It's just there to assist in smooth changes - I would check what is loose tho and what caused it to come off, there should be play in the mech but not much... A mate of mine had a mk3 with loads of play and becuase he left it, something eventually broke and in total he had to replace 3 parts becuase of excessive wear and it cost nearly £300...
