G60 rad fan

Recommended Posts

Hi all on a G60 do any relays work with the rad fan? Just trying to isolate my probs yesterday. Car now has good waterflow although this is due to running with no Thermostat. Its going for its MOT on Monday and I would like the fan working really.

I did a bulb test on my old rad switch today..ie wire up a 12v bulb to the bat and switch and see if it flows current to the bulb. It did not. So gonna pull my new switch in the morning and run same test.

Cheers supercharged.

I was wondering as there is a rack of relays above the fusepanel. Down by the pedals. None have names and the owners manual gives no insite to any of them.

I'll take alook behind the glovebox tomorrow.

Do you think it could be a relay causing the fan to not operate? It works fine if I bridge the connections. The rad is up to temp and the rad switch is obviousley hot but no fan.

If you have another fan switch and a pot of boiling water why not try activating the fan with these methods. plug the loom into the new switch and then put it into the boiling water. this is definatly let you know if its just your existing fan switch at fault.

Good one the Gman. Yep will try that also. Is there any No on the relays that works with the fan? There is no way I can take the car out without the rad fan working. It gets to hot esp in this weather.

Will have more answers later today.

Well no relays behind the glovebox? Car does not have ABS.

only relays are with fuse's. Any of these work with the cooling fan?

Picking up a 2nd new rad switch in a bit also.

Update

Tested new rad switch in boiling water. Car running no fan action :x Totally confused now.. Can anybody help..

Fan works fine if I short the connections??

Tested new rad switch in boiling water.

Was it definitely boiling? Isn't the operating temperature of the fan switch slightly above boiling...like 105 degrees? If the fan works with shorted connections and the fan switch is new then I'd say it's fine.

Is that stage 1 at that temp ? 105° where does stage 2 kick in? I guess just a bit worried about blowing the head ect. Such a lot of work in the last 4 months. MOT today!!

The temp gauge would ne better if it was like a Ford Escorts. Where in the middle of the gauge it sez Normal haha

Had exactly the same thing. I'd never seen/heard my fan running and I had a duff water temp gauge. So I got a new switch, plugged in the loom and stuck it in boiling water. No fan action :( Shorting the connections worked.

I got my water temp gauge working and it never went over 100 and just the other day (a hot day stuck in traffic) the water temp gauge got over 100. I pulled up at home and the fan was running :D

I can only assume I've just never got it up to temp before (I've got an oil cooler, but I can't imagine that would make so much difference).

What does your temp gauge read when you think you should get the fan kicking in, but it doesn't?

Hi to the both of ya...

My car failed its first MOT today after a 5 month rebuild. So I had a chance to take it on the Rd. Two n from the MOT. My Oil cooler worked a treat. Max temp was 98°. Well impressed with that. Not bothered about the fail really. only minor stuff. Pleased with all the work I have done.

As for fan. The tester said it did kick in. When running the emmisions test. They have to get it up to temp. I was told on the forum that Stage 1 should kick in around halfway on the gauge and 2 higher on the gauge???

I removed the heat exchanger when I fitted the Mocal cooler. Removing the old waterbased heat exchanger will drop water temps. The heat from the oil is not being disapated to the water system..

Do any relays work with the cooling fan??
