is a torque wrench needed when changing steering wheel?

alrighty peeps

 

my mate rekons you are supposed to use a torque wrench when putting a steering wheel back on?? cant see it meself but thought id check as im changing my 16v wheel for a vr6 jobbie at the weekend???

i never have mate, just a socket set should do the trick! oh, and making sure your wheels are straight when you put the steering back help too :D

The torque setting is 40Nm (30ft lb). So not too tight., just nip up and 1 hour on the 12 hour clock face forced. 24mm socket with short extension.

Well RW1 is quite correct and it's a sensible question but come on, just change it and nip the nylock nut up using a little sense, i was surprised that anyone needed to ask this question but i suppose i shouldn't think like this if you have no mechanical reference at all.

cheers, yep i dont have the slightest clue about mechanics !! the rado is the first car that ive ever tinkered with - all my other cars have been late - ish models that are better just sent down the garage.

Like RW1 says there is a torque setting but it's no problem if you don't have a wrench, torque is not crucial as the wheel sits on a spline, just to it up as tight as you can by hand with a normal size ratchet (like you do with the wheel nuts and factory brace), 24mm as Mr One states.

Chris VR6nos, the nut isn't Nylock btw...
