine and no knocking. So on my engine that puts it down to the charger, alternator or or aircon pump. Charger spins fine with no tite spots, alternator spins freely. as does the aircon! so Im not the wiser. The 2 plastic pulleys have a bit of play in them but I cant see them causing a knocking! Im going to try and limp it home now with out the alt. Lucky for me the water pump is run od the v belt with it being factory aircon. Any more ideas?????? Henny 0 Posted March 22, 2005 stick the belt back on, start it up and listen to find out where the knocking's coming from... If you're sure the charger feels OK, with no tight spots and no play (up/down, forwards/back and in/out of the charger!) in the pulley that is... Take a good look at the bottom crankshaft pulley to make sure it's not buckled, if it is it could be the crank bolt is about to let go... :|
Cougar 0 Posted March 22, 2005 UNLESS that knock is a piece of the charger cog belt flapping around! It would feel fine on hand turn but won't last long driving.
gibber 0 Posted March 22, 2005 Ian I have spoke to Gavin (H100VW) and we think it would be best to wip the charger off and seperate it rather than risk starting it again. When I spoke to Darren (G-man) he said it could be a colasped bearing and I have heard it just in time. Then when I can rule out the expencive bit I will put the belt back on! Cougar charger belts are both fine!
h100vw 0 Posted March 22, 2005 Yeah, only a 20 minute job to remove a charger. I did one tonight  Let me know what you find inside. Gavin
