16v Cooling fan

Before jumping in the car this fine morning i noticed the cooling fan was on. Battery flat, Girlfriends car for work we all know the script. It was totally soaking the night before and the car had done a pretty good job getting through some big puddles (small lakes) so i'm thinking this has something to do with it. I have a spare battery but any help would be appreciated. The car has never had any electrical problems before and even some advice as to get the car mobile would be usefull.

prob not the same thing, but a few years ago i had an escort van. 2am, the alarm went off, went and had a look and noticed the fan was on setting the alarm off. disconected the lead to the fan, spoke to ford who were useless, every garage told me different.

 

mate who i bought my corrado off of, said there was a relay for the fan, replaced that for £10 and bingo, worked perfect!!!

there's a thin brown wire with a white trace on it that'll be up near the cylinder head/fuel system somewhere. It should be connected to a brass looking bolt which is actually a temp sensor. It's this which controls the fan run-on via a relay. Check that this wire hasn't come loose and isn't touching anything metal as this will leave the fan on permanently. Also there IS a relay for the fan run on which is worth checking. It's either bolted to the front of the expansion tank (if you have ABS) or the wiring is behind the glovebox (if you don't have ABS) where the ABS brain would normally hide.
