Front wheel bearings ****UPDATE*****

Recommended Posts

Hello, having my wheel bearings changed on the Front O/S on the Corrado this Friday, I got the part number 1H0498625 from VW today (thanks to the forum for the part No)

1H0498625 this is the right part Number yes? Paid 83 Euro Inc vat (£56) sound about right?

Also the garage I am taking it to, its not my first choice, but I don’t want to drive the car too far, its making the worst noise ever from the wheel in question, what do I need to say to them?

I know it needs to be pressed and the hub needs to come off, how long should it take? And what needs to happen after? Some kind of wheel alignment?

So I guess what I am asking is what the whole process involve?

Cheers guys&girls!

I've just bought 1 Front wheel bearing and 2 rears. Got them all from GSF and can't remeber the make but they are made by the people that make them for VW.....................

Hate to say it fella but they were a fraction of that price!

I don't see how a bearing can be £56. I got a rear one recently and it wasn't anything like that much. Again it wasn't genuine VW though. Does anyone know if its true about bearings needing to be VW? I'm concerned now that mine ain't good enough.

Sorry to say the garage will prob cost quite a lot too as they have to take the disc off and press it in like you say (don't know any more than that I'm afraid)

Not being much help at all really am I.

That bearing is £29+vat over here retail but they pay alot more for parts over there...

If GSF can supply SKF bearings then fair enough but i've never managed to get any out of them even when i've specifically ordered that make....

The wheel bearings that were fitted to the TDI when the conversion was done 2 years/30k miles ago were GSF and all completly failed - getting new fronts fitted made such a difference!

Yes, that's the right part number - just had both mine done.

The hubs have to come off so a full Alignment needs done £60 or so. If I were you I'd do both, really annoying to have to get the alignment done again if the other side fails!

Someone on here was saying they had some non VW ones fitted, lasted 3, yes 3 WEEKS! i had mine changed only 3k miles ago, non VW ones!

Thanks for the help guys, i think i will get another set in england but get a mate to post them over via his work for free as they really weigh a poo load!

One last thing, whats involved in wheel alignment? and can any garage do it or does the garage need some magic kit?

I think most good garages will do it, then get a geometry specialist to check it all. Apparently my N/S/F caster was out quite a bit - must be due to the rubbish northen roads! feels so much better now.

You have not seen rubbish roads until you have come to the west of Ireland, i have driven most of the UK and your worst roads are F1 tracks when put along side ours! 4 people got lost down pot holes last year!

Just to bring this one up again, I've got a rumble from the front of my car, which seems to go away if i turn right handed, I think it's the left hand wheel bearing, would these symptoms fit this problem? I jacked it up and spun the wheel and it wasn't too bad, there was a bit of noise, but the knackered CV joint didn't help there, also there wasn't much (if any play) The other wheel span slightly more quietly. I'm probably going to order the bearings and a new CV joint ready to attack this weekend, but I just wanted to check my diagnosis was right first.

Thanks

Tom

very difficult to diagnose a front wheel bearing from spinning it, unlike the rears, you don't really know until you've got it in bits and even then the tiniest amount of pitting can make a significant noise on the road.

If you have a constant groaning from the front, straight ahead on a smooth road surface it is likely to be a front bearing but it can then sometimes be difficult to tell which side. Rears tend to make groaning on bends due to the construction of the bearing and races.

David.

ok guys quick update! trook the car to the garage last friday, told be ready by evening, rang at 5, not ready, told tomorrow morning, rand not ready till evening, rang nope sorry monday now.

Get a call TUESDAY to tell me he has got round to it but his words now "the thing the bearings go into are worn, i can get a new one for 50euro +vat, or a VW one will cost 140euro+vat"

i told him to hold on, i wanted to get some advicve off the forum.

What is the part he could be talking about? not the hub? some sort of casing?

I suppose strapping a small child to my bonnet would help work out which one it is??

I'll get a mate to listen out the window tonight, possibly.

I only recently adjusted my rear bearings up as there was a fair bit of play in them, but they seem ok still.

We all know that VW quotes high for parts.

But our cars run and drive like VW´s because they use quality parts.

If they had cheap parts / poor quality they would not be as they are.

So... Almost all Corrados are aged 14, with stock bearings.

I wouldn´t mind to buy a new set of original bearings again, knowing that they will last some more 14 years!

I would deffinatly go for the FAG brand bearings, instead of buying the same ones more expensive at VW or even some poor quality ones at other shop.

Try your local FAG / INA supplier!
