Heater not working properly?!

Recommended Posts

What could cause the heater not to work on speed 1 and 2 but works fine on 3 and 4?! Also the light doesnt glow up on the heater panel when you swith the side lights on... Any ideas what could cause this?? :? Oh and its the later type C with the twisty knobs...

I think the optics are pretty poop so maybe the light could be broken. Pull it out and have a look.

As for the fan not working, not sure, wouldnt be the thermal fuse gone? Try taking the knob off and cleanign the conenections.

Hope you get it sorted

as Son of a Beesting, it could be the bulb or poor connection , the fan will either be the thermal fuse ( a new resistor needed which cost pence from maplin) or the copper contacts behind the switch are dirty - pull the knob off and clean the contacts and make sure they do contact sometimes it needs a bit of manipulation

As usual, the search would help .....

Iv used the search and tried to clean the connectors, pull the knob off to chek the bulb and everything seems fine.. :? Think il try and change the resistor and see if that brings the heater to work properly.. Dont know what to do about the light part.

did you check the voltage at the bulb ?

did you pull the knob off the speed setting ?

what did you clean it with ?

Yes i checked the power at the plug behind the dash that connects to the heater controls, power there is ok but the light doesnt glow up..:? I pulled the knob off and cleaned around the area with a dry cloth then tested the speeds but still no joy...

Ive managed to get the light going on the control panel but cannot get the heater to work on speed 1 & 2, it still works fine on speed 3 & 4, ive cleaned the connectors/changed the resistor on the motor and even tried about three different heater control panels bit its still the same.. Any ideas anyone? :?

It will be the resistor that is knackered. There a 'how to' on here somewhere. Its an easy job, I have it to do as well, although I'm waiting until nicer weather... just in case I am with out a fan for a few days (just in case I break it) ;)

Iv changed that too... :? I think the later models are different to the early one's thoh. I think it may just be the motor, still not sure thoh...

I doubt its the motor, if it was it wouldn't work at any speed.

Rosswalker it's a 10min job to replace the thermal fuse and it can all be done indoors. You couldn't possible go wrong

mines(94 vr)doing the same thing......last weekend i popped out the heater fascia and control nobs to change the single centre nob 1.2v 286 capless bulb - and after putting it all back on, only 4th speed would work....

....sunday i took apart again and noticed that if i apply pressure differently when turning nob, and with the front fascia off, i could get it to work on 1,3 +4!? put it all back together and now have speeds 3 + 4  seems to be the connection somewhere - more fiddling next weekend i reckon.....

pull the fan speed knob off and clean it with a light grade emery (copper strip) and check the inside of the knob , clean with emery and make sure its contacting , its only sprung metal, pull it out a touch
