searider 0 Posted July 24, 2006 Anyone know where I can get a good quality reconditioned / remanufactured gearbox. I know that there will be local "gearbox centre" type places but is there anyone specialising in remanufacturing VW boxes to a good quality rather than to a low price. Looks like the diff in my VR6 is getting noisy (160000 miles) and rather than just open it up and replace the "broken" bits I feel that a complete gearbox would be a better bet due to the mileage and the fact that all of it might be in need of a "freshen up" £1100 + VAT from VW though :( Cheers all
Supercharged 2 Posted July 24, 2006 Welcome to the forum... Vince at Stealth Racing is the man for gearboxes... IIRC he does a VR box rebuild for £550 + vat but anything broken will be charged for on top... Worth giving him a call as he often has spares kicking about thop and may do you a trade in depending on the condition of yours... At 160k miles an a VR i'd be seriouslly thinking about getting the clutch and timing chanins done if the box is coming off!
Henny 0 Posted July 25, 2006 ...and an LSD fitted while it's in bits to get the power onto the road a bit better... ;)
searider 0 Posted April 21, 2007 Turns out it wasn't the diff. When the oil was drained out it was clean. Changed all wheel bearings - noise still there. Changed the front tyres and all quiet again! Moral of the story - don't move Toyo Proxes T1S from the rear to the front!
