Mapable ignition for 16v on carbs?

Mate of mine has a MK1 Golf with a KR engine on twin 40's. Currently its staticly timed. He wants to somehow find a way to either use the vacuum advance or maybe a mapable iginition system. Can anyone suggest how he might do that? The Distributer he has doesn't have a vacuum advance on it.
