munkay 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Hi, Just registered as I am likely to be buying a G60 tomorrow night to replace my mk2 8v GTi. Car is a silver J plate 103,000 on clock and looks completely spotless and obviously very well looked after. Original Supercharger (Said to be strong and looked after - 163bhp rolling road) AVO springs 16" alloys Full s/s exhaust and Induction kit. selling for around - £2500 Lots of history and reciepts but not FSH. They guy selling seems really decent bloke to and is obviously into VW's which is a good thing. So what u reckon about price? (I am budgeting for a rebuild and would probably have it done well within 10,000 miles) Also I noticed StormVR6 is from Aberdeen, just wondered if he had ever seen this car before? (I am in Aberdeen too). I think the owner had taken it to meets before. Hehe...I also noticed your post about helping to sell the 67k white g60 a few months back! I noticed this at my works website for sale around november time just after I had bought my GTi...I was so gutted I missed it
VR6 0 Posted February 5, 2003 All the way from the ClubGTI forum eh? ;) Welcome to the forum. Have a look in common corrado questions as there is a thread in there about buying advice. Might be worth searching all forums for 'G60' to see what sort of things people are saying. should give you a general idea of things that can go wrong and hopefully, things to look for when buying. munkay 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Hehe...yeah I have already read up every single article on the net I reckon Similar thigns to look for as with golf...and then the charger. If the car is in genuine good nick you reckon its at a good price? (hopefully stormvr6 will be able to shed some light on the car)
CazzaVR 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Munkay, welcome to the forum. Sounds good value, but as it hasn't got complete history I'd get it checked out by a VW specialist first before parting with your well earned dosh, failing that the AA or RAC. If you decide to buy, I'd get the charger done ASAP, as strictly speeking it should have been done 20-30K ago! Check the door handles, sunroof, spoiler, all electrics, shocks. Check for oil leaks in the engine etc and check for stained carpets/mats/seats that could indicate a water leak. If you're in any doubt, don't be scared to walk away. Hope this helps. Good luck! munkay 0 Posted February 5, 2003 I am kinda reluctant to get an expensive AA check as they are so similar o the golf I am fairly confident about checking it out. (famous last words :) ) Is there anything to look for externally on the charger? or is the only real test to look in the intake for oil
VR6 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Doesn't seem like a bad price though so if you do find a few defects like door handles (a very common problem  ) or a bit of damp (usually a dodgy membrane in the door as you probably know from the Golfs) etc then It could still be worth buying. Definately budget for the charger overhaul (not sure of a price as I don't have one! lol). As Andy says, don't be afraid to walk away - there are quite a lot of G60's out there (just happen to be a lot of people looking for them!) God i've used a lot of brackets......
munkay 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Yeah I am only to familiar with door membranes..just got mine sorted 2 weeks ago on the golf ;) I am thinking about 500 quid for a stage 4 overhaul as its about 475 for a normal rebuilt (at jabba). Then adding about 150 for costs of getting garage to remove it - send it - and re fit it. (altho I have resently noticed PD-motorsports (sic?) coudl possibly do the work for less...correct me if i am wrong :D ) So about 650-700 quid for the work? sound right? Is having this done gonna basically eliminate the main cost/reliabilty problem from the C? (for a good few thousand miles anyway :) ) How are the intercoolers for problems/cost?
