BoddersG60 0 Posted December 20, 2005 Hi everyone, I have a K-reg G60 and it seems to be using a lot of water and the oil filler cap is starting to get a creamy white substance on it. Is the head gasket going? Can anyone tell me approximately how much it would cost to change? Cheers folks (this is my virgin post so please be gentle :) )
Blue_Joe 0 Posted December 20, 2005 hello and welcome! Depends if you've got the skills to do it yourself! The gasket is about £20 from GSF for an Elring gasket. If not it's gonna sting a bit!
steveo29 0 Posted December 20, 2005 could also be a failing oil cooler
Supercharged 2 Posted December 20, 2005 Yep, deffo check the water/heat exchanger first... it's the square shaped thing the oil filter screws into...
h100vw 0 Posted December 20, 2005 The heat exchanger is worth a change out first as said above. A lot less messing about. In my experience the G60 head gasket blows in a big way. Gavin
olly elworthy 0 Posted December 20, 2005 when the heat exchanger goes you useually get oil in the coolant as the oil pressure is allot greater than the water pressure,,,,,
KarmannVR6 0 Posted December 20, 2005 Best way to tell if the head gasket is going is to do a compression test. A garage wont charge you much for this, alternetivly buy a compression tester and do it yourself, they cost about 15 quid. I would recommend doing this before you shell out on parts. h100vw 0 Posted December 20, 2005 Not a complete test of it's integrity. Also, you can do a 'sniff' test of the coolant for combustion products. Gavin
BoddersG60 0 Posted December 21, 2005 Cheers for the help everyone. I'll get a compression check done and also check out the heat exchanger.
