If the sound is like metal bearings being shook in a metal can, it could be your timing and the engine is pinking.

If it is just a rattle - sounds more like a loose heat-shield and the vibrations at 2,500rpm just happen to make the metal resonate, and would be solved by some tightening, if you can find it!

Sounds like you need your ignition timing checked.

Can be done DIY if you know someone with the timing light.

(P.S. I think it's ignition timing, not cam timing that needs checking. Apologies if I'm wrong, but I have a stinking cold and details aren't my forté at the moment!)

Yes, the distributor controls the ignition timing AFAIK. Or at least, it can be altered there.

Guys - this may be just a Heatsheild rattle at a certain frequency....

check underneath the car as a friend revs the engine, CAT heatshield is the fav but there are several more that become loose and rattle...

Agreed, pinking generally occurs at range of revs, but just one very specific point.

And re-reading the first post - pinking should only occur under load - and the rattle is when not-moving too.

Shouldn't be pinking as the G60 has a anti-knock sensor which would automatically retard the timing.

G60 timing check or adjustment must be done after disconnecting the blue temp sensor while the engine is running. This will disable the corrective timing controlled by the ECU.

If it is pinking then you have a fault either with the blue temp sensor or the anti-knock sensor/cable. Blue temp sensor can be checked by connecting the plug to the black temp sensor instead - it this cures the fault then you need a new blue temp sensor. If your engine cuts out while you're disconnecting the blue temp sensor then your timing requires adjusting.

Timing should be set to 6 degrees BTDC (7 degrees if using Optimax)

it sounds like it comeing from inside the rock cover do the g60 have thecover inside like the mk2 golfs

They do, strangly someone else asked about this the other week - they are meant to be loose and won't make enough noise to be heard (only plastic)

Have you looked at the heatshields yet?? - the noise can sound like its coming from up front as the sound comes through the manifold.

Check the rubber mount for the ISV they basically give up and allow the isv to hit the rocker cover, dealer only part but they are as cheap as chips and the part number is on it.

tell me about it - he wanted £30 inc vat for the throttle position switch too, despite Duncan getting his from a dealer for £14 inc.

He also got arsey on the phone when I said all that he picked out of stores I didn't want because it was wrong :)

Found the blue temp sensor for £7.45 ex-vat in eurocarparts so gonna grab it from there and talking to my local specialist about the throttle switch - I recon any micro switch would do. In which case 75p from maplin but I'd like to make sure first :)

new cam belt + rattle normally means dead/dying Cam tensioner!

They're about £20 new from VAG (cheaper elsewhere!)

The tensioner bolts onto the side of the head (cambelt side!) and has a habbit of failing causing odd noises and sometimes breaking belts when they seize up.... :?

Definately worth checking out if it's a top end noise... 8)

Have you timing checked (as per previous post). If your cambelt has been replaced, the lower cambelt plastic cover may be damaged or not re-attached correctly. This will rattle against the waterpump and/or tensioner pulley.

Damaged knock sensor (mounted to front of engine and has thick black cable coming from it) will cause your engine to "pink" and loose power. Maybe just a coincidence but 2500rpm is the engine speed used when setting the timing.

When was your supercharger last serviced/reconditioned ??

I would have your timing checked/corrected and see if the problem persists.
