Low temp guage reading = rich fueling

Recommended Posts

My 1.8 16v is far far to rich, i'm getting tops low 20's on motorway driving, and approx 15 round town! the exhaust fumes smell way to rich, and is popping like crazy (I think this is unburnt fuel, but correct me if wrong)

I've noticed though that on motorway driving, the temp guage barely reaches 70c which is right near the bottom of the guage, as soon as I get round town or in traffic the guage seems normal, so not 100% if this is a problem.

Just thought I'd check with you lot before I go leaning of the mixture a bit, will get set up on machine as soon as can, but need to get this a little better for now.

Just tried to turn the fuel mixture anti clockwise half turn, took it round block about 2 miles for quick test, its mainly 40mph roads, I was driving as sensibly as possible trying not to stop start to much and I had 14.9 mpg by the time I got back !!!!

So far on 2 full takes I've worked it out as an average 22ish, showing 2 more than MFA

Right last night I turned the mixture half a turn anti clockwise, and this morning the readings were worse!

I couldn't get above 10 round town, I then reset it when I got on motorway and after 10 miles sitting between 65-75mph I had 17.7mpg

bearing in mind i've worked out that I get approx 2 more than the MFA reads.

I'm sure after searching on here I read that allen key must be turned anti clockwise, but it must be the other way !

I have a feeling my mixture screw is missing...! The allen key doesn't seem to fit in there correctly, and I cant see anything in the hole with a torch... looks like there is another smaller hole in there.

Anybody missing one of these before?
