Power steering

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Today ive bought some new PS fluid for my G/F's 90 valver cos the fluid in there now is really really black

Two questions for you before I start tomorrow

1 - Have I bought the right fluid - I got 1 litre of Bilstien Febi M6162 the guy in GSF said it was the correct one for VW's but I just wanna make sure as ive heard that the wrong stuff will damage the seals in the pump :(

2 - How much fluid is there in the system - I just want to make sure all the old stuff is out (It looks like treacle  )

All help appreciated :D

Thanks J

whats the best way to drain all the old fluid off?

just undo the ps pump filler hose (jubilee clip), it all drains from the pump, reservoir and most of the hoses.

When I re-filled mine I read the Haynes advice on priming the pump with fluid before operating, but as soon as you connect the pump feed hose and add fluid to the reservoir it runs straight through anyway.

Just start the engine, wind the steeering from lock to lock several times till it quietens down and top up the reservoir.

David.

Well the rain stopped for a bit this afternoon so I got it all done inc the PS + Alt belts 8)

I put the new fluid in and went from fulllock to fulllock a few times as i was told this would bleed the system, then started the car up and the PS pump made a god awful sound and I thought id broken it  Took the car for a spin and its gone quite again so I think it was just air in the system