CazzaVR 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Check the intercooler for oil. You should be able to reach the intercooler from behind the front passenger wheel, if your hand is covered in oil there's a problem. You may find a tiny amount of oil in the charger inlet- this is normal. If there is a lot it may mean the seals have gone in the charger. Having the charger rebuilt is a must and should give you at least another 50-60K, before needing to be done again (Stage 4 rebuild would need it sooner). However, you are still buying an old car, which is producing a lot of power so things may still go wrong. The charger on my old G60 was fantastic, it was everything else that gave me the problems! Don't let me put you off though 'cos they're brilliant cars and worth the odd problem. I'm sure there's a lot of people running G60's who get very few probs. G60Jet 1 Posted February 5, 2003 If you buy it get the charger done asap, get the car checked over before you get the charger done though, take it to someone like jabbasport after you buy it, get them to give it a check over, then if they say its sound get the charger done. If its not so good, sell it on or get the charge done anyway to basic spec and use it as a runaround till you find a better one. if the charger blows, you'll need to find another one, they are getting harder to find these days. The later G60s had a slightly different charger (internally, that according to jabba are better) so its worth looking after the charger even more!! The G60 is a sound engine and very strong, but like anything it needs looking after. Take the charger out let off and put your fingers inside the pipe and the charger silencer box. small amounts of oil are okay. more that a small coating could be trouble like andyg60 said. Before i got my charger done a few months back it blew the seals and oil found its way back into the airbox tube. so check that. Check for the normal stuff to. Rust etc. A clean one shouldn't be showing any sign at that age. mine only show a like around the chin spoiler screws!!! Check the expansion tank and oil filler for mayo or oil in the water etc.
munkay 0 Posted February 5, 2003 I am well up to speed with general stuff and engine things due to having a mk2 8v gti so hopefully I can be sorted for that side of things. Its basically the charger etc I am new to. Is it pretty wuick/easy to take of the outlet pipe? I do intend to get the charger done pretty quickly but probably not for maybe 2000-3000 miles. Is this gonna be pushing it even if it seems clean?? I hear of some lasting 150miles quite regularly...altho I in know way mean to do this myself ;) Thing is I am up north so I have to send it down to them and get a garage up here to remove / send / refit it for me. I would not be thrashing the tits off it at all ..but I know if I dont get it done asap I will be driving about WAITING for it to blow. Mind you if it blows in that time then I guess it musta been pretty knackered in the first place and not worth a rebuild. oh and one last thing...what exactly happened when the seals blew? :)
G60Jet 1 Posted February 5, 2003 oh and one last thing...what exactly happened when the seals blew? :) Starts using a little more oil, oil starts to find it was through the rubber hoses and forms tiny beads on the surface of the pipework especially around the intercooler. power will drop cos the engine injests oil vapourised in the charger and you lose power. and if your really unlucky the beerings seize. Its not just the oil seals and beerings you need to check though, if the small charger belt goes the shaft and the scroll hit, smashin the scrolls and blowing the side off the charger. but dont let it worry you. cos if it goes then they often are useless. look at the pd motorsport site, they have pic's link is on the from page of the forum. If it a later J or early J? foglights and bonnet give it away. the ones posted in this topic are later ones, ____-----------_____ out style bonnet, earlier ones are -----______------ in style bonnet and inset fogs!! Later G60s also had ABS, worth the money as long as it works well. Orange light on the dash should come on and go off before you start the engine, then start it, if it comes back on, or fails to come on at all there is a problem. Although it may come on for a slight sec as you crank the engine.
W3RKD 0 Posted February 5, 2003 the charger can go on tickover "belive me i have seen it happen!" not on one of ours a might add :x one of the big problems is that even if the charger looks mint from the outside, with no oil on the case etc ,the intermiedate belt (if std) is a week point if the teth are worn/wearing it only need to slip a tooth and the displacer will go out of sink and then bang this will happen!!! see pic... not trying to scare you but just beware!!! munkay 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Its an early J ...no ABS Are the belts available as a VAG part so garage should eb able to replace without dismantling charger etc..? How much do you charge for a basic rebuild a pd-motorsport, including VAT and carriage, and whats the likely turnaround?

biggrim 0 Posted May 17, 2003 Hi there munkay. Don't know if you are aware of BEDROCK VEEDUBS in Motherwell which is near Glasgow where I live. They are Scotlands JABBASPORT agent and you can get a hold of them on 01698254666 and ask them if they remove and send chargers to JABBA for work. I know Glasgow is not the closest place to you but it might be worth a shot.
