Protecting alloys laquer from brake dust

What's the best way of stopping brake dust burning through the laquer on alloy wheels? I always seem to trash mine within a few years, clean them fairly regularly but the dust seams to eat into the laquer, and once there that's it.

 

Is there a protective coating that can be sprayed on or something?

The best way to look after alloys is the same way you look after paint. People wax and wax and wax bodywork but never wheels. At the end of the day its just paint and lacquer and should be treated in exactly the same way. When you wash you car, wash your wheels, when you wax and polish your car, wax and polish your wheels. Easy :)

I just use that all-in-one shampoo and polish stuff, and must admit when I do polish the car I've never done the wheels. Sort of assumed they were coated with harder wearing laquer.

 

So do I need wax and not polish, or are they the same?

You should only need to "polish" once every few months if at all. You should "wax" as often as possible. Polish is actually an abrasive which removes the wax and any road dirt. Wax is what protects the paint.

Cool, just as well I don't polish my car much. :) Will have to invest in some of that wax then, hopefully got some decent wheels turning up and want them to stay like it.
