driving days

For my 30th birthday my parents are getting me a drivng day.

 

any recommendations on what to go for?

 

I looked at the gallardo ones, but its like 260 quid for 4 laps?!?!!

 

I would like to try a few cars too if possible.

 

Any ideas would be good

yup, another vote for Silverstone... excellent instructors, great condition cars (although the gearchange on the 911s was very soggy and needed re-bushing... :lol: ) and a fantastic circuit to boot!

There are two types, Precision or performance, Both are not cheap but the actual time in a car is worth th extra, and you do actually get to have a play with the cars, The instructors are all profesional drivers themselves and Everything is tailored towards it being an experience to remember rather than one that "could have been better."

it was a driver briefing followed by 3 laps in a Lotus Exige, 3 laps in a 911, 3 laps in a Ferarri 355 and then a passenger lap with a complete mentalist in a race tuned lotus exige... I swear we spent more time with less than 4 wheels on the track than we did with them all touching!!! :lol:

Dont bother with a Ferrari day unless you can get something really recent.. the 355 they use in most of these days is incredibly dissapointing. I drove a P reg one on mine and found the Impreza WRX STI warm up car far more exciting and fun to drive!

 

My mate just did a driving day last weekend and his was Elise/355/Porsche 996 - the Ferrari they gave him to drive was an old H reg 348 and he said it was dire!

 

I reckon Porsche/Aston/Lambo would all be worth going for!

the 355 at silverstone was quite a new one and was a blast to drive... The 911 was a bit older, but other than the gearshift being a little sloppy, was nice and tight to drive... The lotus was almost new and I hated it 'cos it was too small for me and my big feet... :(

I've heard that many of these driving days have strict limits on the revs that can be used. The day my wife went on a few weeks ago was superb, no rev limits and plenty of time in the cars, really relaxed and pleasant instructors too. Booked it through Drivers Dream Days but heres was the Ultimate Supercar Day, even that didn't give her as much time in the cars as she'd have liked.

I guess it depends on the instructor.. the Scottish chap who was guiding me in the Impreza was very easy going, very reassuring, and really encouraged you to ring it out.

 

The guy in the Ferrari.. well he just seemed very unhappy to be there and made a sarcastic comment about the bill i'd just incurred on the car when I took it past whatever his rev threshold was.. sorry for wanting to hear a Ferrari engine singing like its supposed to!

the guy in the ferrari 355 I was in was urging me to really go for it.... at the end of the day it turned out I was the only person there to have got it flat to the floor in 6th down the main straight! 8) No idea what speed I was doing, (the speedo's blanked out to stop people watching it more than the track!) but it was at 5000rpm+ just before we had to brake for the corner! 8)

my sister did a Ferrari one at Rockingham, and were all brand new there, that's why she chose Rockingham.

 

I did a Formula First at Brands Hatch a few years ago, along with some 3 series practice laps, that was great :)

Just did a Lambo Gallardo Day at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough last Saturday.

 

First out in an Imprezza for two laps after the instructor had taken you out. Then straight into the Lambo - No restrictions were put on what so ever.

 

Was suppossed to be 3 laps, I somehow managed 5 !! :lol: (Possibly something to do with - no way was I going into the Pits before being told !!)

 

I managed to get the tyres squealing on one corner and the back end slightly out of shape too coming out of another, the instructor was happy for you to push it - excellent fun and a Score Sheet of 98% - beating everyone there on the day

 

Cost normally £169 with Everyman Racing

(but free for me using my Tesco Vouchers - :D )

 

To be honest I would still have preferred to had much more time in the Gallardo, but I think the whole point is to give you an experience rather than too much time to get used to the car and then drive like a loon !! Shame !
